“Rocky III” Goofs List

Continuity: During the final bout, immediately before Rocky knocks out Lang, the position of the two fighters alternates from the middle of the ring (in long shots) to up against the ropes (in close-ups) and back again.
Crew or equipment visible: During the final fight scene a handheld movie camera (used for shooting ground-level shots) is visible on the far side of the ring. Full-size cameras are also visible in some shots.
Continuity: In the second fight with Clubber Lang, between the first and second rounds, the shot is flopped – the word “Clubber” is backwards on his shorts and one of his crew’s robes clearly has “World Champion” backwards as well.
Continuity: Before the final fight, the crowd scenes contain the picture boards of Rocky and Apollo in the background, making it obvious that it is the same crowd footage from Rocky II (1979).
Continuity: There are multiple errors with the time-line and chronology of this film and it’s relationship with the previous two movies. Most obviously, Rocky (1976) is set primarily in 1975, with the title fight taking place on January 1, 1976. Rocky II (1979) is also set in 1976, with the title fight taking place on Thanksgiving, November 25. The events in Rocky III are said to take place three years later, placing it in 1979/1980. However, the newspaper advertising the charity match between Rocky and Thunderlips gives a date of 1982. Another major discrepancy is in relation to Micky’s age and date of death. In the first film, Micky says he is 76, placing his birth in either 1899 or 1900. In Rocky III however, his headstone lists his date of birth as 1905, making him 71 in the original film. Furthermore, the headstone lists his date of death as 1981, which implies that he was 76; the same age he was four years previously (in the original film).
Continuity: At the beginning of the final fight between Rocky and Clubber, we see Rocky take his robe off in a close-up shot and he has a towel around his neck. We then see a distant shot and the towel is gone. Then we come to a slightly closer shot and the towel is back again.
Continuity: When Apollo and Duke are reviewing Rocky’s first fight with Clubber and discussing how many rounds Rocky could potentially last, the footage they are watching is in black and white. However, during this scene there is a shot of Apollo looking at the screen, and the lights reflecting off his face show that the footage he is watching is in color.
Boom mic visible: In the beginning of the film, there’s an overhead shot (of Rocky and “Thunderlips” facing one another) where the shadow of the boom mic is visible on the back of Thunderlips’s head.
Factual errors: When Rocky is in training for the re-match with Clubber and is having flashbacks to the first fight, they cut to a scene in black and white where Rocky is taking an uppercut to the body. It is clearly visible that Rocky is wearing the “Stars and Stripes” trunks that Apollo gives to him right before the re-match. Rocky could not have been wearing these trunks because they hadn’t even been given to him yet.
Factual errors: During the first fight with Clubber while Mickey is lying on the table in the locker room, the doctor is overheard to say “his blood pressure is 200 over 50 we’d better start CPR.” In actuality, the heart must be beating for there to be a blood pressure and CPR is only initiated when the heart and or respirations cease.
Factual errors: At Micky’s funeral, there are only 4 people present (Rocky, Adrien, Paulie and Al the Cutman. In order for a Jewish service/prayer to take place, there must be a minimum of 10 men (Minyan). If there is not a Minyan then the prayers have no validity and therefore strangers are often invited to the prayers ensuring there are 10 or more men.
Continuity: When Adrian and Rocky talk on the beach, in the first, zoomed-out shot of them together, there are numerous ships in the water along with some minor debris. In the close-up shots that follow, there are no ships, just the minor debris.
Continuity: When talking to Adrian on the beach, Rocky appears to have not shaved in a few days. About halfway through the scene, he suddenly appears shaved.
Factual errors: The newspaper shown just after the “Rocky vs. Thunderlips” match shows a date of “Wednesday, May 15, 1982″. May 15 fell on a Saturday in 1982.
Continuity: The newspaper shown just after the “Rocky vs. Thunderlips” match shows a date of “Wednesday, May 15, 1982″. When Mickey dies later in the film, his tombstone says he died “August 15, 1981″, which was 9 months earlier.
Continuity: Mickey’s tombstone shows the year he was born as “1905″, which is inconsistent with material from Rocky (1976). The first movie takes place between November 25th 1975 and January 1st 1976. Mickey in the first movie tells Rocky he is 76 years old, which would make the year he was born be either 1899 (if Mickey’s birthday was between January and November) or 1898 (if his birthday was in December).
Crew or equipment visible: After the final fight where Rocky and Apollo are alone in the gym. You can see a crew member walk by in the bottom left corner while Rocky and Apollo both get into the ring.
