“Mr. Brooks” Goofs List

• Continuity: Before Detective Atwood ever sees any action, her knuckles are scraped and bruised from fighting.
• Crew or equipment visible: When Mr. Brooks is talking to Jane in his office, you can see the camera man’s arm in the window reflection behind Mr. Brooks’ desk.
• Continuity: After the Man of the Year ceremony, Mrs. Brooks takes the ring on her right ring finger off and puts it into her jewelery box, when the camera changes angles, she is seen taking the same ring off again.
• Incorrectly regarded as goofs: The movie is supposed to be set in Oregon, however the license plates on the cars let you know that it can’t possibly be Oregon. Oregon license plates have three letters and then three numbers or vice versa. Not two letters and then a number with two numbers and a letter for the second half of the plate. This, however, is a common device in filmmaking, as film producers do not wish to actual registrations. Films shot in New York and Washington almost always feature cars whose license plates fail to conform to registration patterns.
• Revealing mistakes: When Detective Tracey Atwood’s head is stitched it is a visibly huge and nasty head wound which would normally need some bandaging in addition to the stitches. However, in subsequent scenes there are no bandages visible nor is her hair shaved.
• Continuity: As Earl is getting out of a taxi, he walks with a cane held with his right hand for a short distance. When he reaches his car, he hooks the cane over his left arm. In the next shot, he’s holding the cane in his left hand by its shaft.
• Continuity: When Mr. Brooks kills the first couple, the lamp inside the room is turned on. However, after he kills the couple, the room is dark and the lamp is off. The lamp later appears turned on in the photograph. The reflection of the lamp which appears turned off can also be seen right after the couple gets killed.
• Continuity: When Earl drives the jeep to Jane’s school, you can see the Axe in the car and near it you can see the gear handle is set on PARKING. As the camera goes up, you can clearly see the car is moving and Earl is driving it.
• Continuity: During the car chase after the abduction of Atwood, the white van contacts a number of other vehicles causing significant damage to the van. At the end of this sequence the van is seen escaping but without any obvious sign of damage to the van.
• Continuity: When Det. Atwood is taken into the van, the van turns into an alley with the sliding door open. Turning into the next street from the alley, the door is closed. The next shot with the van driving along the street shows the door open again.
• Errors in geography: CVS pharmacy signs are visible at various times throughout the movie (most commonly during car rides), like when Mr. Brooks picks up Mr. Smith for the last time. CVS Pharmacies are not present in Portland, where the story is said to take place but are prevalent in L.A. where filming for many movies occurs. They are also common in Louisiana, where much of this film was shot.
• Errors in geography: While driving after the awards banquet, a Chase bank sign is clearly seen out the window. Chase has no locations in Portland; they do however, have locations in Louisiana, where the movie was mostly filmed. Same with Morgan Keegan when Marshal and Earl are coming over the bridge, on the way to the dance students’ home.
• Errors in geography: There is a scene where signs for US highways 79 and 80 are prominently shown. Neither highway is anywhere near Portland, Oregon. (Coincidentally, Portland did at one time contain a segment of Interstate 80N, but it is doubtful that the filmmakers planned this to cover the goof; Interstate 80N was in no way related to US highway 80, and it was re-designated as Interstate 84 many years ago). Both US Route 79 and 80 both run through Louisiana, where most of this movie was filmed.
• Continuity: When Mr Brooks is driving Mr Smith around for the first time, it is raining heavily, yet when they drive past a new car dealership, none of the cars are wet and the coin op car wash across the street is full of people washing their cars.
• Continuity: On the way to the cemetery when Mr. Smith pulls his gun on Mr. Brooks the hammer is pulled back. During their conversation Mr. Smith pulls the already cocked hammer back again.
• Factual errors: When Mr. Brooks is reading the paper, the first page contains the story of Meeks’s murder-suicide. In the upper section, there is a note about DNA showing Mr. Smith to be the Thumbprint Killer. DNA would take a week to process at very minimum (more likely six to eight weeks), at which point Meeks’ story would no longer be breaking news as it is portrayed.
• Revealing mistakes: Mr. Brooks’ glasses are made of glass and aren’t prescription lenses. You can see this in two scenes in particular: the scene in the beginning where Mr. Brooks and his wife go out for ice cream and the scene where Mr. Brooks is burning the pictures. Also, it is unlikely that this could have been intended by the filmmakers because Mr. Brooks’ daughter puts them at least once when she is in his office.
• Continuity: In the scene where the murder victim swings out of the ceiling and hits Demi Moore in the face, blood is streaming out of her broken nose. In subsequent shots, the blood has completely disappeared and she is not bleeding at all.
