“Knocked Up” Goofs List
- Continuity: SPOILER: When Debbie is going through the house of her husband’s suspected “lover”, her hair is very curly. She catches him at the fantasy baseball draft, and they go outside. When they’re outside, her hair is almost straight.
- Incorrectly regarded as goofs: Ben tells Alison that he was struck by a postal vehicle and got compensation from the British Columbia government. Postal services in Canada are federal, not provincial, and any compensation would be through a crown insurance agency, not the government. However, in British Columbia, vehicle insurance is run through a British Columbian government Crown Corporation called ICBC, which insures all motor vehicles, including postal vehicles.
- Crew or equipment visible: In the scene in Alison’s boss’s office, where Alison’s pregnancy is being discussed, a crew member can be seen reflected in the window behind Jill. The crew member can be seen moving about.
- Continuity: Alison’s earrings change during the scene when she’s being weighed in the doctor’s office. At first they are stones, then they change to gold hoops.
- Continuity: When Alison is interviewing on the red carpet when she is pregnant, the camera guy over her shoulder is present for a profile shot, then disappears on a head on shot.
- Revealing mistakes: When Alison is arguing with Ben in her car, there is no rear-view mirror installed on the car (presumably to give the camera a better shot of them).
- Continuity: In the scene where Ben and Alison are drinking and dancing the night they meet at the club, her hair alternates between neatly up and down. When they decide to leave the club, her hair is neatly tied back, but when they exit the club, it’s down.
- Factual errors: The ultrasound images do not correspond to stated gestational ages. They’re off by many weeks.
- Revealing mistakes: In addition to the missing rear-view mirrors in Alison’s red VW, there are no front head restraints installed in the car. That’s against the law in the US.
- Continuity: In the scene when Alison is talking with her boss and Jill about her pregnancy, a mirror behind her boss shows a TV behind Jill. In the close-up shots of Jill the TV is not there.
- Revealing mistakes: In the birth scene, the umbilical cord of the infant is not attached to the infant’s stomach, and the infant’s completely healed belly button is seen next to the cord.
- Continuity: At the restaurant, Ben’s shrimp cocktail alternately contains three, then seven shrimps on the side of the bowl.
- Continuity: When Ben and Pete are in the hotel room talking about the chairs, the pillow is messed up in one scene, then re-fluffed in the next.
- Continuity: When Alison tells Debbie that she will be appearing in front of the camera, Debbie tells Pete to pay attention. At first, Pete’s headphones are on backwards (cables on the front of the ear-cups); as soon as the angle changes to behind Pete, they are on the correct way and remain so.
- Continuity: When driving home with baby, the same scenery including a McDonald’s restaurant pass by them more than once.
- Continuity: When Ben explains his dilemma to his father, at one point when viewed side-on, his father’s left arm is extended. In the next instant when viewed from the front, his father’s arms are folded.
- Continuity: When Jonah is watching Wild Things (1998) the first time Alison comes over, the VCR clock goes back in time between shots.
- Crew or equipment visible: When Alison is in her boss’s office discussing her pregnancy, a small microphone is briefly visible in her cleavage.
- Crew or equipment visible: When Ben is walking up to the door for Debbie and Pete’s oldest daughter’s birthday party, he stops to knock. However, the door is shiny enough that you can see the reflection of Ben and a crew member walking up beside him with the camera.
- Continuity: When Alison is sitting on the couch next to Ben as his friends leave to go play paint-ball, she has a noticeable pregnant belly. In the next scene, she is sitting on the side of the pool in a bikini with her sister and nieces, and has a flat stomach. In the next scene, the belly is back.
- Continuity: When Alison is driving her nieces to school, Sadie begins to tell her about how she Googled ‘murder.’ As she is telling the story the seatbelt jumps from being on the side of her shoulder to on top of it (next to her neck) between shots.
- Continuity: When Ben is watching Cheaper by the Dozen (2003) on the TV, the film skips from a scene near the beginning (where Tom is getting all the kids up for school) to a scene near the middle (where Tom is putting a band aid on one of the girls and fishes an athletics cup out of the pasta).
- Continuity: When Ben proposes to Alison, she is wearing a striped green shirt and it is night time. The next scene she is in bed eating ice cream with her sister. Then the scene after that she is in the car with her sister, it is morning and she is wearing the same shirt.
- Continuity: In the dinner scene when Pete does his Robert De Niro impersonation, his wine glass is shown in his hand, then on the table, and back again.
- Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): Toward the end when Ben finds Allison in the bath, in her speech about stress she says about the baby, “he’ll be wired for stress his whole life”. At this point Ben had already told her it was a girl.
- Continuity: When Ben is proposing to Alison, Alison’s hair alternates between being over her right ear and being tucked behind her right ear in different shots.
- Revealing mistakes: Alison has prominent tan lines on her shoulders when she first starts talking to Ben at the birthday party near the end of the film. These are covered up with makeup a few minutes later.
- Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): Debbie pulls up a map of sex offenders, and talks about how they are surrounded. The film takes place in California, but the map shows Boston (Interstate 95 and 93 intersect with routes 128, 1, and 3).
- Anachronisms: When Ben and Pete are in the Las Vegas hotel room, the Sands Hotel is seen out the window. The Sands was imploded in 1996 to make way for the Venetian.
- Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): In the club after Ben and Jason go to talk to Allison and Debbie, Jonah tells Martin that he has to leave. A few scenes later you see him still in the club.
- Continuity: When Alison is in the delivery room and Ben’s friends are waiting outside, Jay’s hairstyle changes briefly between shots.
- Continuity: In a scene where Ben is talking on the phone, a fake breast on the glass table appears and disappears between shots.
- Continuity: When Deb and Pete are in the waiting room while Alison is delivering, Deb’s bra strap is showing during a close-up of her talking to Pete. It’s not visible in wider shots before or after.