Revealing mistakes: During the last fight scene, Rocky is punching away at Clubber, and the two seemingly glide across from one end of the ring to the other. If you listen carefully, you can hear the sound of the rolling platform that they are standing on.
Continuity: In Rocky’s first title defense, he begins the fight with golden gloves, but at the end of the fight, his gloves are black.
Miscellaneous: As the scene depicting the dedication of the Rocky statue opens, the camera is focused on the snare drum of one of the high school band members. If one looks closely, it is clear that Mr. T autographed the top of the drum for the band member at some point before filming the scene.
Continuity: When Mickey gets sick and lays down on the table in the locker room, he has his knit cap on as he starts to lay down. The shot switches to a different angle as he continues to lay down, and now his cap is off and laying on the table next to him.

Continuity: When Rocky is talking to Tommy in the basement, there is a bruise under Rocky Jr.’s left eye. In the next shot the bruise is under his right eye.
Continuity: When they are all at the table eating dinner, Paulie grabs Adrian’s plate. In the next shot he grabs it again.
Continuity: In the street fight, Paulie is shown holding onto Rocky Jr. But in the next shot Paulie is shown alone. In the next shot, he is holding Rocky Jr. again.
Continuity: In the final scene Rocky gives Rocky Jr. the boxing glove on a chain, when he holds it up it is dangling several inches down. But in the next shot it is now dangling only an inch or two, even though he didn’t move it.
Continuity: When Rocky is getting off the plane his son comes running through the crowd, Rocky has no sunglasses on when he sees his son, but when he hugs his son, his sunglasses are on.
Continuity: During the final street fight scene, while Rocky is being congratulated Tommy Gunn is shown in the background getting up. When they cut to Gunn, he is shown on the ground.
Revealing mistakes: When Tommy Gunn is delivering one of his punches in the big fight, the Adidas symbol on his shirt is on the wrong side, revealing that it’s a mirrored image.
Incorrectly regarded as goofs: Rocky’s championship belt is in the basement despite burying it with Apollo Creed’s body in Rocky IV. However, as both men held the championship it is likely that both would have had replicas that they could permanently keep.
Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): When Rocky Jr. is arguing with his dad about Christmas, Rocky tells him to remember last year, even though last Christmas he was fighting in Russia and was not with his son then either.
Factual errors: When Rocky arrives back in the US from Russia, he is seen getting off an Ilyushin IL-86 jet. Assuming he arrived back in Philadelphia from Moscow (a distance of just over 4,000 miles) it would be impossible to fly that distance on an IL-86, which has a maximum range of just over 3,000 miles.
Continuity: The attorney’s state that Rocky’s son was willed Mickey Goldmill’s gym in 1982, even though in Rocky III it is said that Mickey died on August 15, 1981.
Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): In the scene where Rocky is taking a shower in the beginning of the film he calls out “Hey Tony” calling to Duke. It was never clear to what his first name might have been, until Rocky Balboa revealed during the fight conference that his name was Duke Evers. Sylvester Stallone obviously called out the actor’s name “Tony” instead of his character’s “Duke”.
Continuity: Even though the events in this movie are supposed to be directly after the fight in Rocky 4, Adrian’s hair is about 5 or 6 inches longer than during the fight.
Continuity: During Rocky’s fight with Drago in Rocky 4, Duke’s mustache was black. In the beginning of this movie, which takes place in the locker room after the fight, his mustache is noticeably gray.
Continuity: When Rocky has his first press conference at the airport, after returning from Russia, he is approached by Duke who is forcefully challenging him to fight Cane. At one point Adrian stands to protest and after an immediate retort from Rocky and Duke the camera shows a wide shot and Adrian in still in her seat beside the podium.
Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): After the fight is over, Rocky makes the statement that (paraphrased) he is sure that his kid has been watching the fight even though he should have already been in bed. With the time difference in Moscow, even if the fight had finished in Russia by mid-night then it would have been 6 p.m., or early evening in Philly.
Incorrectly regarded as goofs: The large house Rocky is forced to leave is not the same house as in Rocky IV and III. However many years pass between Rocky becoming rich and losing his fortune, so it is entirely possible the family moved at some point during the height of Rocky’s popularity.
Continuity: In the final sequence when Tommy Gun and Rocky are fighting, Tommy Gun throws several punches with his left hand, but in the cutaway shots he lands those same punches with his right hand.
Continuity: At the end of Rocky IV (1985), Rocky’s son (born in 1976) is 9. However, at the beginning of Rocky V, which in the movie’s time-line takes place only a week after the end of Rocky IV, the boy is already 12 or 13. In addition, Rocky IV is set in 1985 (we know this because it is nearly the 9-year anniversary of Rocky and Adrian, and they were married in 1976), yet in this movie, Rocky Jr. and his friends are watching the 1989 movie Christmas Vacation (1989).
