• Continuity: When Szpilman crawls past the woman who was shot in the back and died kneeling in front of the hospital (before she reached the staircase), she has moved forward visibly (and is now in front of the stairs).
• Anachronisms: When Szpilman is playing in the closing scenes, the piano’s logo “Steinway & Sons” is the modernized style that came into use in the 1990s.
• Continuity: When Szpilman is crossing the bridge, the same extra (wearing the glasses) passes him twice, in the space of two shots.
• Anachronisms: When “the pianist” goes to his friend of last resort for help it is deep winter in Poland with snow. On the table in his friends flat is a bunch of fresh yellow roses. How do you get roses in mid-winter wartime Poland? Also, the following morning the roses have mysteriously changed to apricot-colored roses.
• Continuity: The tin of gherkins Szpilman finds in the destroyed house changes size between shots.
• Audio/visual unsynchronized: When Szpilman’s father is slapped by the German officer, the officer is obviously wearing gloves which should not have made a sharp sound.
• Incorrectly regarded as goofs: The bayonet used by the German sergeant to open the sack of beans is not German issue. It appears to be a Turkish Model 1890 bayonet. However, in war it is common to use a weapon stolen or bought from another country.
• Audio/visual unsynchronized: There is a scene in which Szpilman is walking in formation along the street with a group of Jewish workmen. A German officer selects various men and then executes them one by one by shooting them in the head. As the last man is shot. The hollow sound of a spent shell casing striking the ground is heard. Instead of an empty shell, a complete cartridge with the bullet is shown falling to the ground.
• Anachronisms: The infamous Sports Palace speech by Josef Goebbels (18th February 1943) is heard on the radio in 1939.
• Continuity: When Szpilman is told he has to leave the first apartment he’s hiding in, his hair is parted and hanging down either side of his face. In the next shot, when he sits down to try to smoke the cigarette, his hair is combed back with no part visible.
• Continuity: When Szpilman is forced to leave his first hiding place after breaking the dishes, he has significant stubble on his face. However, when he reached Dorota’s apartment in the next scene, he’s clean shaven.

• Anachronisms: Reeboks (first made in 1978) at a 1972 Republican convention.
• Continuity: When Ron returns home from the hospital the subtitle says “…1969″. The colors of the leaves and the dead leaves in the street indicate it is autumn. A few scenes later the subtitle reads “July 4, 1969″, and the implication is that time has moved forward.
• Anachronisms: In the welcome home parade in 1969 we see two Elvises with the American eagle jumpsuit. This was not made for Elvis until his Aloha From Hawaii show in 1973.
• Factual errors: During a scene identified as July 4, 1969, the Kovic family is watching “Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In” (1967). Laugh-In aired on Monday evenings, and July 4, 1969 was a Friday.
• Anachronisms: When the recruiter visits Ronnie’s school, he incorrectly refers to Marine boot camp as “13 weeks of hell,” when Marine boot camp was only 8 weeks during the timeframe of the movie.
• Continuity: When Ron visits the family of the man he accidentally killed in Vietnam, the chair swing is broken. When he comes out of the house moments later, the swing is fixed.
• Anachronisms: When Ron is thinking about what to put away in his room before boot camp, he stuffs away a toy pistol. The model pistol is a Beretta 92f, not made until 1983.
• Anachronisms: The voice of Mel Allen is heard on the radio calling Mantle’s 491st home run which would have taken place in 1966. Allen was fired after the 1964 season
• Crew or equipment visible: When Ron and his friends walk out of Boyer’s Ice Cream shop, you can see crew and equipment in the reflection on the cars.
• Errors in geography: When Ron is taking the train to Upstate NY a Mass Bay Transit Authority (MBTA) commuter train is used.
• Crew or equipment visible: Reflections of camera and operator visible in the shiny black brim of Ron’s hat during the second parade.
• Anachronisms: The song “American Pie” is played twice in scenes that are indicated as being in 1969. American Pie was not released until 1971.
• Factual errors: In the movie, Ron is visiting a leader of the 1970 Syracuse University strike. As students listen to speakers (among them the late Abbie Hoffman) an army of Syracuse policemen, identifiable by their shoulder patches, mass on campus. Wearing full riot gear, they rap their shields with their nightsticks, and, unprovoked, attack the student assembly. One even cracks wheelchair-bound Ron over the head. New York State Sen. Nancy Larraine Hoffmann, a Democrat, was a Syracuse student in 1970 who participated in that strike. “It was totally unlike the characterization in the movie,” she says, describing the peaceful week-long strike. “There was no police presence even within sight. At no time was there any show of force, or any attempt to disperse students listening to speakers. It troubles me to see police officers maligned for Hollywood sensationalism.”
