“Man on the Moon” Goofs List

    • Anachronisms: ‘Andy Kaufman’ is playing a _Ms. Pac-Man (1981) (VG)_ arcade machine when George Shapiro tells him that the producers of “Taxi” (1978) agreed to his conditions in exchange for him to be on the show. Taxi began in 1978 but Ms. Pac-Man wasn’t released in the arcades until 1981.
    • Anachronisms: When Andy takes out Lynne to the movies, he goes to the snack bar to get some popcorn. The Coca-Cola cups are of the 1990s, not like those of the time setting. In the late 1970s, Coca-Cola was simply called “Coca-Cola” or “Coke”. The word ‘classic’ was not introduced until 1985, after the failure of New Coke.
    • Anachronisms: In the scene at the college theatre, several theatrical lighting fixtures can be seen from the back stage view. These are known as Electronic Theatre Control’s “Source 4″ fixtures and were not produced until 1995.
    • Continuity: When Andy is getting his Elvis impersonation together he puts on a guitar, but in the next cut when he’s facing the audience the guitar is gone.
    • Anachronisms: Lorne Michaels plays the executive producer of “Saturday Night Live” (1975) in 1982, when the infamous vote to ban Andy Kaufman took place. In reality, Dick Ebersol was executive producer of the show; Michaels left the show in 1980 and did not return until 1985.
    • Incorrectly regarded as goofs: Numerous anachronisms can be chalked up to artistic decisions; the film intentionally plays fast and loose with the timeline. For example, the Carnegie Hall performance was years before Andy’s cancer diagnosis; the title song wasn’t written until after Andy’s death; Andy didn’t meet his girlfriend at a wrestling match; Stacy Carter hadn’t met Jerry Lawler before Andy died (and certainly hadn’t married him). Andy performs his imitation of President Jimmy Carter before he had even announced that he was running for President.
    • Continuity: After Andy gives his Elvis impersonation, the same guy (long hair in a pony-tail) can be seen rising from his seat several different times to give a standing ovation.
    • Anachronisms: The model of Sony broadcast monitor used in the “vertical hold” scene dates from the 1990s, not the 1970s.
    • Anachronisms: The scene in which Andy and Jerry Lawler appear on “Late Night with David Letterman” (1982) was filmed on the similar, but not identical set of “Late Show with David Letterman” (1993). Also, Letterman is shown wearing glasses, which he did not do on “Late Night.”
    • Factual errors: When Andy Kaufman is on “Saturday Night Live” (1975)’s first episode, the announcer announces it as “Saturday Night Live”. However, the show was originally known as “NBC’s Saturday Night.”
    • Factual errors: At the end, the MPAA certificate number is listed as 369,916, which has one digit too many. At the time it should have been near 37,000.
    • Anachronisms: In the “Mighty Mouse” scene, supposed to take place in 1975, the “Proud N” NBC logo, depicting a peacock inside the letter N, is seen on the studio camera. The Proud N logo wasn’t introduced until 1979 (the logo used in 1975 was simply an N divided into red and blue trapezoids).
    • Anachronisms: Well before his appearance on the debut broadcast of Saturday Night Live, Andy is seen doing his classic impression of “Mr. Carter, the president.” As every SNL fan knows, the show spent their entire first season parodying then president, Gerald Ford. Jimmy Carter didn’t actually become president until halfway through the program’s second season.
    • Revealing mistakes: When Andy is totally bald as a result of chemotherapy, his head has “5 o’clock shadow” visible through the makeup. If all of his hair had really fallen out, his scalp would look completely bare.
    • Continuity: Costume inconsistency. When Tony Clifton walks onto the set of Taxi with the 2 prostitutes the blond is wearing a light purple top but later when sitting on top of the prop cab she is wearing an orange top.