Continuity: Rocky Jr.’s jacket jumps on and off his shoulder between shots when he goes to the gym to tell Rocky that he got it back.

Continuity: The stolen money recovered from Chozen shifts between Daniel’s left and right hand during the chase scene.
Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): When Mr. Miyagi goes to put his glasses on when he receives the letter at the beginning of the film, he sticks one of the arms of his glasses in his eye by accident before putting them on properly.
Miscellaneous: During the times when characters are speaking in Japanese, in the Spanish translation version of the movie it is translated into gibberish. They simply try to sound Japanese, but in reality are just making noise.
Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): When Sato helps Daniel during the hurricane, he tells Chozen “Now, to you, I am dead.” But when Chozen is fighting Daniel towards the end, he tells Sato “I cannot hear you Uncle, I am dead to you, remember?”
Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): The Air Force soldier tells them he has never heard of Tomi Village. Tomi Village is right on the other side of the fence from where they stopped in the air field. How could Mr Miyagi not know where it was if it was that close to the Air base?
Continuity: After they left the air base, it was daytime. They drove over a small bridge, and in the next shot, they were on the other side of the same bridge but it was then much darker out as if they had been driving for a while.
Audio/visual unsynchronized: In at least one version of the film, during the scene where Daniel is being challenged to break the ice blocks and Miyagi is talking to him, suddenly Miyagi’s voice is heard over the film dialogue saying “HOT DAWG!”, which is from his “Happy Days” role.
Errors in geography: Kadena Airbase (where Tomi Village is next to) is North of Naha, not South as Mr. Miyagi keeps insisting.
Incorrectly regarded as goofs: While in Okinawa and Japan it is normal for the driver’s side to be on the right side of the car for left lane travel, many right hand cars to transported to the island by members of the US military for personal use and subsequently left there. This is why Soto’s personal car is right hand drive.
Errors in geography: In the plane to Japan, Mr Miyagi tells Daniel to look for Tomi Village “south of Naha, along the sea” on the map of Okinawa. Daniel mentions there is an air base (later identified as Kadena AB) there. Kadena Air Base is in fact north of Naha City.
Revealing mistakes: After Miyagi fights Chozen and his friends, he runs by a concrete statue to see if Daniel is okay. The statue moves a bit. The next scene shows Chozen kicking this statue and supposedly breaking it.
Factual errors: When the young Air Force man is giving Mr Miyagi and Daniel directions to his village in Okinawa, he asks the “Sarge” where it is. The sergeant then replies, “You are standing on it corporal.” There are no corporals in the Air Force, and his rank was actually an Airman First Class (E-3) with two stripes. The correct response from the sergeant should have been, “You are standing on it airman.”

Revealing mistakes: Player uniforms throughout the film look unrealistically grass stained, as if they’ve been intentionally distressed.
Revealing mistakes: All “road” games for T.C. Williams obviously filmed on the same field, including the State Championship game.
Continuity: During a game sequence, an opposing running back runs a sweep. He fumbles the ball which is picked up by a Titan player, who runs it in for a touchdown, the wrong way.
Anachronisms: High school football rules in 1971 did not allow a recovered fumble to be advance by the recovering team. This happens several times in crucial situations.
Anachronisms: In the early 1970s, Igloo coolers were galvanized steel, not plastic as shown.
Anachronisms: The helmets are of a late 1990s design, which are much more strongly designed and made than those actually worn in the early 1970s when this movie takes place.
Factual errors: After football camp the players return. The subtitle states the first day of school as September 4th (1971). This was a Saturday and would not be the first day of school.
Revealing mistakes: A helmet can be seen on the driver of the car when it spins after being hit.
Continuity: In stadium, the people are dressed for cold weather. Afterwards in the downtown scene they are dressed like it is a warm summer night.
Continuity: When Sunshine first comes to the team during training and throws the ball at Gary, it appears to be dropping to the right of his back and missing. But hits him in the middle of his back in the final close range shot.
Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): While at Gettysburg, Coach Boone says 50,000 men died there during the Battle of Gettysburg during the Civil War. There were approximately 50,000 casualties (killed/wounded/missing), but the actual number killed was much lower.
Crew or equipment visible: When Coach Boone goes to Coach Yost’s house to apologize for accepting the head coaching job, the cameraman is reflected in the window just before Boone knocks on the door.
