“My Best Friend’s Wedding” Goofs List
- Errors in geography: After Michael and Kim pick up Julianne from O’Hare Airport, they’re heading north on Chicago’s Lake Shore Drive. Kimmy swerves wildly to her exit. The next time you see the car, it’s heading south on Lake Shore Drive with the Drake Hotel in the distance.
- Continuity: Disappearing picture when Julianne is composing the email.
- Continuity: In one of the chase scenes there’s supposedly two people in the BMW, but when they show a closeup of the car there’s obviously only one person.
- Incorrectly regarded as goofs: Julianne has two pairs of sunglasses throughout the whole time she’s at Kimmy’s parents’ estate, often wearing one pair while the other is hanging on her top shirt button. When she and Michael reach the gazebo and she takes off the sunglasses she’s been wearing, one can see that she’s holding two pairs.
- Errors in geography: The boat ride magically teleports the characters to many different points along the Chicago River, from Lake Shore Drive to being alongside Union Station (trains in background) to Clark Street Bridge (Merchandise Mart in background).
- Factual errors: Julianne says that she had a minor in Psychology at Brown University; Brown does not have minors.
- Continuity: When Jules enters the private box at the ballpark, she is carrying a full tray of beers. She then hands a couple to some guys. A few seconds later the tray is full again.
- Continuity: When Kimmy and Julianne are having tea together, Kimmy’s necklace is tucked into/over her top.
- Incorrectly regarded as goofs: Chef Charlie Trotter plays himself in the movie. He is a Chicago chef and, at the time of the movie, had no restaurants other than his signature restaurant in Chicago. Jules reviews his New York restaurant; presumably, he was either hired away by a new fictional restaurant in New York or has opened a fictional branch of his Chicago restaurant there.
- Continuity: When Michael is sitting on the bench at the train station after looking for Kimmy, two men in uniform walk behind him. As Julianne finds him and is walking towards him, the same two men walk behind him again. And the newspaper in the guard’s hand changes from left to right.
- Continuity: At the start of the movie in the restaurant the wine glasses have very little in them. Throughout the scene they have the same (realistic) amount until George takes a sip from his, when it suddenly has a lot more.
- Continuity: When George comes over to see Julianne she lights a cigarette it disappears.
- Continuity: Jules’s cigarette length changes as she is smoking outside her hotel room on the floor.
- Continuity: When Jules is smoking outside the Hotel room and the door is pulled open ash falls in her hair, after a few shots of this scene the ash disappears, but she is still in the same position.
- Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): In the restaurant, Dionne Warwick is referred to as Whitney Houston’s aunt. Dionne Warwick is actually her cousin.
- Errors in geography: When Julianne is chasing Michael in the bread truck, she is talking on the phone and tells George that she is driving down Michigan Avenue. She is actually on Dearborn.
- Errors in geography: In Chicago, Lake Shore Drive is bordered by Lake Michigan on the east and the city on its west side. However, in more than one scene when driving on Lake Share Drive, the lake is either on the wrong side of the vehicle, or it keeps changing sides of the vehicle.
- Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): Kimmy is stated to be 20, yet orders an Amstel Light in the karaoke scene.
- Continuity: Jules is sitting on the floor and leaning her back against the door with a cigarette in her left hand. When Michael suddenly opens the door she falls backward and, in the next shot of her flat on the floor, the cigarette is in her right hand.
- Errors in geography: When George drives Julianne to the airport to fly from New York to Chicago, road signs are seen for U.S. 45, Mannheim Rd., which is in Chicago.
- Continuity: In the men’s suit shop, Michael’s left suit sleeve appears and disappears.
- Continuity: While driving away after Kimmy catches Jules and Michael kissing, Kimmy enters her convertible and the top is down. When they pan back as she drives away the top on her convertible is suddenly up.
- Revealing mistakes: When upset about an email Michael makes a phone call to his fiance Kimmy (played by Cameron Diaz), but asks for “Cameron” out loud.
- Factual errors: When George was telling his story of “how he met” Julianne and he mentioned Dionne Warwick and Scotty asked who Dionne Warwick is. Mandy said she’s Whitney Houston’s aunt when in fact she is her cousin.
- Continuity: Ash disappears and reappears in Julianne’s hair when she is lying down.
- Continuity: Julianne’s hair in the gazebo.
- Factual errors: Kimmy is supposedly an architecture major at the University of Chicago, but it has no architecture program.
