“Scent of a Woman” Goofs List

    • Continuity: Slade’s tie during the suicide scene repeatedly switches between disheveled and neatly tied.
    • Crew or equipment visible: When Slade is driving the Ferrari, the crew is reflected in the paintwork.
    • Crew or equipment visible: The camera is reflected in Slade’s sunglasses while he is talking with the political science teacher at Baird.
    • Audio/visual unsynchronized: When Trask bangs his gavel at the end of Slade’s speech it can be heard hitting the podium one more time than it can be seen hitting it.
    • Crew or equipment visible: When Donna and Frank descend to tango on the dance floor a microphone boom can briefly be seen overhead.
    • Continuity: When Colonel Slade is threatening to shoot Charlie (and himself), the position of his tie changes between shots (from tilted to the right, to straight).
    • Continuity: The small amount of paint seen inside the balloon above Mr. Trask’s car before he pops it, is not consistent with the amount that actually falls on the car.
    • Continuity: During the tango scene, Donna’s earrings can be scene in one shot and in the next scene, they’re gone. Then, at the end, the earrings return.
    • Continuity: In the scene where Frank cross the street and falls in the grass, Charlie, helps him to stand up again. At first, Charlie doesn’t have the walking stick, but when Frank stand up, Charlie inexplicable has the walking stick in his hands.
    • Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): Frank mispronounces “espresso” as “expresso” – extremely unlikely for an Italiophile.
    • Revealing mistakes: During the “Tango Scene” the first time the piano is heard striking hard chords, one can see the piano in the background, but no one is at the piano.
    • Factual errors: Several times during the movie, Slade handles what is supposed to be his U.S. Army issue M1911A1 .45 caliber pistol. But the pistol has a bright blued finish, white highlighted sights, and wood grips with a medallion. These features identify it as a civilian copy of the M1911A1.
    • Continuity: Lt Col Slade sternly warns Charlie not to refer to his .45 pistol as a “gun”, but rather to call it a “weapon” or “piece” in accordance with military custom. But later in the movie, Slade himself refers to the pistol as a gun.
    • Factual errors: Twice during the hotel room scenes, Slade waves his pistol around with the hammer cocked while talking to Charlie. A real Army officer would never do this, since such action violates basic handgun safety practices.
    • Factual errors: While Slade is explaining to Charlie the proper way to perform the military salute, he says the right hand should be positioned “at the hairline.” Doing this would result in a ridiculous-looking salute. The proper position for the hand is adjacent to or just above the right eye. Additionally, in a proper salute the arm is raised and lowered in a fluid motion. The right arm is never “snapped” to or from the right eye as the salute is rendered. Finally, the outside of right hand is always canted towards the individual receiving the salute, in accordance with Army custom. Slade does not cant his hand properly when he salutes Charlie.
    • Factual errors: Four unit citation emblems are mounted in one row over the right pocket of Slade’s Army dress uniform. In actual practice, the emblems would be arranged with only three in the row, with the fourth being placed just above and centered on the first three.
    • Plot holes: While Slade is test driving the Ferrari with Charlie, he makes several successful high-speed turns in downtown New York City. In reality, such maneuvers would be impossible for a blind man to perform without crashing, even with someone like Charlie coaching him.
    • Plot holes: It would be highly unlikely that Headmaster Trask would need to rely on witness testimony to find out who was responsible for the paint-balloon gag. The room containing the microphone to the loud speaker would be someone’s responsibility. That would be a much faster way to get to the culprit(s). Additionally, a smart man like Headmaster Trask could have deduced that since Mr. Havermeyer made a seemingly backhanded remark about the Jaguar only one day prior to the incident, he would be likely to have something to do with it.
    • Continuity: In the scene where Slade directs Charlie to get his dress blues from his closet, there is no Silver Star ribbon on the jacket. In all the later scenes with the dress blues there is a Silver Star ribbon.
    • Continuity: During the driving scene, a left turn is made and a the rear of the car begins to drift. Application of counter steer (to the right) can be observed from the external shot, and then on the next camera angle from the inside of the vehicle, Al Pacino’s character is seen recovering the steering wheel from the left.
    • Factual errors: Colonel Slade believes that Jack Daniel’s proper name was John. It was, in fact, Jasper.
    • Continuity: In the scene where Slade is threatening to commit suicide, he has tears coming out of his left eye and not his right. When the camera breaks away and then returns, the tears are flowing down his right cheek and not his left.
    • Plot holes: Charlie doesn’t have visible pimples despite several references to them in the movie.
    • Continuity: When Simms and Slade meet in Slade’s apartment, the amount of whiskey in Slade’s glass and bottle repeatedly change.
    • Continuity: When Slade and Simms get ready to leave for NY, Slade’s tie changes from straight to crooked and back again.
    • Errors in geography: Newark airport is substituted for Logan (Boston).