Continuity: When the players are at camp eating lunch after the first practice, Blue starts humming and Rev says, “Lord, we come before you today and ask you to soften big Julius Campbell’s heart.” “Lord, we come before you today” is clearly repeated when the camera switches to Ray talking with Gerry.
Anachronisms: In the championship game, the team opposing the Titans starts using the shotgun offense. The Titans’ assistant coach recognizes the play immediately and clearly knows it’s a pro-type offense, saying, “Who do these guys think they are, the New York Jets?” However, in 1971, the shotgun formation had not been used in the NFL for over a decade (and then only by one team, the San Francisco 49ers) and was not a part of the pro playbook until Tom Landry reintroduced it with the Dallas Cowboys in 1975. If the coach had recognized the formation at all he would never have associated it with the Jets or the pros.
Anachronisms: A “CSX” railroad car appears in the background. This movie takes place in 1971 and the CSX railroad corporation was not formed until the mid 1980s.
Revealing mistakes: During the locker room scene, a tattoo on the right shoulder of the actor who plays Petey can be seen, though it has been covered with make-up to make it less visible.
Revealing mistakes: In the locker room scene where the players are talking about Gerry Bertier’s mom, you can see a covered up superman tattoo on the actor’s arm who plays Gerry.
Factual errors: T.C. Williams High School had actually been integrated since 1963. The successful 1971 football season was not credited to integration but to consolidation of two other high schools; the tripling of the class sizes gave them a larger talent pool to choose from. There was racial violence at that time in Alexandria but not over the football team; instead it was over an unrelated incident where a white convenience store clerk killed a black student in a struggle.
Anachronisms: In the opening scene the train going by has sunken well double stack trailer cars. These were not in common use until the 80’s.
Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): In the locker room when the players are singing “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”. The actor who plays Blue can be heard singing “No, No, darlin”‘ when the lyric is “Don’t worry, baby”.
Continuity: When Sunshine first comes to the practice and throws the football at Gerry you can see Alan and Blue standing behind Gerry watching the football fly through the air. But when the football hits Gerry you see Alan and Blue in front of him turning to laugh.
Factual errors: At the end of the game where Petey talks to Sunshine about how they will never be up by 50 points, the announcer makes it plain that the Titans won with a last second touchdown. The scoreboard reads 17-10, meaning they won by a touchdown and an extra point. If they scored with no time left as is implied, they would not have kicked an extra point. Therefor, the final score should have been 16-10.
Factual errors: The correct name of the Groveton team that they played in game three was the Tigers, not the Lions.
Factual errors: Bertier is shown wearing a T.C. Williams letter jacket, with letter, in the middle of the season. Letters are awarded after the season has ended. Since TCW is a new school, and this is their first season ever, no TCW letters would have yet been awarded.

Continuity: When Peter picks up Kate for their date on the porch, White tries to make a move on her and she smashes his face on the wall. White’s make-up was left behind, but the next shot it’s gone.
Continuity: When the Dodgeball Chancellor is presenting the $50,000 and the Dodgeball trophy, the confetti on his right shoulder changes with every shot.
Continuity: When White Goodman is introducing his dodgeball team in the bar for the first time, the G on his necklace switches between a backwards G and a regular G between shots.
Anachronisms: During the black & white instructional dodgeball video an American flag is displayed in the video’s background. It is a 50-starred flag and the video says copyright 1954. The American flag had 48 stars until 1959.

Continuity: Inside the Dirty Sanchez, a close-up of Peter LaFleur pointing his finger at White shows Peter gesturing with his right hand. Cut to a wide shot, and Peter is pointing with his left hand with no time to have switched hands.
Continuity: In the scene where White commits the foul by stepping over the line to send the game into “sudden death”, they show the replay. In the wide shot on the left it shows White’s right foot crossing the line but in the close up shot on the right it is his left foot.
Continuity: In the match against the Lumberjacks, when the referee asks if Average Joe’s are ready, Owen is lined up with his team mates touching the back wall as if he were about to take part in the match. Not only would this mean that Average Joes had 7 players on court, but in subsequent shots of the match taking place, you can clearly see Owen on the sidelines wearing a tracksuit top, having not taken part in the game.
Continuity: When Average Joe’s have their first game, the Qualifying match, they face Troop #417, and when the referee blows the whistle, Justin goes for the ball by sliding on his chest, and he clearly goes past the half line, but in the next scene, he is still playing, and no one has caught a ball.
Continuity: When Michelle talks to White after walking in on him with the pizza, the “G” on White’s necklace is actually sewed onto the neck of his shirt and is not on the chain around his neck.
