“Sphere” Goofs List

  • Continuity: When Beth floods the med lab, Norman sees an oxygen tank with a mouthpiece. He swims towards it and the mouthpiece is leaning to the right. In the next shot, the mouthpiece is leaning to the left.
  • Continuity: When Beth is accessing the Spacecraft’s computer “Unknown Entry Event” is readable when reflected off her helmet; it should be mirrored.
  • Factual errors: During the descent to the underwater habitat, Harry identifies the classical music inside the mini-sub as: “Mozart. Horn Concerto in E-Flat, K447.”, which is not correct. It is Mozart’s Horn Concerto in D, K412.
  • Factual errors: The crew used re-breathers scuba equipment. A re-breather allows you to breathe your own air over and over again and produce no bubbles.
  • Factual errors: When Norman and Beth are in the spacecraft and watching the 3D projection of the spinning black hole, the pulsar jet is shown being sucked into the black hole, which is an error. A pulsar jet is an extremely high energy, high speed jet which emanates OUT of a black hole.
  • Continuity: When Beth opens the cupboards to show Norman that there is no food, she opens the left door and then the right, and when she closes them the left door stays closed but the right one swings open a little bit. The camera cuts to Norman, and when it cuts back to Beth the left door is open and the right one is closed.
  • Crew or equipment visible: After Harry saves Norman when he has a valve leak and is attacked by a sea snake, there is a sky shot of Harry telling Norman to breath normally. In the last few seconds of the scene you can clearly see in the lower left hand corner the leg of a crew member wearing shorts with black and white sneakers
  • Factual errors: In an atmosphere made of 98% helium and only 2% oxygen such a fire is impossible.
  • Continuity: In the film, the code used to decode ‘Jerry’s’ messages was flawed, some letters where incorrectly assigned so that “Harry” would read “Jerry”. However, the rest of Harry’s messages should have been jumbled too and Harry’s first message should have read “Jallo. Jow era you. My name is Jerry”, but it does not.
  • Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): When Fielding is looking at the Sphere he mentions the Artist Giotto, but grossly mispronounces his name, saying Ge-oh-to. The name is pronounced Jot-to.
  • Factual errors: In the scene after Harry is being evaluated after coming out of the sphere Beth has him on a SPO2/Pulse Oximetry Monitor. Later it shows Harry’s pulse is 69 and his oxygen saturation at 96%. In a 2% oxygen environment this would be impossible.
  • Continuity: When Harry and Norman are talking after the scene in the eating area, and Harry tells Norman they are going to die down there, Harry lies down in his bunk. The first shot shows Harry lying with his head on the pillow and the next shot shows Norman from Harry’s perspective and his right foot is hanging over the bed. As the conversation ensues, Harry sits up in his bed and is clearly seen leaning against the wall, which means his legs should have moved up too. The next shot of Norman shows that Harry’s right foot is still hanging over the edge.
  • Factual errors: In several scenes the team members wear various recreational dive computers, which are useless on a 1000ft saturation dive.
  • Crew or equipment visible: When Beth floods the medical lab, if you watch the bottom of the screen during the aerial shot you see very clearly the crew and some equipment standing there.
  • Factual errors: Oxygen is not a corrosive gas in the same family as flourine and chlorine. Oxygen is still toxic, especially at such high pressures, but not for the stated reason.