• Factual errors: In the movie, Ron is, by 1972, a full-fledged anti-war activist. Ron materializes on the floor of the Republican National Convention with a few other Vietnam Veterans Against the War. They make a scene, attract a few cameras, block the aisle, and rile the delegates, a mass of bloated Republican faces in straw boaters. One of them spits on Ron. Security guards move in, roughly pushing and pulling the veterans from the hall, physically preventing reporters from following. Outside, Ron is thrown from his wheelchair by an undercover cop and beaten. Actually, Robert Dornan persuaded security guards to let Kovic into the convention. Mr. Dornan says he made Mr. Kovic promise not to make a scene. That, however, did not stop the Vietnam veteran, who joined forces with two other disabled anti- war veterans. “It was not as big a disturbance as the movie showed, but it was a disturbance,” says Mr. Dornan. “They were screaming. The guards came down and politely pulled their chairs backward. [They] put them out peaceably.” A United Press International report of the incident describes the scene this way: “After about five minutes, security agents wheeled them in protesting out a side door. I went out and watched him and the other two congratulating one another, bragging about what they’d accomplished.”
• Factual errors: The movie major is a decidedly unsympathetic character who ends his discussion with young Kovic by threatening to “take his head” if any more is said about the matter. The real-life major, traced by U.S. Marine Lt. Col. Fred Peck, would not consent to an interview. Through Lt. Col. Peck, the major confirmed Ron Kovic voiced such concerns to him. The major investigated and concluded it was unlikely Mr. Kovic had killed the Marine. Subsequently, the major promoted Mr. Kovic, making him the leader of a new scout group.
• Anachronisms: A 1957 Chevrolet convertible (released in the fall of 1956) is used in the 1956 Fourth of July parade.
• Continuity: Ron’s family watches JFK’s inauguration in Washington, DC in January 1961. It is sub-freezing there. Outside the Kovic home in Long Island, NY at the same time, it appears to be early fall.
• Anachronisms: A Jackie Gleason Blvd. street sign can be seen at the 1972 Republican National Convention in Miami Beach. The street wasn’t named that until after Gleason’s death in the late ’80s.

• Continuity: The white University of Illinios football in Senator Irvings office (in the background by Janine Roth’s head for much of the interview), changes positions during the interview. At times its level on the shelf and at other times its sitting crooked.
• Continuity: After Rodriguez rolls onto his back so that Arian can see the extent of his injury, he is then shown alternately on his left side (correct) and his stomach (impossible).
• Continuity: Janine writes “Whatever it takes” in her notebook, when she is at the Senator’s office, at a different point of the page (higher) than later shown, when she revises her writings.
• Factual errors: When Rodriguez and Arian are giving their presentation, they place letters of induction on the projector to show the class they enlisted. A letter of induction is a draft notice. The draft was over for over thirty years when the movie takes place, and since they volunteered, they would have used DD Form 4/1 “Enlistment and Reenlistment Document”
• Errors in geography: When Janine is riding past the White House in the taxi near the end of the movie, her view of the White House, as represented during her passing, cannot be obtained from a taxi since those streets are closed to vehicular traffic. Also, her view of the rows of graves in Arlington Cemetery during the same sequence cannot be obtained from a taxi since the paved paths in Arlington are closed to ordinary vehicular traffic as a taxi would be.
• Continuity: When Janine and Senator Irving are leaving his office he puts on his blazer and his collar flips up, he attempts to flip it down as he lowers his arms but fails. When the camera switches angles his arms are down and magically so is his collar.
• Continuity: When Senator Irving returns to his office after receiving a phone call, there is a lamp positioned slightly in front of the framed article (about him) that was written by Janine. When Janine was looking at the article previously, there was no such obstruction.
• Continuity: Prof. Malley describes Todd’s position in the early lecture as off to the side away from most of the class. But in the flashbacks, Todd is in the middle of everyone.
• Errors in geography: In the time between the 2 soldiers falling, the helicopter would have traveled several hundred yards; not the few feet separating their impact points in the snow.

• Continuity: After a very dusty slide into base during the baseball game, Crandall jumps up to introduce himself to Moore, at which point, his t-shirt is perfectly clean and neatly tucked into his pants.
• Audio/visual unsynchronized: When helicopters are landing or taking off, the sound effects are that of turbine engine RPM being increased or decreased as during engine start-up and shutdown on the ground. RPM is relatively constant during takeoff and landing. (This seems to be a common mistake in many films using helicopter sound effects.)
