“Final Destination” Goofs List
- Incorrectly regarded as goofs: Alex sees a reflection of a bus traveling in an impossible direction, but this is only a vision, not an actual reflection.
- Factual errors: Alex dreamt that there was a decompression and part of the plane’s fuselage broke off. This would neither be related to the scavenger fuel pump explosion nor would it cause such an explosion.
- Incorrectly regarded as goofs: A flight leaving JFK International Airport for Paris could travel back over New York City, depending on wind conditions at takeoff.
- Continuity: SPOILER: Valerie Lewton’s death scene could not have taken the time for Alex to be driven to the police station, have an interview, and walk back to her house.
- Revealing mistakes: SPOILER: When the toilet is leaking in the bathroom when Tod gets strangled, the water is leaking from the water line valve not the tank. However, the water running down the tile is blue as if it came from a tank that had toilet cleanser in it. In the directors commentary, they explain that the water they used was deliberately blue so that the audience could see it better. if the water had been ordinary clear water it would be nearly invisible to the audience. However during this scene, if you look carefully you can see the floor has been built sloping down slightly obviously for getting the water to run across the floor.
- Continuity: SPOILER: After Billy is decapitated, Carter wets himself. The urine stain on his trousers changes when Clear and Alex walk away.
- Continuity: SPOILER: When Clear is in the car at the end, she knocks over a can of turpentine. When the camera turns back to the can, you can see that the can has changed the way it fell.
- Continuity: SPOILER: Before Terri is hit by the bus, puddles and wet patches can be seen on the road and path. But when the bus hits Terri they are suddenly gone.
- Revealing mistakes: You can clearly see the eyes moving on the “dead” body lying on the table in the morgue.
- Factual errors: The plane exploding is too far away from the terminal windows to shatter them. Also, the time it takes for the windows to shatter after the explosion is inconsistent with the speed of sound given the distance.
- Factual errors: When Clear is in the car, she moves the lever all the way to the bottom which for an automatic would be 1st gear, yet when she hits the gas the car goes backward.
- Continuity: At the memorial service, a lady in a purple outfit holding the flowers walks down the aisle twice behind Alex.
- Continuity: Alex’s boarding pass (shown in the opening credits) has him assigned to seat 25-J. In fact, he sits in seat 25-I (though most airlines don’t use “I”).
- Continuity: Clear’s hair in the garage when she takes off her welding helmet is curled, then straight, then curled again.
- Continuity: Teacher closes lid on whistling kettle after pouring water; in next scene, it is open again.
- Crew or equipment visible: When the teacher is lighting the gas under the kettle just before she dies. Reflections of three lights can be seen in the kettle. No kind of practical lighting is present in the next shot which could have created these reflections.
- Continuity: At the funeral, the two girls sitting next to Alex (across the aisle) disappear and the row of people shift over to accommodate their absence.
- Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): During the memorial service at the high school, the speaker says that 39 students and teachers were lost. But there were 40 in the class, with four teachers, and seven people got off the plane so it would be 37 people who were lost on the plane.
- Revealing mistakes: When the 747 explodes, the shadow of the plane can be seen still flying as the fire ball is falling.
- Continuity: Carter’s car, when first we see it, is a Chevy Nova SS. You can recognize that model by the letters “SS” on the front grille. In the night shot later when Alex and Billy and Carter meet at the memorial, the “SS” is missing. Subsequent shots are of a car that matches the first car.
- Errors in geography: As Carter’s car arrives at the crossing, a blank white crossbuck sign with a red border is seen. This is how the signs look in Canada (where the film was shot), but in the U.S. the signs say “Railroad Crossing”.
- Miscellaneous: In the alternate ending on the DVD, Clar has a photo of her and Alex where one of them is holding a white rose. This is the photo taken from the beginning of the movie, but the position of the photo is not the same angle that the photo was taken from.
- Continuity: At the memorial service, the speaker says that four teachers were aboard the plane, but earlier on Ms. Newton explains to the police officer that she has to be let back on the plane because the students will be alone. If there really were four teachers, two teachers still would have been on the plane.
- Factual errors: When Clear was in the car that was being attacked by the electrical wires, Alex said that the car was “grounded by the tires”. This is incorrect as the rubber tires are actually an insulator, hence they do not complete the circuit (ie. ground the car). Also, the car should, in theory, act as a partial Faraday cage, which means that all of the charge would be on the outside surface of the object (in this case the car), and that the person inside would be safe
- Continuity: When Carter and Alex are in a fight and the windows break after the plane explodes, a woman in a black suit who walks in front of Billy falls twice between shots.
- Continuity: When Alex opens the tin near the end, he opens the paper with his left hand, but in the next shot he puts the paper on the table with his right hand, with no time in between to transfer hands.
- Revealing mistakes: When Terri gets hit by the bus, there is a large crane parked in the road where the bus would’ve been coming from, making it impossible to have the speed at which it hit her.
- Errors in geography: Although this film is set in New York, the train that smashes Carter’s car is a “BC Rail” train, which only runs in Canada.
- Continuity: When the vodka is dripping through the coffee cup as Valerie Lewton walks to the computer it just drips onto the floor and leaves a trail of small drops. Later on when the computer ignites the small drops of vodka they have turned into a much wider trail. Also the coffee cup could not hold that much vodka.
- Continuity: When Alex is in the safe house and begins opening the can of food, he starts opening the can with the spoon in his right hand. When the angle changes it’s in his left hand, then again it’s in his right hand when he goes to eat it.
- Factual errors: FAA regulations prohibits the luggage belonging to a passenger that is not on board (or suddenly decides to get off) to be on the airplane. The airplane should not have taken off so soon right after Alex was removed from it as removing his luggage would take time. The reason they do this is because a passenger refusing to board an airplane while its luggage is on board could indicate its luggage is a bomb and the passenger does not want to be on board when it goes off.
- Errors in geography: A Panago Pizza restaurant can be seen down the street from the cafe where Alex and Clear are. There are no Panago Pizza locations in the States.
- Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): At the airport, the French teacher addresses the students with “ecoutez, les enfants!”, which means “listen up, children”. No French speaking person would ever address 16-18 years old with “enfants”, “enfant” meaning a (little) child up to perhaps ten or maybe twelve years at the most.
- Revealing mistakes: The electric cable that threatens Clear and Alex writhe about like a high-pressure water hose – cables don’t do that, however the cables are possessed by the Death force thus allowing them to act unnaturally.
- Continuity: In Ms. Lewton’s “death scene” she has one knife stuck in her chest and another that falls and rests near her waist. When Alex is taking the falling chair off of her they show three rapid shots. First the knife is there, then it’s gone, then it’s back again.
- Continuity: When Alex throws the magazine at the owl in the window and is shredded by the fan, a piece lands on his leg. However, when the camera angle switches away and them back to his leg, the piece has changed position. It has rotated.
- Crew or equipment visible: In the scene before Terry’s death, there is clearly a stunt double used when Carter knocks Billy off his bike.
- Revealing mistakes: In the scene before Terry’s death, where Cart
