“The Invention of Lying” Goofs List

  • Continuity: In the funeral parlor, Anna takes Mark’s hand, and the position of her other hand changes between shots. Before, her free hand is beside her leg. After, her free hand is on top of her leg.
  • Factual errors: Consistently the terms “13th century” and “1300s” are used interchangeably. The 13th century is, of course, actually the 1200s (plus the year 1300). The “Black Plague” occurred in 1347/1348 in the 14th century.
  • Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): After Mark declines Frank’s invitation to hang out, Frank says “It’s all right, it’s cool.” Frank is obviously disappointed, so by saying “It’s all right,” he is actually lying.
  • Continuity: In the bar scene, there is a full glass of beer in front of Mark. When the camera cuts to the bartender then back to Mark, his beer glass is near empty, now accompanied by several empty shot glasses.
  • Continuity: During Anna’s first date with Mark, as she’s talking with her mother on her cell phone, her phone jumps from her left to right hand and then back again.
  • Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): Although lying and deception doesn’t exist in Mark Bellison’s (Ricky Gervais) world, the policeman who stops Bellison is willing to take a bribe when offered to overlook a DUI offense. As bribery is a form of deception it should also be impossible for anyone, apart from Bellison, to understand or participate in.
  • Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): Even though Anna can’t lie, on her date with mark, she fakes a smile a couple of times.
  • Continuity: Near the end of the movie, when Mark and his friend enter the church, there is a sign saying “a quiet place to think about the man in the SKY.” When they leave, the sign says “a quiet place to think about the man in the SET.”
  • Plot holes: In the perfect world with no lies, after Mark has told them about the afterlife. We see the ad on the bus writing “PEPSI – now offered in the afterlife” which is obviously a marketing lie.