• Anachronisms: Joe Galloway’s Nikon camera shown throughout the movie is a model “F Photomic FTN”, first sold in Sept. 1968, but it was November 14, 1965 at 10:48 a.m., when Lt. Col. Hal Moore and his young troopers touched down at Landing Zone X-Ray in the Ia Drang.
• Anachronisms: At the soldiers’ farewell party, they’re singing along to Sam & Dave’s hit, “Hold On, I’m Coming”. This song wasn’t released until 1966, after the battle depicted in the movie had already taken place.
• Factual errors: In the film credits the following appears “With special thanks to: …And the 3RD Ranger Training Battalion…” No such unit exists or ever has. There is a 3RD Battalion, 75TH Ranger Regiment and 4TH through 6TH Ranger Training Battalions.
• Revealing mistakes: When an A1 Skyraider drops napalm on the attacking NVA troops flames erupt about 30 feet behind where the napalm is dropped.
• Anachronisms: When the soldiers are preparing to board the buses at Ft Benning, in front of the airborne towers you can see a strobe MP light over Lt Col Moore’s right shoulder.
• Anachronisms: As the soldiers of 7th Cavalry ride into LZ X-Ray, they are holding their rifles with the muzzles pointed down. At the time of the battle, airmobile training was to hold the weapons muzzle up – in case of an accidental discharge, it was thought preferable to risk a round hitting the main rotor than to ensure that it went through the fuel tank (located directly under the troops).
• Anachronisms: The U-Haul trailer being pulled by the station wagon in the beginning of the movie is a 1980’s or newer U-Haul paint scheme.
• Anachronisms: In the final scene when Lt. Col Moore steps aboard the Huey, he is seen wearing bright orange memory-foam type ear plugs for hearing protection. These types of ear plugs were not developed until 1967, two years after the Battle of Ia Drang.
• Anachronisms: When Lieutenant Colonel Moore is seen calling and talking to his platoon that is at risk of being overrun in the creek bed, the handset of the AN/PRC-25 radio is a newer-styled angular handset (H-33B/PT) not used until later in the Vietnam conflict. The handset of the AN/PRC-25 (“Prick-Twenty-five”) radio appropriate to 1965 would have been a rounded version (H-138/U).
• Continuity: The number of helicopters in the initial approach to LZ X-Ray changes a number of times. There are six helicopters on the field ready to go, then in the next two scenes there are only four choppers. in the CGI scene while they are approaching there are suddenly upwards of twenty helicopters before returning to the six at the LZ.
• Factual errors: The conversation between SGM Plumley and Joe Galloway regarding his status as a non-combatant did not take place as shown in the film. The conversation actually took place more than a week earlier, and it was between Joe Galloway and an Army Special Forces Officer, Major (later Colonel) Charles Beckwith. Joe Galloway arrived with in the Ia Drang with an M-16.
• Factual errors: In the opening scene that depicts the destruction of Groupement Mobile No.100, the officers are shown wearing kepis, implying that they are members of the Foreign Legion. However, there were no Legion units present. GM 100 consisted of the 1st and 2nd Korea Battalions, Battalion de Marche of the 43rd Colonial Infantry and the 2nd Group of the 10th Colonial Artillery.
• Factual errors: In the scene when the American soldier in the cut-off platoon gets hit with a Phosphorous Grenade you can see that his M16 has a chrome plated bolt. The chrome plated bolt was not introduced until roughly 1967, close to 2 years after the battle of the Ia Drang.
• Factual errors: In the beginning, the French Group Mobile 100 is ambushed and killed to the last man. In reality, the group was ambushed several times and in all of them, they were able to escape, though only after suffering severe casualties.
• Incorrectly regarded as goofs: In the scene where Joe Galloway helps defend the aid post, as he aims his M-16 it can clearly be seen that there is no round chambered, since the bolt can be seen in the forward position. However, the M-16 fires from the closed-bolt position, so when a round is chambered, the bolt will be forward.
• Factual errors: In the second night of the battle there appears a full Moon, but in reality on 11/15/1965 the Moon was in the 3rd quarter.
• Revealing mistakes: In the seen where Col Moore is signing his will, the will and fonts is clearly made from an ink jet printer. It should have been from a typewriter.
