“Miss Congeniality” Goofs List
- Continuity: When Miss Rhode Island is doing her flaming baton routine, the batons are clearly scorched black, but when her routine is over they appear unscorched, without having been extinguished.
- Continuity: When about to go out onto the stage for the top ten finalists, one of the girls puts curlers into Gracies hair, when she comes out onto stage her hair is perfectly straight.
- Revealing mistakes: The surveillance monitors in the van outside the Russian restaurant have time code windows starting with the letters “TCR”, which indicates playback of a tape, not recording. Recording time code would have the letters “TCG”.
- Continuity: SPOILER: When Gracie says that she really wants world peace when accepting the “Miss Congeniality” award, the reverse shot shows her wiping her eyes with a tissue. In the next shot, though, the tissue is nowhere to be seen.
- Audio/visual unsynchronized: SPOILER: When Stan announces that Gracie is the first runner-up he goes on to say, “Our new Miss United States is Rhode Island, Cheryl Frasier” what is heard is completely different than what he is seen saying.
- Crew or equipment visible: SPOILER: When Gracie tosses Cheryl’s crown towards the Statue of Liberty, you can see a hand reach out and grab it.
- Audio/visual unsynchronized: SPOILER: At the end when Gracie is taking the crown from Cheryl, Cheryl is hitting Gracie with her flowers and in the audio she is saying “Get away, Get Away, Get Away” but her mouth is saying something completely different.
- Continuity: SPOILER: In the scene where Gracie gets the Miss Congeniality award, after her speech, Miss Texas gets up on the stage to congratulate Gracie, but is then shown in the crowd when the camera goes back to Victor and Eric. You can see it is her, as her nose has been broken, which Gracie did earlier in the film.
- Continuity: SPOILER: When Cheryl is receiving her sash for Miss United States, the stage hand starts to put it over her head, and in the next shot from a different angle, does it again.
- Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): SPOILER: At the morning breakfast with all the pageant girls, Kathy Morningside says she has been director of the pageant for 21 years, and then later in the movie while she’s being arrested, she says 25.
- Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): SPOILER: During Grace’s Miss Congeniality acceptance speech Cheryl can be seen in the background flinching/jumping at something before trying to cover it up.
- Continuity: When Victor says he is leaving, and Gracie is in his room, and he gets toilet paper from the bathroom, the toilet paper changes from his hand from underneath his arm.
- Continuity: In the club, when Gracie is trying to get Cheryl to confess if she’s done anything illegal, the paint spots on Cheryl’s right cheek disappear and reappear.
- Continuity: At the start of the Russian surveillance operation there is a close-up of the book Gracie is reading revealing a glass spy hole in the middle of the book’s spine for the hidden camera. In all subsequent shots the spy hole is clearly no longer there.
- Continuity: The Steadicam operator, who’s standing on the front part of the stage during the finale, disappears and reappears between shots.
- Continuity: Cheryl hits Gracie with the roses and all the petals fly off. Later Cheryl is seen with the rose petals still attached.
- Revealing mistakes: Gracie’s, Victor’s and the FBI’s room numbers at the hotel are the same (103).
- Continuity: Gracie’s pizza slice changes size randomly between shots.
- Revealing mistakes: As Ms. Morningside is trying to open a bottle of aspirin, her “assistant” Frank Tobin comes toward her, and she almost calls him by the actor’s name (Steve Monroe). We hear her say, “Ste- Frank…”
- Continuity: When Gracie is answering her question on the one most important thing our society needs, Stan is to her right. But when she leaves the stage he is to her left.
- Continuity: When Gracie and Eric first meet Victor in the restaurant Victor’s hand jumps on and off of Eric’s shoulder.
- Continuity: Miss Ohio is played by two very different-looking actresses.
- Continuity: When Gracie enters the dressing room in her swimsuit she has a towel wrapped around her, covering the pin, but the men are able to see the dressing room on their monitor.
- Audio/visual unsynchronized: When Gracie is giving her final interview, the audio says, “I will take them out.” But, the visual very clearly shows her saying, “I will take them down.”
- Continuity: When Gracie trips and falls onstage, her hair is caught in her liberty crown. The next shot has her hair neatly groomed.
- Continuity: When Gracie jumps out at the guy who has the gun at the talent portion of the contest, she doesn’t hit the table of water glasses, but in the news coverage it shows her bumping the table as she runs to jump on the cowboy who was just lighting a cigarette.
- Continuity: The position of the microwave door when Gracie is heating up her TV dinner at the beginning of the movie.
- Continuity: When Victor and Eric are discussing that Gracie does not have a talent, Eric is drinking out of a cup. The cup is gone in the next shot.
- Continuity: When Gracie is practicing walking down the stairs in her dress in the middle of the night, she pulls out all of the weapons from under her dress. As she is doing this, her shawl is alternately on/off her shoulders several times.
- Continuity: When Grace and Eric meet with the pageant representatives, Ms. Morningside stands to defend the program against being labeled a beauty contest. The reflection in the contestant photos behind her shows Grace and Eric standing but then in the next shot they rise from their chairs.
- Revealing mistakes: All the FBI profiles have “Grace Hart” signed on their FBI badges.
- Continuity: When Grace is coming out of the hangar after her make-over Eric is seen leaning on the car and when the shot is seen from his back you can see he stands up away from the car. In the next scene he is again resting on the car and he again stands away from it.
- Continuity: After Gracie and Cheryl have hot cocoa, Gracie has her cup at the door but when she walks back, the cup is on the bedside table.
- Continuity: When walking on stage for the swimsuit scene, Gracie is seen stepping off a couple of seconds too soon. The shot is then cut and Gracie is seen stepping off from her position again.
- Continuity: While Gracie is waiting to be announced as a “top 5″ finalist the camera flashes to her three times. Miss Rhode Island who has already been announced appears and disappears in the line up.
- Continuity: The amount of water in Eric’s glass when meeting with Kathy and Stan for the first time.
- Continuity: When at the orientation breakfast, Gracie only spreads some of the pasty thing on her Bagel, yet when talking to Hawaii, it is neatly spread all over the bagel.
- Continuity: After Gracie kicks her quilt when she is angry in her flat, the quilt changes positions in different shots.
- Continuity: When Eric and Gracie are fighting in the gym, near the end Eric throws Gracie on the floor she is clearly going to hit the floor on her left shoulder, yet in the next shot she hits the floor on her back.
- Continuity: The clocks in the background of the police station which show times around the world jump 15 minutes when Eric says “So who’s buying me lunch?”
- Errors in geography: When Grace and Victor are leaving the restaurant in New York, a bus drives by with a huge UT longhorn banner on the back of it.
- Continuity: When MS R.I. comes to Gracy’s door with the hot chocolate, as Gracy first opens the door, the cap of the thermos is obviously not screwed down completely. As the two talk at the door, the cap switches to being tightly closed and stays that way.
- Incorrectly regarded as goofs: When Gracie visits Eric at the pool, the depth indicators seem to be incorrect. While at first glance they look like “3 FT = 9 M”, there is actually a decimal point, “3 FT = .9 M”, which is correct (3 feet equals exactly .9144 meters, but close enough).
- Revealing mistakes: In the final auditorium scenes, the rear of the crowd is obviously cardboard cutouts.