Continuity: In the dodge ball training video, when Young Patches O’Houlihan is first introduced, he’s holding a cigarette in his left hand, in subsequent shots the cigarette disappears.
Continuity: When Kate Veach gets hit in the face with the dodge ball by White, her bangs keep changing from being tucked into her braids to being left out, between screens
Continuity: When Peter is talking to Lance Armstrong at the airport, the top on the bottle of water Lance orders is alternately on/off.
Factual errors: Kate opens Peter’s hotel room even though those doors are designed to lock once they’ve been closed. The only way she could have gotten in was if she had a key.
Continuity: When Peter is talking to Patches after their first game, a guy in an Orange shirt is seen walking past the door. A few seconds later he is seen again walking down in the same direction without being seen walking back.
Audio/visual unsynchronized: When Patches says, “I ain’t crazy, and I ain’t a guy”, his lip movements do not match up to what he is saying.
Continuity: The child who is painting the fence before he meets Patches O’Houlihan has no paint on his brush.
Continuity: In the game between the Average Joe’s and the Skillz that Killz, the film goes to the foot shot when everyone reaches for the balls. In the next frame, the players playing against Joe’s that are coming up with the balls are not Skillz that Killz, but the Lumberjacks, who were already defeated in a previous round.
Continuity: When Average Joes was facing The Lumberjacks, when they went to grab the balls, Justin took one and threw it. But when he gets hit, he has three balls in his arms.
Revealing mistakes: There are several shots of the crowd that show audience members are ‘fake clapping’ – hands are coming together with not enough force to be audible (to allow for the audio of the main characters). One of the most noticeable examples is following the scene where White hits Kate in the face with the dodge ball.
Audio/visual unsynchronized: In the scene where the team requests an overturn of the chancellor’s decision for forfeiture, the crowd begins to chant “Let them play!” The audio doesn’t match the hand gestures nor their mouth movements.
Revealing mistakes: When Peter throws cans of beverage to everyone after the impromptu car wash, there are sounds of an empty beverage can. A full beverage can actually sounds dull.
Incorrectly regarded as goofs: When the members of Average Joe’s are trying to come up with a way to raise the $50,000 the sign on the wall behinds them reads “If your under 18…” This should be “If YOU’RE under 18…” However, this was put in intentionally by the creators. It is mentioned in the commentary.
Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): Prior to Sudden Death, the referee states that both feet must remain “in the triangle at all times”. When Peter kneels and throws the ball, his left foot is outside the triangle.
Audio/visual unsynchronized: After the German team loses in the first round, David Hasselhoff goes to their bench and throws down his picture. You can see that there is no glass in the frame when he is holding it but you hear glass break when the frame hits the floor.
Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): In the opening scene we see a picture of White with the caption “White Goodman 1987″, and he says “That’s me, six years and 600 pounds ago,” as if it’s now 1993. But that can’t be: the first line of the commentary from the dodgeball tournament says that ESPN8 (“The Ocho”) has been bringing viewers obscure sports “since 1999,” and Mona Lisa Smile (2003) and Lance Armstrong’s Tour de France wins are mentioned in other scenes.
Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): While the Average Joes are playing White Goodman’s team, the ref calls White on a line violation, while a few scenes before, White is entirely over the line and no foul is called.

Continuity: SPOILER: When Mason Dixon is announced as the winner, you can see Rocky’s trainer, Duke, in the left lower corner of the ring. Rocky has already hugged Duke as he has headed into the tunnel.
Audio/visual unsynchronized: When Rocky, Jr.’s boss meets Rocky, his mouth doesn’t match what he’s saying in one shot.
Continuity: Right before the main event, the channel that is presenting the fight between Balboa and Dixon throws up some stats for the two fighters on the screen. The headshot they use for Rocky is taken from the upcoming fight that Rocky has not yet fought in.
Revealing mistakes: In the montage for Mason before the fight, you can see “Tarver” on his trunks in at least one of the clips. Antonio Tarver is the name of the boxer who played Mason.
Crew or equipment visible: The shadow of a microphone is visible on Rocky’s red T-shirt when goes outside from restaurant talk to Rocky Jr.
Continuity: At the end of round two, when the bell rings, Rocky’s trainer Duke jumps through the ropes and falls into the ring. The towel on his shoulder hangs on the ropes. The next scene showing Rocky in his corner has Duke going through the ropes again with the towel still on his shoulder.
Continuity: When Rocky gives little Marie a ride home, it shows him getting in the van and the van automatically starts, his hand never goes to the ignition to put the key in. Then when he gets out to go talk to the drunk, it shows him turning van off.