• Factual errors: As pointed out during the beginning of the movie. The battalion was issued “a new weapon”. This would imply that they were issued the original variant of the M-16 rifle. During the battle scenes you can see several rifles that have a Forward Assist. This was not on the original variant of the M-16, it was introduced on the next model. The M-16 A-1. The Forward Assist is used to help seat a round into the chamber and is still used on the M-16/M-4 rifle.
• Continuity: In the scene just following the ambush of first platoon’s patrol, Moore’s flashlight is shot and all the glass is gone. In a moment, after a scene cut, there is a piece of glass there.
• Anachronisms: In the scene where the soldiers are celebrating being sent to war, the Sam and Dave song “Hold On, I’m Coming” is playing at the party. This song was actually not released until five months after the battle of La Trang, in March 1966.
• Factual errors: SPOILER: The bayonet charge, accompanied by the gunship, that supposedly won the battle in the movie, never took place. Col. Moore’s unit simply withdrew as reinforcements arrived and took over.
• Anachronisms: When Moore is kissing his children goodnight, the kid in the top bunk has a modern-day baseball batting helmet with ear-flaps hanging from the bed post
• Factual errors: In the opening scene, French troops are shown with their beret insignia on the left side of their forehead. In reality, and contrary to most countries in the world, French soldiers have their insignia on the right side of their forehead.
• Revealing mistakes: While Galloway is telling the tale of his two great-grandfathers, one of the body bags in the foreground is quite visibly breathing.

• Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): SPOILER: Multiple times while a hostage, Capt. Sam Cahill’s (Tobey Maguire) character refers to his private as “Private” and indicates that he is the superior officer by giving orders. If you were ever in a hostile situation, you are to refer to the other military officers/personnel as numbers (social security numbers) or by other agreed upon protocol. You are never to indicate who is in charge and therefore offer up (that) information to the captors.
• Factual errors: In the beginning, dated in the movie as 10/7/2007, Sam says he’s leaving “in 4 days” (10/11/07). Later, at the dinner table, he tells his brother he’s leaving “Tuesday”. 10/11/2007 was a Thursday.

• Factual errors: There are a number of inaccuracies in the representation of battles and other incidents surrounding the War of Independence, as well as in details of personnel, equipment and uniforms. This is not a documentary.
• Factual errors: On the wanted poster for “The Ghost,” the name of General Cornwallis is misspelled as “Cornwallace.” Arguably fair, since spelling was less standard in those days, though you’d expect the name of a high government official to be spelled consistently in government documents. (This could have been an in-joke reference to Braveheart (1995)).
• Continuity: When Benjamin is talking to General Cornwallis, the straps on Benjamin’s shoulder move.
• Factual errors: SPOILER: In the final battle the British advance the full battalion. The officer giving the orders would be a Major or a Colonel. So why is the CO standing in the front line of the attack? Officers above Captains were meant to be mounted and definitely not in the front line of battle.
• Incorrectly regarded as goofs: SPOILER: After Martin parlays with Cornwallis and tricks him into what would eventually be revealed as a bogus prisoner exchange – Martin’s men for what turns out to be 20+ hay-stuffed Redcoat uniforms – we see the freed militia prisoners all departing the British fort on horseback, even though a large portion of those captured were not on horses to begin with. We see however, that as Benjamin Martin is leaving, Gabriel Martin and another man bringing horses up for the freed prisoners.
• Incorrectly regarded as goofs: For a split second, on an American tent at the end of the movie, a flag is seen that does not use the circular star arrangement, but the star arrangement was not yet standardized.
• Incorrectly regarded as goofs: When the militiamen return to the town after the massacre, a building is brightly lit; while it looks like an electric light to some, others have said this was reflected sunlight.
• Anachronisms: In the Charleston scene exiting the town hall, an extra is wearing visible, foam ear plugs.
• Anachronisms: When Tavington is searching for the child hiding under the table his boots are clearly visible and certainly of the “Left-Right” variety. Boots were made on straight lasts until the 1800s.
• Continuity: When Benjamin, carrying the flag, rides up to the column of militiamen, he is first shown carrying the flag in his left saddle holster; the next shot shows him with the flag in the right holster.
• Continuity: In the battle scene where militiamen turned back from retreat by Benjamin clash with the first line of the English infantry, Benjamin, carrying the flag, is shown twice clashing with the enemy.
• Anachronisms: Modern snare drums.
• Anachronisms: The ships attacking Cornwallis’ army at the end are carrying the modern blue, white and red French flag but this was only adapted after the French revolution: French ships during American Revolution should be carrying the royal fleur-de-lis insignia.
