An extraterrestrial race forced to live in slum-like conditions on Earth suddenly finds a kindred spirit in a government agent who is exposed to their biotechnology. |
Incorrectly regarded as goofs:Spoiler: Early in the film, we are told that people cut a hole to force their way into the spaceship. (The spaceship is thought to therefore no longer be space-worthy for Christopher’s voyage at the end of the film.) However, the full mechanization of the space craft is unknown, and the affected area could be sealed off from the rest of the ship.
Incorrectly regarded as goofs: Everyone has modern mobile phones. However, the movie is not actually set in the 1980s. This is the date of the aliens’ arrival. The events of the film are approximately 20+ years later, and on-screen date stamps put the movie explicitly in the year 2010.
Continuity: When Wikus is taken into hospital for the first time and sees his hand turning into a ‘prawn’s arm’, he freaks out and the doctor puts a mask over his mouth and nose to administer him some anesthetic and holds it with his hand. When the shot changes there is a rubber band holding the mask to his head, but there is no way that the doctor could have managed to put it that way.
Revealing mistakes: When Wikus is talking to his wife on cell phone after his escape, a perfectly healthy nail is visible under the band aid covering his finger.
Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): When the officers and Wikus’ family and friends where talking, their titles and names were placed on the screen. When one of the MNU officers were talking, they misspelled LIAISONS, spelling it LIASONS.
Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): When Wikus walks into the Nigerian base, Obesandjo says he has a lot of guts for a white man. But the word he uses for ‘white man’ is the Kiswahili word ‘mzungu’. Kiswahili is widely spoken in East Africa, but not in South Africa or Nigeria.
Revealing mistakes: Early in the film there are shots of ‘aliens not welcome here’ signs around the city. One sign begins ‘These public premises an the amenities thereof…’ – the ‘d’ on ‘and’ is missing.
Continuity: In an early scene where the screen looks like a news broadcast screen, the temperature goes from 38 Celsius, to in the 60s Fahrenheit, down to 20 Celsius in the same scene.
Incorrectly regarded as goofs: When Wikus is first admitted to hospital and is having his arm checked, it is quite clear that he has a hairy chest under his vest. Afterwards, he is seen with his shirt off and is hairless. However, due to the changes his body is undertaking (fingernails falling off) his hair may have fallen out.
Incorrectly regarded as goofs: The space ship covering a greater part of the city skyline manages to float in the air for 20 years without fuel. This defies Newton’s Third Law, as it would need fuel or power to oppose or equalize the 9.8m/s/s gravitational pull. However, it is only stated that the ship needs fuel to make the journey back to the home planet. It can be assumed that it has some automated system keeping it floating.
