“Demolition Man” Goofs List
- Continuity: During the car chase, Phoenix fires his MP5 out of the rear window of the police car. But when Spartan jumps onto the roof, the rear window is evidently unbroken.
- Audio/visual unsynchronized: When Simon is shooting at John Spartan during the car chase scene, he shoots out of the back of the car. There is no sound of the rear window glass breaking, and it never shows him breaking the rear window previously.
- Factual errors: Lenina Huxley complains about going to work on a Monday. A little while later the cyrogenic capsule shows the date August 3, 2032. August 3, 2032 will be a Tuesday.
- Revealing mistakes: Just after the building collapses due to the massive explosion at the beginning of the film, several crew members can be heard clapping and yelling.
- Continuity: The number of hostages said to have been killed varies between 20 and 40.
- Revealing mistakes: When Spartan’s car crashes through the police station sign towards the you can see the rig that is lifting the car up and pulling it over.
- Revealing mistakes: When Spartan’s car crashes through the police station sign, the glass explodes before the car hits the glass.
- Audio/visual unsynchronized: After John Spartan crashes through the police station sign he says, “All I need is a needle and a thread.” But when the camera is behind him and he says the line, “I really didn’t say that, did I?” his mouth doesn’t move when his face is in frame.
- Revealing mistakes: When the film first progresses to the future, the date is 3 August 2032. However when the police computer reports Warden William Smithers’ murder-death-kill, it states the date of death as 4 August 2032.
- Factual errors: In the beginning of the movie, a stockpile of C4 catches fire, and thus blows the whole building up. C4 only can be detonated by a detonation charge or blasting cap which is just a smaller explosive. If it catches fire, it burns slowly.
- Continuity: When John Spartan confronts Dr. Cocteau about his involvement with Simon, a black gun appears. The next shot reveals that Spartan is holding the gun to Dr. Cochtou’s head and the gun is now silver.
- Crew or equipment visible: When Pheonix falls through the glass at the museum into the LA exhibit, you can see him sliding down a visible safety rope. His feet are even in the position to be sliding down the rope
- Crew or equipment visible: This is during the firefight in the makeshift restaurant down in the sewer. When John Spartan grabs the table to use as a shield, the cable controlling the squibs is visible.
- Continuity: When Spartan and Huxley arrive at the cryogenics place to battle Phoenix and those surviving CryoCons, Phoenix sees them on the monitor walking into the building and Spartan is on the left and Huxley on the right. In the next shot, Spartan is on the right.
- Continuity: When Phoenix first gets out he makes his way to a computer and the police come to arrest him. Phoenix takes one of the policeman and pushes his head through the side glass pane and walks away to fight the other officers, but when Phoenix goes back over to the computer the glass is not broken
- Continuity: Several times during the movie, Simon Phoenix’s shoulder pads (one side resembles an ATV tire) switch sides.
- Continuity: When Phoenix climbs out of the manhole, his tire armor changes sides from shot to shot.
- Continuity: During the final shoot out in the cryogenics lab, Spartan is firing a single handgun at Pheonix from behind a computer. He then dives to another terminal, now firing two handguns at once. When we cut back to the new terminal, he’s now holding and reloading a single gun.
- Continuity: During the final battle in the CryoPrison, the L-shaped remote that Simon Phoenix is using reverses position (wider top section to the right, then to the left).
- Factual errors: In the beginning when Simon finishes using the dagger to puncture the gasoline barrels, he lays it back on the table and it is dry. You can see the gasoline spraying all over as he jabs each plastic barrel. He would also have the gasoline on his hands when lighting the cigarette.
- Continuity: When Simon Phoenix is in the museum gathering up the weaponry, he is seen wearing an ammo shell vest. In the first shot, two of the shell slots are empty but in the following shots they are both full.
- Factual errors: Towards the beginning, when gasoline is everywhere and Simon holds the torch close to the ground, it should ignite. It’s the fumes that ignite, not the gasoline itself.
- Continuity: Spartan’s body position and mouth change several times while he is supposedly frozen. Before he freezes, his mouth is closed and his body turned. When he freezes, his mouth is open and his hands placed facing up (showing surprise, etc.). The levels of surprise shown in the mouth and body position change throughout.
- Miscellaneous: The Verbal Morality Law computer doesn’t react when Simon Phoenix says “Damn, I’m possessed!”
- Continuity: In one scene Spartan changes seats with Huxley in a police car. When Spartan sits on the driver’s seat Huxley can be clearly seen in the background. But after they switched their seats Spartan doesn’t appear behind her.
- Continuity: When Simon Phoenix is in the museum querying the computer about the “linear accelerator gun”, the computer voice states that the gun achieves fusion in 2.6 minutes. However, the computer screen indicates “fission time 2.6 minutes” on the diagram of the weapon.
- Continuity: Zach Lamb is stationed outside the sewer when Spartan, Huxley and Garcia go down. When Phoenix comes up and finds the car, Lamb is missing.
- Plot holes: John Spartan is incarcerated because his actions supposedly lead to the deaths of Simon Phoenix’s hostages; he is confused because his thermal scan of the site did not show the hostages, yet their remains are found after the explosion. At the end of the movie Simon Phoenix reveals that the hostages were already dead before John Spartan’s raid – any competent medical examiner would easily be able to deduce from a number of factors (for example, the lack of smoke damage to the lungs) that the hostages were dead before the explosion, thus clearing John Spartan of any wrong doing.
- Plot holes: Following the death of Dr. Raymond Cocteau, it is clear they are four CryoCons still free besides Simon Phoenix. Two battle Spartan and Huxley as they enter the building. Huxley knocks one out and shoots the other dead. The fate of the other two cons, including Jesse Ventura’s character, is left unresolved.
- Continuity: Several times during the opening credits the devices placed on Spartan’s left breast and left temple change sides. Evidently, some shots were flipped.
- Continuity: When Lenina Huxley meets John Spartan she says that there were 11 murder death kills but Simon Phoenix escaped he killed 2 cryo-prison guards, the prison doctor and the warden and than killed or incapacitated a 6-man police squad.
- Revealing mistakes: When Phoenix punches (and kicks) the glass to try to take the guns, the display glass sounded like it was plastic, but when he threw the guard into the display glass, it shattered, like it really was glass.
- Continuity: When told to go to auto drive or manual drive, the steering wheel doesn’t always do the same thing. When told to go to manual at one point in the movie it expands and another time it contracts.
- Continuity: When Phoenix is fighting the police at the information/teller machine right after he escapes, the fourth cop he engages gets his sunglasses punched off. They change the angle and he has them on again (as he gets shoved to the ground).
- Continuity: When Spartan and Phoenix are fighting in the museum’s “20th century street sample” room, Spartan beats Phoenix with a TV twice, throwing him into a water puddle. By the time Phoenix stands up (still with both of his feet in the puddle), Spartan climbs the car’s trunk and sticks his laser baton in the water, electrocuting Phoenix as he is thrown upon the car’s bonnet/windshield as a result. While Phoenix is in the air, it is perfectly visible that there’s nothing in the car. However, when he lands on the car in the next shot, his “magnetic accelerator gun” mysteriously appears in the windshield.
- Continuity: In the scene where Phoenix is at the information cube in the museum, there is a handful of people wearing black robes and round black hats circling around towards his right side, When the scene changes and the shot is made from his left side, these people turn into Chinese, wearing somewhat normal clothes and he makes fun of them.
- Continuity: When Phoenix pops his head out of th