Miscellaneous: Paulie and Rocky watch a story about the ‘computer fight’ at Rocky’s restaurant. The show is ESPN’s ‘COLD PIZZA’, a morning show. Yet the scene takes place at night, when the show wouldn’t be on.
Continuity: When Rocky and Marie was walking toward the van from the bar, the van is parked about a quarter of a block away from the bar. After Rocky come back from confronting with the drunk, the van is parked on the corner and blocking the crosswalk.
Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): At the conclusion, in the first round of the main event, the announcer states Rocky lands 9 of 13 punches, but he clearly throws more, roughly 30 punches thrown and he lands roughly 25.
Continuity: When Rocky is talking to Paulie in the restaurant about the simulated fight, the bottle on the bar changes from one with a black label on the neck, to one with a blue label on the neck, back to black, then back to blue.
Plot holes: When Rocky Fights Dixon it shows his record as 57-23-1. He was 44-20 going into his first match with Apollo. He lost to Apollo, then beat him, then had 10 title defense victories. His record at that point was 55-21. After splitting with Clubber Lang he was 56-22. One more fight against Drago makes 57-22. The draw could have been the fight with Thunderlips in Rocky III, but where did the additional defeat come from?
Incorrectly regarded as goofs: When Rocky applied for a boxing license in Rocky V (1990), he was denied, as the doctors stated he had irreversible brain damage. In this movie, according to the licensing board, Rocky passed all of his medical exams with “flying colors.” They cannot both be correct at the same time. However, Sylvester Stallone has addressed this in interviews, stating that the standards of acceptable health for boxing could have changed over time – and Rocky IS completely fit by modern standards. Additionally, he never got a second opinion and yielded to Adrian’s advice to quit to protect his health.
Incorrectly regarded as goofs: During the scene when Steps is looking over Rocky’s collection of championships and photos, it has title belts on the wall that Rocky never actually won in his career. However, 16 years have passed between Rocky V (1990) and this film (in which we don’t see the events), and it is entirely possible that, in the time between films, Rocky managed additional fighters and THEY won the awards in question.
Continuity: In the fight between Rocky Balboa and Mason “The Line” Dixon, the bleeding cut under Rocky Balboa’s right eye disappears and reappears several times.
Continuity: While Rocky goes out to the alley to talk with Paulie, his polo collar is folded up against the jacket. When he re-enters the restaurant, his collar is back down, even before he adjusts the coat.
Continuity: A gold chain around Marie’s neck appears and disappears several times during a long exchange between herself and Rocky outside of her row house.

Continuity: The number “2″ disappears off Rocky’s apartment door after he answers the door to let Micky in.
Continuity: During the fight with Apollo Creed, the top of Rocky’s shorts are flipped inside-out in one shot. In the next,they are fixed.
Continuity: When Rocky enters the bathroom while Mickey is visiting him, three darts are on the door. After Rocky opens the door the first time, the darts are in a completely different pattern. In the final shot, the door has 2 darts.
Continuity: During the big fight, the arena is clearly empty at times. This is because only 50 extras could be afforded for the scenes, and despite cinematographer James Crabe’s best efforts to hide this fact, occasional, if one looks hard enough, one can see most of the arena is empty.
Crew or equipment visible: During the fight, Steadicam operator Garrett Brown and his assistant are visible at ringside several times in the wide shots. Brown can clearly be seen wearing a black and white stripped top.
Continuity: When Rocky sees Marie and asks her if her brother knew she was hanging out with those “coconuts”, he’s smoking a cigarette. When he grabs her, the cigarette disappears.
Crew or equipment visible: In the Morning Run scene, the camera zooms out as Rocky runs down the street. The lighting equipment is visible at the top of the screen, right above the farthest building.
Continuity: At the end of the fight, when Apollo and Rocky are hugging, Apollo’s manager comes up to him in the close-up shot. Then they switch to an aerial shot, and Apollo’s manager jumps over the ropes into the ring.
Crew or equipment visible: When Rocky is talking to Adrian on Thanksgiving through the door, the camera shot goes to Paulie who is about ten feet away. You can see one of the movie cameras in the mirror.
Miscellaneous: Rocky fights Apollo at the Spectrum Stadium in Philadelphia. As Adrian comes out to watch the fight, a Los Angeles police officer is standing behind her in the corridor.
Miscellaneous: The closing credits list real-life boxing referee Lou Fillipo, who plays the referee in the Championship fight, as “Championship Fight Announcer”. Thayer David, who plays the promoter Jergens, was the fight announcer.
