“Sleepless in Seattle” Goofs List

  • Continuity: Scenes from a single viewing of An Affair to Remember (1957) are out of order.
  • Continuity: Annie’s hand that picks up the popcorn while watching the video.
  • Continuity: Annie’s arms when she visits her professor brother.
  • Continuity: On the Empire State Building, Annie’s scarf is longer after she picks up the backpack.
  • Factual errors: On Valentine’s Day, the top of the Empire State Building would be lit up in red.
  • Incorrectly regarded as goofs: West Coast broadcasts of the New Year’s ball drop at Times Square in New York are delayed 3 hours to midnight Pacific Time.
  • Continuity: Walter drinks a half glass of water at the Xmas party, but seconds later the glass is full again.
  • Boom mic visible: A boom mic shows in Walter’s car window as he walks toward Annie.
  • Continuity: On Valentine’s Day in New York, while Annie and Walter are having dinner, the sky is getting dark. Then, it is lighter when Sam is leaving the airport. It is darker again when Jonah is shown on top of the Empire State Building.
  • Continuity: The clasp on Annie’s necklace during Valentine’s Day dinner with Walter.
  • Audio/visual unsynchronized: Sound and vision for the fireworks are simultaneous and should not be.
  • Continuity: Jessica merely hits random keys on the keyboard when typing up Jonah’s order for a flight to New York, yet what she types comes up on screen perfectly, without any errors.
  • Continuity: When Annie goes into the closet with the phone the broom changes places.
  • Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): When Walter finds Annie in the broom closet she claims the caller on the radio show was from Duluth and asks him where that is. Walter replies “North Dakota.” Duluth is in Minnesota.
  • Continuity: The Kleenex close to the typewriter changes while Annie is sitting in the sofa. The Snapple bottle also changes.
  • Continuity: The sugar-cube tower Sam is building in the restaurant changes shape between shots.
  • Crew or equipment visible: The camera is reflected in the shop window when Walter and Annie see the globe, circled with red hearts, in the window display.
  • Errors in geography: When Annie and Walter are getting out of their cars at her parents’ home, they are supposed to be in Baltimore. However, a street sign visible behind Annie indicates they are actually in Seattle’s Queen Anne neighborhood.
  • Continuity: While Sam and Jonah are on phone with Dr. Marsha Fieldstone they sit on a bench. Sam’s hand jumps from between his legs to on his right leg between shots.
  • Continuity: When Annie and Walter are having dinner at the end of the movie, the champagne goes from bubbly to flat back to bubbly.
  • Revealing mistakes: Jonah is eight years old in the movie, yet he appears to still have all his baby teeth.
  • Continuity: Walter is supposed to be allergic to wheat, but he ordered a sandwich on white bread, which is made from wheat.
  • Errors in geography: A trip in a small boat from Lake Union to Puget Sound’s Alki Beach would take considerably longer than suggested in the film.
  • Revealing mistakes: While Annie and Walter are standing in front of the display window at Tiffany’s, the globe in the display window is not turning in the proper direction.
  • Revealing mistakes: At Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, Annie is walking up a jetway that is not connected to anything; there is no airplane at the gate.
  • Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): When Jonah is sitting with Jessica in the chair, he tells Sam: “When you play it backwards this says ‘Paul is Dead’.” The actual saying is ‘Turn me on dead man’ and it is on The Beatles’ White Album, which was released on Apple records. (The record on their record play has a ‘Capitol’ label on it).
