    “Kingpin” Goofs List

    • Continuity: When Munsen’s hand is cut off in the generator his “1979 state championship ring” doesn’t get shredded with it, as his character still uses it on his rubber hand.
    • Anachronisms: US Postal Service logo visible on mail box was not used in 1979.
    • Continuity: In the opening scene, a 7-pin suddenly appears.
    • Continuity: Roy puts his rear view mirror up, in the next scene it is down again.
    • Continuity: Ishmael’s chest tattoo is visible before he gets it.
    • Continuity: Munsen’s nose is bloody before Claudia hits him.
    • Continuity: The oil on Roy’s mouth at the gas station.
    • Continuity: Roy’s hand holding the hook is visible after he flosses.
    • Revealing mistakes: When Roy’s rubber hand has been removed and the hook is visible, his right arm/sleeve is suddenly longer than his left (in fact, it’s just longer enough to accommodate the hook that Harrelson is holding in his hand at the time). This is most obvious at the beginning of the tournament scene, when Roy’s hand falls off with the ball. His right arm is suddenly a several inches longer than his left, not counting the hook, but when he puts the hand back on his arms are the same length again.
    • Revealing mistakes: When Claudia and Roy are fighting in the parking lot, you can clearly tell when Claudia’s stunt double is being used. She looks much larger from the back and some of the edits are not very well done.
    • Continuity: When the band starts playing the national anthem, Roy is visible in the big-screen TV behind the stage, although he – in that moment – is supposed to be in the toilet vomiting.
    • Revealing mistakes: When the machine returns Roy’s bowling ball with his detached rubber hand still holding onto it, you can clearly see that there is a fourth hole.
    • Continuity: When McCracken pulls off Roy’s fake hand no hook is visible. Roy sits in the chair and wipes his head with a towel then puts towel in his lap and clearly puts the hook in his right hand using the towel as a cover. When the towel is removed the hook is now visible.
    • Revealing mistakes: When Roy first meets Ishmael in the bowling alley, he tells him to walk two floor boards to the left. When Ishmael rolls the ball, a stick is visible hitting the pins to ensure that Ishmael gets a strike.
    • Revealing mistakes: When Roy and Claudia are fighting in the parking lot, Roy goes to bite Claudia’s ankle and his rubber hand actually “comes to life” and grips her leg.
    • Anachronisms: In the scene from 1969, where young Roy leaps over a fence, a 1973 full-size Buick on cement blocks can be seen in the background in the garage next door.
    • Continuity: When Skidmark is about to beat up Ishmael, Roy punches Ishmael with his right (rubber) hand.
    • Continuity: When the strip club owner is about to beat Ishmael with a bat, the cigar in his mouth disappears. And in the same scene Ishmael’s hat falls to the ground when he’s pushed up against the wall but a few seconds it re-appears on his shoulder.
    • Continuity: Right before Roy meets Ishmael in the bowling alley for the first time, he rips his rearview mirror off his car with his hook. After he leaves the bowling alley to catch up with Ishmael, the mirror is re-attached.
    • Continuity: After Big Earn’s first of three final strikes during the Reno Finals, Ishmael is visible sitting next to Roy, despite having just left with his brother.
    • Continuity: As Ishmael throws his first strike for Roy, Roy puts his left hand in his coat pocket. In the next shot, Roy’s hand is out of his pocket.
    • Continuity: When Roy is young and wins the State Championship, he gets a new gold Oldsmobile. The taillights are 3-segimented horizontally as in 1972. Later, when Roy and his car are older, the taillights are non-segmented vertical lights as in 1971.
    • Factual errors: Despite the popular urban legend, putting sugar into a gas tank will not ruin a car’s engine (although it is very inconvenient). Sugar does not dissolve in gasoline, so although the crystals could potentially clog the fuel filters or injectors (requiring both them and the tank to be cleaned) it doesn’t cause the massive damage that the legend suggests.
    • Continuity: The red Porsche 911 in Stanley’s driveway has 17″ Porsche Cup wheels, but the red 911 shown in Reno has the standard 16″ wheels.
    • Continuity: When Roy asks Ishneal if he smokes he has got a finished cigarette and a new cigarette in his mouth. Then suddenly he has no cigarettes in his mouth.
    • Continuity: When Roy is eating lunch with the Amish after starting to raise the barn wall, he has no corn on his plate next shot he has it in his hand and is eating it.
    • Revealing mistakes: During the Reno tournament, there are several instances where you can see the scoreboard above the lanes. Each time, the scoreboard has multiple names under each of the lane headings despite the fact that only one bowler is on each lane.
    • Revealing mistakes: During the final match with Big Ern, Roy bowls both the 1st and final frame on the right lane. During tournament play, bowlers will alternate lanes each frame meaning he should finish the game on the opposite lane. (Also, they do show Roy bowling on the left lane during the match, meaning they must be following the alternating lane format).
    • Continuity: In the beginning of the Reno Open, Ishmael holds a sign saying “Go Roy”, when Roy takes his first bowl in the tournament the sign says “Will work for food”
    • Anachronisms: In 1979, Roy uses a Brunswick Rhino bowling ball that wasn’t introduced until 1987.
    • Anachronisms: On a scene set in 1979, we see a guy drinking a Coca-Cola bottle, however it says “classic” under Coca-Cola. The word “classic” under Coca-Cola wasn’t introduced until 1985.
    • Factual errors: In Reno tournament Big Ern crosses foul line and throws a strike. In tournament play that would count as a zero and the pins would be reset.