Revealing mistakes: After the announcer finishes announcing the beginning of the fight, the microphone rises back up to the ceiling. As it rises, it hits the camera and shakes it.
Anachronisms: About a half hour into the film, Rocky is looking at pictures and clippings on the wall, and there is the sound of a steam locomotive coming up to speed, along with the sound of its steam whistle. Diesels had long since supplanted steam in Philadelphia and most of the country in 1956.
Factual errors: Rocky was called “the Italian Stallion”, and was member of an Italian-American family, but Balboa is a Spanish surname totally unusual in Italy.
Continuity: Rocky (who is supposed to be left handed) uses right hand to write down info on collections he is supposed to make in two scenes and to turn dial on combination lock at beginning of movie.
Factual errors: Jergens describes Apollo’s upcoming fight as his “bicentennial fight.” In the same scene, Apollo says that it will take place “on this country’s birthday,” meaning July 4, 1976. But the fight with Rocky takes place on New Year’s Day, January 1, 1976.

Continuity: During the pre-match lead-up between Drago and Apollo, Apollo’s gloves disappear momentarily.
Continuity: In the Creed/Drago match, Rocky picks up the towel and holds it high in his left hand, cocked ready to throw. As the scene switches between the close-up on Rocky and Drago punching Creed, you can clearly see Rocky in the background in his white “BOSS” sweatshirt casually holding the towel at his side, away from the corner. The shot goes back to Rocky at the corner with the towel high and then back to the fighters. Rocky is again seen in the background with the towel low by his side away from the corner.
Continuity: During the first round of Rocky’s fight with Drago, there are several shots of Paulie and Duke with blood on their shirts, when Rocky has neither been back to his corner, nor is he yet bleeding.
Factual errors: SPOILER: During the Apollo – Ivan fight, the fatal punch given to Apollo is a left hand hook,and in the close up the punch comes from the right.
Continuity: Bloodstain on Rocky’s shorts during bout with Drago.
Continuity: When Apollo is in his pool throwing balls to the dogs, he throws all the balls in his hand, then when it cuts to a different angle, all the balls are back in his hand
Revealing mistakes: In the 15th round when Rocky is just dodging Drago’s punches. Rocky moves back to avoid a punch but slips. Drago actually sticks his arm out to make sure he doesn’t fall.
Continuity: Before the bell rings to start the Creed-Drago match, Apollo’s hand tape is gone when he points at Ivan.
Factual errors: Drago’s Soviet Army uniform has the wrong rank insignia for a Captain.
Plot holes: Rocky somehow ends up with an incredible tan when he fights Drago, despite having spent months training, completely covered up, in the snow.
Continuity: As Drago lifts the big barbell over his head, there are fewer plates on the bar in the close-ups than in the long shots.
Revealing mistakes: During the final fight, several shots show a wall perhaps ten rows away from the ring, revealing how small the room was that the fight was shot in.
Continuity: Before the fight with Creed and Drago, just after the James Brown dance sequence, Creed points at Drago without gloves on, telling him he is going down. Then in the next shot, Creed has his boxing gloves on.
Continuity: When Rocky is driving and thinking about Drago, there is a flashback to the Drago/Apollo fight, but one of the shots of Drago is actually taken from the upcoming Rocky/Drago fight, because the trunks are the wrong color and Drago is bleeding
Audio/visual unsynchronized: At Paulie’s birthday party, he makes a comment to the robot. His mouth is shut before he is done “talking”.
Continuity: When Apollo falls forward after being knocked out by Drago, his arms are alternately at his sides/above his head between shots.
Continuity: In a brief scene, while Rocky is training for the big fight with Drago, Rocky is punching the punch mitts that Tony Duke is holding in the air. In one shot, Rocky is punching the punch mitts with black boxing gloves, and in the very next shot, Rocky is punching the punch mitts with white tape, no gloves.
Continuity: Pauly complains that he will miss the Rose Bowl game due the accommodations he has in Russia. The fight takes place on December 25. The Rose Bowl game is traditionally played on January 1, so Pauly would be back in America by the time the Rose Bowl takes place.
Revealing mistakes: After the Creed/Drago match, when there is a montage of newspaper clippings about Rocky deciding to fight Drago, the first clipping if you look closely at the article and read it… you’ll notice that the article isn’t even about Rocky, but that it is actually about the world series.
Errors in geography: Throughout Rocky’s training in the wilds of the USSR he is frequently filmed with the Tetons and the Grand Teton in particular in the background. Only notable because of how identifiable and unique the Teton range is.