• Revealing mistakes: SPOILER: When Detective Tracy Atwood is abducted, the van she is in is seen at times with the side door open and then closed as she struggles to free herself.
• Revealing mistakes: SPOILER: When Meeks shoots himself in the head, a spray of blood appears on the wall behind him. In the next shot the blood is gone.
• Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): SPOILER: When Mr. Brooks and Mr. Smith first go into the cemetery, Mr. Brooks hands Mr. Smith the keys so he can get back out. However, after Mr. Brooks kills Mr. Smith, he does not retrieve the keys before rolling Mr. Smith into the grave.

• Continuity: The football players carrying Dan Marino off the commercial shoot swap positions.
• Continuity: Einhorn and Ace switch positions near the end of the murder scene.
• Continuity: In the end scene at the football match when Melissa and Ace start kissing their backs are to the audience in the football stands and Melissa is on Ace’s right side. In the next shot she is to the left of him and they are now facing the audience in the stands and then in the next shot she is back on the right side. But there was definitely not enough time to change to these positions.
• Continuity: When the dog lays down on the picture of Ray Finkel, making it look like Ray had long hair, the “hair” was down past his shoulder. In the close-up, it is by his chin.
• Continuity: The condition of the box that Ace rips after he steps on the bubble wrap, and the subsequent position of the bubble wrap.
• Continuity: Before Snowflake’s kidnapper puts his (her?) hand in the pool, the 1984 AFC Championship Ring is on the middle finger; afterward it’s on the ring finger.
• Continuity: When Mr. Shickadance inspects Ace’s apartment for animals, the doggy door on the fridge is a solid sheet of plastic, but when Ace calls his animals out afterward, the penguins exit through the doggy door which is clearly segmented.
• Continuity: The stain on Rodger Podactor’s shirt changes from when he initially meets Ace to when he walks over to the dolphin tank.
• Continuity: Ace’s hand gets dirty when he is looking through the tank’s filter and turns spotless when it shows the diamond in his hand.
• Continuity: When Ace enters the outside door near the pool at Ronald Camp’s home, a large plant can clearly been seen in the hallway opposite the doorway. When he slams the door, the plant is gone.
• Factual errors: When Woodstock says he is sending new coordinates to the Norwegian whaling fleet, the blips on the radar screen move even when the beam is not sweeping over them.
• Continuity: After Snowflake is captured, Melissa asks “Why did it have to happen now, two weeks before the Superbowl?” In a following scene with Ace, Melissa tells him that it’s Superbowl week, and the dolphin was stolen “last night”.
• Factual errors: The band Cannibal Corpse is falsely credited as “Canibal Corpses” in the end credits.
• Errors in geography: In the movie, the Miami City Police officers are wearing Miami-Dade Police Patches. The real-life Miami City Police patches are circular and feature a palm tree in the center.
• Factual errors: The film mentions the 1985 Super Bowl as “Super Bowl XVII (17)” It was not. It was Super Bowl XIX (19). Super Bowl 17 was held on 30 January 1983. (This might stem from the fact that the 1969 Super Bowl between the Colts and the Jets was the first to actually be referred to as the “Super Bowl” . The previous two Super Bowls were actually called The AFL-NFL World Championship Game.)
• Factual errors: Both Miami Dolphin team pictures that Ace references throughout the movie are said to be from the 1984 season. Both of these team photos were taken at Joe Robbie Stadium…but in reality, Joe Robbie Stadium wasn’t built yet! The Dolphins were still located at The Orange Bowl in 1984.
• Continuity: When we first see Finkle’s room, it’s an inside shot and it’s completely dark. But when we see the rest of the room, there is a “shrine” to Marino, with candles already lit.
• Continuity: When Ace is fighting with Einhorn/Finkle at the end of the film, she is clearly wearing pantyhose. A short time later, when Ace removes her skirt, she is not wearing pantyhose.
• Factual errors: Ray Finkle is said to have played football for Stetson University and graduated in 1980. In fact, Stetson University has not fielded a football team since 1960.
• Continuity: While in Melissa’s backyard, Ace at one point spits out a lemon wedge from a glass of iced tea; when he gets up from his chair, the lemon is back on the glass.
• Miscellaneous: There are several spelling errors in the newspaper articles Ventura and Melissa view on microfilm, including “origionally”, “Finkle”‘ with an apostrophe instead of a comma, “stiil”, “itys” (its), “disasterous”, and “Champioship”. The articles also use the same filler material (usually when it’s near the edge of the screen): a football-related paragraph once the relevant information is done, and occasionally completely unrelated copy that seems to have come from another article.
