“Mission: Impossible” Goofs List
- Continuity: SPOILER: In the Baggage Car scene when Ethan removes the disguise, his shirt collar is huge to accommodate Phelps larger head. Moments later it is back to a regular size.
- Errors in geography: The Channel Tunnel has separate single-track tunnels for the two directions of travel.
- Continuity: Ethan reaches out and catches a drop of sweat falling from his head while two inches from the floor in the CIA Terminal Room. There is not enough distance between him and the floor for his hand to stop the sweat the way it is shown.
- Continuity: Krieger throws a disk in the trash really hard and you can see a piece break off. When Ethan recovers it, it is good as new.
- Continuity: Ethan has blood on his hands after finding Sarah and Golitsyn dead, then wipes them off in the phone box while talking to Kettridge. When he throws the chewing gum bomb at the fish tank his hands are clean but when he arrives at the hotel he proceeds to wash blood off them.
- Plot holes: When Hunt falls in the computer room, the air pressure generated ahead of his body by the fall would set off the floor alarm if it were anywhere as sensitive as shown.
- Errors in geography: When Ethan makes the phone call from Liverpool Street Station the phone number being traced is a Knightsbridge number and not a Liverpool Street number.
- Factual errors: Trains run on the left track, both in Great Britain and in France.
- Continuity: At CIA headquarters, the fire alarms in three sections are tripped. Then Luther hacks into the alarm system to trip the alarm in Section 21. Later in the Situation Room, the alarm is displayed in a corner of the wall display, but Section 21 isn’t lit up.
- Audio/visual unsynchronized: The sound effects used for the helicopter is not of the NOTAR which is the one shown.
- Revealing mistakes: In the opening scene, when Ethan gives Claire the injection, you can see that the needle is rounded and not sharp.
- Continuity: Claire places the tracker on the NOC list’s technician near the top of his left shoulder. When we see him in the bathroom in the overhead shot, the grey square has dropped to his lower back on the left side, closer to the center. It is visible when he reaches to clean the sink.
- Revealing mistakes: In Prague, Ethan walks by the car twice when Claire sees him.
- Incorrectly regarded as goofs: After obtaining the NOC list, Ethan Hunt sends a meeting request to Max at the address Job 315. The original Usenet group and email was Job 314. This is not a goof but merely an increment in the passage number to indicate a new job. Indeed, Hunt then quotes from Job 315 at the end of his message to Max.
- Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): When Ethan is quoting the Bible to Max, he says “palaces” instead of places as shown in the Bible he is reading.
- Factual errors: Noise from air conditioners which are supposedly covering Hunt’s presence is usually 25-31 dB, which is about three times softer than a whisper.
- Miscellaneous: In the computer room scene, when the man enters the room with Ethan suspended above him, you can clearly see the room reflected off the floor, as well as the man who enters the room. However we cannot see Ethan, and as the man was looking at the floor when he entered the room he would have noticed him.
- Continuity: When Donloe the computer technician enters the vault after his unfortunate coffee break, we see him opening the door and stepping in onto a white floor – however, the next shot from above shows a shiny black floor, as it should look when countermeasures are off (it’s the same shot where Ethan’s reflection is missing).
- Factual errors: When Franz is lowering Ethan into the room where the NOC list is kept there is a system of pulleys the rope is fed through before it goes into the room. All of the pulleys are fixed though, fixed pulleys only serve to change the direction of the rope and do not provide any mechanical advantage. Franz would be holding the same weight if the rope went over only one wheel down into the room.
- Plot holes: Although the computer room is equipped with three high-tech security systems to prevent any intrusion, the most basic security measure – video surveillance – is missing.
- Continuity: On the train when Max gets the disc from under her seat it is a floppy but when Kittrick asks her for the disc she gives him a CD.
- Revealing mistakes: At the end of the movie when Ethan and Luther are sitting having a drink outside the Anchor Pub in Bankside, they are sat at tables located in a place that would not be allowed by the local council because they would be obstructing the right of way. The only outside tables allowed at that pub are those located on the riverside podium – which can also be seen in shot.
- Errors in geography: The morning after the disastrous mole hunt, sun rise is shown over Prague castle in the distance, but in actuality the sun “sets” over Prague castle.
- Revealing mistakes: In the first shot of the TGV, when closing up, the brake indicator of the train shows red, which means the brakes are fully applied. In normal operations, the indicator shows green, which indicates the brakes are fully released.
- Factual errors: When the ticket for the high speed train is produced, not only does it claim wrongly to be for the TGV, which is actually called Eurostar (TGVs only travel within France and into Switzerland), but it also purports to depart from the “London Terminus”. There is no such station – at that time, Eurostar left from London Waterloo.
- Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): When the CIA are tracing Ethan Hunt’s phone call from London, the CIA agent reports “He’s in England” when the only confirmed digits are 44, from which you can only deduce a UK telephone number. You need another 3 or 4 digits to determine an area and hence part of the UK. (However, it’s not unusual for people to misunderstand the distinction between England and the complete UK.)
- Continuity: In the cargo car when Ethan pulls off the mask, his collar is too big for him. The next time we see him it is just the right size.
- Factual errors: The London-Paris passenger train via the Channel Tunnel is the Eurostar, not the TGV.
- Factual errors: When in the tunnel, the Eurostar uses an overhead power cable system; the TGV uses one at all times. No such power cable, which would have made the helicopter interactions impossible, is ever shown.
