“Sleeping with the Enemy” Goofs List
- Crew or equipment visible: When Laura escapes in the yacht, two crewmembers can be seen in the area below deck.
- Factual errors: Ben mentions several times, while inviting Laura/Sara to dinner, that he’ll be making a pot roast, but the dish that is on fire when she gets there is not a pot roast.
- Factual errors: Right before Sara’s boat ride, she breaks the light in front of her house. When she escapes and swims back to the house, the light is unbroken and on.
- Continuity: When Laura emerges from the sea after her feigned drowning, both she and her hair are soaking wet. However, as she runs towards the beach house her hair is almost dry and flowing behind her. When she enters the beach house, her hair switches back to being wet and straggly.
- Continuity: When Martin has Symphony Fantastique playing in Laura’s home at the end, it inexplicably vanishes when Ben arrives.
- Factual errors: While on the ferris wheel, they lean forward as their carriage goes by the ride operator. Leaning forward is listed as one of the most dangerous things passengers can do because of the lack of seat belts. Any ride operator working on the ferris wheel at any park, fair, or carnival are supposed to tell the passengers to stop leaning forward.
- Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): When Laura first goes over to Ben’s house for dinner, Laura makes the comment that she likes Classical Music, and then elaborates, saying anything except Berlioz. Berlioz is a Romantic Composer.
- Revealing mistakes: Laura (Sarah) picks apples off the tree and that have fallen on the ground in Iowa, right before the 4th of July parade. But an apple tree would not be bearing fruit, let alone be falling on the ground by the 4th of July.
- Continuity: When Laura escapes from the Yacht she returns to the beach home and changes clothes, and also cuts a large amount of her hair so that she can put on the darker wig. A few days later she is in the small Iowa town walking through the rental home with surprisingly long hair again.
- Continuity: The cut/bruise on Laura’s head comes and goes. After she is hit by Martin leaving a nasty abrasion on the left side of her forehead, he leaves to go to town after telling her they will sail that night. She goes outside to break the lantern, and the wind blows her hair off her forehead – no bruise. Later that night, she has her hair back in a braid, before they get on the boat – no bruise. Then, when she meets Ben a couple days later, she flips her hair off to one side and he sees the bruise. The very next day (or soon after) she has her hair back again with Ben, no bruise.
- Errors in geography: When she arrives in Iowa on the bus, you see a South Carolina highway sign (S.C. 28) reflected in the window of the bus as Julia Roberts is looking out the window.
- Revealing mistakes: Laura was picking apples right after the 4th of July. Doesn’t it seem odd that apples are already ripe?
- Continuity: When Laura posed as a man to visit her mother in the nursing home she left town in a 1967 Ford Mustang. When she returned home she was driving a 1966 Ford Mustang.
- Revealing mistakes: When Laura throws a stone at the street light by the beach, the stone clearly misses the bulb, yet it breaks anyway.
- Continuity: When Laura first has dinner with Ben, he sees a very nasty bruise at her hairline on the left side. When we see her next (presumably the next day) her hair is parted on the left side and there is no bruise.