Revealing mistakes: When Apollo announces his intention to fight Drago before the press, a montage of newspaper clippings is shown just before this. The print of one of the articles, with photos of both Apollo and Drago, doesn’t report the upcoming fight at all but instead is about union-employer negotiations at the Chrysler company.
Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): At the end of the Drago/Rocky Bout… Rocky gives a speech where he says, “Today there are 2 people killing each other but I guess it’s better than 20 Million people”. The Russian translator however translates this as “It’s better than 20 Million Dollars”.
Crew or equipment visible: During the montage, whilst Rocky is driving around reminiscing about the past, there is a clip of Rocky and Apollo jogging in front of a mirror. At the bottom of the mirror you can see a small camera light moving back and forth.
Crew or equipment visible: The production’s actual camera crew (cameramen and grips) can be seen in several shots during the climactic match between Rocky and Drago.
Factual errors: When Drago is training, one of his punches registers 2150 psi. If Rocky was punched in the head this hard, he would die instantly.
Continuity: When Drago is training, the Thermo-graphic computer monitor repeatedly plays the same clip of him throwing a punch over and over, even when Drago is not throwing a punch.
Continuity: During the end of the 14th round, it can be clearly seen that Drago has thrown Rocky and is punching him in Rocky’s corner. When the bell goes and the respective teams storm into the ring to split them up, it can be clearly seen that they are now in Dragos corner, with the red ring post behind them as opposed from the white.
Continuity: The boxing gloves that Apollo wears during his entrance are smaller than the gloves he wears during the actual fight.
Revealing mistakes: Licence plates on both KGB cars in Krasnogubernsk are not corresponding to the region where they suppose to be registered. (The first letter on one license plate doesn’t exist in Russian alphabet.)

Continuity: Ali sits down twice when Malcolm visits him in his hotel room.
Anachronisms: When Ali and Liston are getting weighed, one of the people takes a photo using a Canon EOS, a camera not made in the ’70s
Anachronisms: When Ali is jogging in the very first scene, there’s an ‘87 Taurus in the background, and a ’90s vintage car in the carport.
Anachronisms: In scenes from the 1960s, Howard Cosell is depicted wearing a hairpiece. Cosell didn’t start wearing a hairpiece until the early ’70s, prior to which he slicked back his receding hairline.
Factual errors: Chauncey Eskridge was not at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis standing directly under Martin Luther King Jr. at the moment of King’s April 4, 1968 assassination (the director knew this).
Anachronisms: In the fight with Sonny Liston, the ring had three ropes not four as depicted in the film. Boxing rings didn’t have four ropes until the mid-1970s. The ring had four ropes.
Continuity: When the FBI is setting up the wiretaps, the cigarette and ashes jump around in the ashtray between shots.
Anachronisms: Ali exchanges winks with a ring card girl in the George Foreman fight. According to boxing historian Bert Sugar, ring cards girls were not in existence until the late 1970s at Caesar’s Palace.
Anachronisms: There’s a scene where Ali is standing on a city street with a Sears department store in the background. The logo is current as opposed to that used in the ’60s and ’70s.
Factual errors: In the last fight of the film, Ali always sits down between each round. In reality, he never sat down in this fight.
Continuity: In the scene where Ali, Bingham, and Belinda are watch the Frazier-Ellis fight, the fight is in black and white in one shot and color in a later shot when Frazier wins.
Incorrectly regarded as goofs: In the early ’60s section of the film Clay refers to a member of the Beatles (‘John Lennon’ we presume) as “the one with the glasses”. Lennon seldom wore his glasses in public (though there are a few studio photos), and was certainly not famous for them, until 1967. It is possible however that Lennon would have been wearing his thick-rimmed black glasses when the Beatles met Clay during their first visit to the U.S. in February 1964, then removed them for the publicity shots taken during that visit.
Factual errors: The argument Ali and his wife Sonji have over Ali’s seeing Veronica Porche did not happen before the Ali/Foreman fight, but instead happened before the 3rd Ali/Frazier fight, “The Thrilla in in Manila”, in 1975.
Factual errors: The officer at the induction center wears the belt of an Army officer (black), indicating that he is an Army captain, yet he wears his rank like a Naval or Coast Guard lieutenant (with the bars’ center line bisecting the collar angle, and lacking branch insignia on his left collar).
Anachronisms: When Ali starts to run in the streets of Kinshasa, we see a kid with a modern-style microscooter.
Continuity: When Cassius Clay is introduced to Nation of Islam founder, Elijah Mohammed, to be given the new name – Mohammed Ali – the Revox tape recorder on the table disappears between shots.
Anachronisms: Some of the Nikon cameras used by the press are modern, not 1970s, models.