• Factual errors: In the scene where the militia ambushed the British by hiding in a field, they attacked them from parallel lines on either side. This is a blunder. Under no style of war would anyone fire on someone in that formation without being at an elevated position because they could end up shooting each other.
• Miscellaneous: In the scene where the British raid Charlotte’s plantation, Tavington looks under the tablecloth to see if anyone is hiding under the table. At this time, Nathan is hiding on the outside of the table on the right side. The tablecloth hangs several inches from the floor, so Tavington should have easily seen Nathan hiding on the other side the tablecloth through the gap between the tablecloth and the floor.
• Factual errors: Many of the dresses worn by Charlotte would have been considered quite revealing and scandalous at the time and wouldn’t have been worn by a woman of high society who valued her reputation.
• Factual errors: Near the end, when the French fleet is bombarding Cornwallis’ army, French ships’s hulls are painted black with yellow stripes along the gunports. This scheme was characteristic of the Royal British Navy and it only became popular during the Napoleonic wars: French ships of the time were either black and white or natural wood color
• Audio/visual unsynchronized: Many times throughout the movie when the fifes and drums are playing, the fife player’s fingers and the drummer’s sticks do not match the music.
• Factual errors: Benjamin Martin shoots a British soldier who is on a moving horse using a flintlock pistol at a range of approximately 100 yards. A ball from a black powder pistol would not even reach that sort of distance and hitting a moving target at that distance would be difficult even with a modern pistol. The effective range of a blackpowder pistol is about 20 feet as the barrel is too short to allow all the powder to burn before the ball leaves the barrel (too low a muzzle velocity to achieve any sort of range)
• Revealing mistakes: Aunt Charlotte Selton and Captain Wilkins have reverse suntans (raccoon eyes), obviously from wearing sunglasses out in the sun. The weight of the glasses left actual imprints on the side of her nose, which are easily seen in several close-ups.
• Anachronisms: In the first shot of the film, two of the children are seen playing with alphabet cards. These famous “Hotch Potch, posture master” cards weren’t printed until 1782. However the scene takes place in 1776.
• Anachronisms: When the militia are about to be hanged, just before Benjamin Martin rides in, you see the British prepare for the hanging by testing tying sandbags to the noose and opening the trap doors. In actuality, hanging with trap doors didn’t happen until after the war. (In the DVD commentary, the director acknowledges this and says they did this because “it looked cool”.)
• Continuity: In his monologue Gabriel says that his friend fell at the Battle of Elizabethtown, however, when you see him writing the letter it says that his friend was killed at the Battle of Monmouth.
• Revealing mistakes: Supposedly stabbed in the chest by Tavington, Gabriel can briefly be seen with the sword between his side and his left arm.
• Incorrectly regarded as goofs: When the British officer asks who the messenger is, Gabriel says it was him and walks down the stairs towards the officer. The shot cuts to the officer then back to Gabriel, who is now wearing a blue coat, which he didn’t have on in the previous shot. However, he’s seen picking it up.
• Continuity: When Susan Martin runs to Benjamin on the South Carolina shore to protest his leaving, her right braid switches position from on her back to on her chest, depending on camera angle.
• Continuity: When Benjamin Martin has his first fight with redcoats, he hides behind a tree as it is hit, tearing the bark. When he comes from behind to return fire the bark is perfect.
• Continuity: When Gabriel is reading the letter he is writing home aloud, the only line in the entire letter that matches what he has said is the line he is currently writing. Nothing in the long letter before the bottom line comes even close to what Gabriel read.
• Continuity: When Gabriel is in line to enlist, he is facing different directions when Benjamin is talking to him.
• Factual errors: At least twice (at the fight at the river and at the battle near the end) Tavington loads his pistol and discards his ramrod after he’s done with it. This would make it impossible to reload the pistol again, and it is unlikely that a highly trained British colonel would do such a thing. At the river, dropping the rod is understandable, given the pressure, but tossing it some distance away isn’t.
• Continuity: When Tavington kills the preacher and then Gabe, he is twice seen tossing his ramrod rather far away in successive shots.
• Revealing mistakes: In the final battle, a cannonball rolls on the ground and cuts off the legs of several soldiers in its path. One soldier’s leg falls apart before the ball even makes contact with it.
• Factual errors: When the militia is coming over the hill to see the British military lined up and waiting for the final battle scene you see a distant cannon fire and almost immediately impact very close to the American lines. With the range of the shot it would have taken 2-3 seconds for the ball to cover the distance.

For example, only 12 Americans died in the real battle. The real Battle of Cowpens was a mostly cavalry affair and was over in less than an hour.