• Continuity: After Ace rescues the lost Shih Tzu, his car windows are smashed. In the scene after as he takes the dog/cat food to his apartment, the windows are no longer smashed. When he arrives at the Miami Dolphin’s stadium, his windows are messed up again.
• Continuity: At the end during the “Super Bowl” once Ace brings Dan to the game. After kissing Melissa, Ace looks over at the water coolers to see the pigeon up for the big reward. In the background of that shot you see a couple ushers including a bearded one. The next shot is back on Ace and Melissa and now the bearded usher is standing behind them.
• Continuity: When Ace enters the storage room of the asylum and searches through Ray Finkle’s box of belongings he picks up 2 knitted doilies that say “Die Dan” on them with the diamond shaped one being in his left hand and the octagonal one being in his right. In the very next shot they are reversed
• Continuity: When Mr. Shickadance confronts Ace about the rent, Ace hands him a sheet of paper. During the closeup shot of the paper, Ace’s shirt has changed.
• Continuity: In the film that runs in Ray’s room showing the missed field goal, the ball sails wide right (looking from behind the goal posts). When the camera cuts to the shot of the referee in the end zone, he gestures with his hands that the ball went wide left.
• Continuity: When Ace is about to kick the package down the hall to the man’s doorstep at the beginning of the movie, he throws the package up with his feet and lands flat, but on the scene he kicks it, it’s in a vertical position.
• Continuity: When Ace is breaking into the Private Room in the Asylum, he picks the lock with the ‘Private’ door tag. Once he is inside and the cleaner opens the door it appears to be unlocked.
• Factual errors: Ace refers to Super XXVII (17) as the game that Finkle blew by Marino having the laces out. The Dolphins did lose Super Bowl 17, but it was one year before Marino’s rookie season in the NFL. Dan Marino only played in Super Bowl 19 with the Dolphins.
• Anachronisms: The file photo of Ray Finkle has an NFL patch on the collar. That was added to uniforms many years after 1984 when it was supposed to have been taken.
• Continuity: When the penguins come out of the freezer, the clear flap has been cut into strips, but when it is shown again, it is solid.
• Factual errors: Ace claims Finkle graduated from Stetson University, holding 2 Division 1 records. Stetson is not a Division 1 football school.
• Plot holes: At the end after Ace has ripped off Einhorn’s skirt, Dan Marino is the one who points out what’s obviously in the back of her underwear. However, the numerous police officers who are also directly behind Einhorn act as though they see nothing.
• Revealing mistakes: When Ace is in the mental hospital acting as Larry, he suddenly stops to do his half-time dance and then slams his head and face into the bench in the hallway. When he does this, you can see the doctor break character and start laughing.
• Revealing mistakes: When Ace breaks into the storage room using the Private sign the type of jamb indicates it is an out-swing door yet the door swings in. You can see the jamb is in the way and the lock cannot be picked in the manner he did that in the shots before and after the close up of him breaking in.
• Factual errors: When looking for the fish to feed Snowflake, the thug says “Where’ the hell’s the smelt?” In the next scene where the second thug follows the trail of fish to the now-unconscious first thug, the fish are larger than smelt, most likely tilapias.
• Revealing mistakes: As Ace Ventura drives down the freeway to take Dan Marino to the Super Bowl the football stadium is in the background, but there are no cars in the stadium parking lot.
• Revealing mistakes: Position of the stuffed dog relative to the door – it is impossible for Ace to have placed the fake dog in the position it is shown due to the direction the door opens in.
• Audio/visual unsynchronized: At the end of the scene where Snowflake is kidnapped, the get-a-way van squeals/spins its tires with a sound as if the van was on concrete. There is only grass

• Revealing mistakes: SPOILER: When Gus is shot through the eye, the bullet goes through his left eye and has a pattern of blood running down his face, yet later on throughout the movie, when Xavier sees the number on the back of Gus’s neck, we see Gus’s eye is perfectly normal with no blood marks, or bullet wounds.
• Continuity: When they discover Obi’s envelope, the knife’s position on the envelope shifts between shots.
• Continuity: The wounds on Amanda that were inflicted by needles in the pit that she was thrown into by Xavier disappear and reappear throughout the rest of the film.
• Continuity: When Detective Eric Mathews meets John his badge is normal. A few moments into the scene it becomes twisted and when it cuts to John then back to Eric after a second the badge is normal.
• Factual errors: A swat member uses a battering ram to open the outside door of the facility, but it is a door that opens outwards.
• Continuity: The pool of blood from Gus’s gunshot wound changes when Daniel goes to put the coat over his head.
• Continuity: When the Tech Team arrives you can see the clock as the detective is destroying Jigsaws work saying 8:00. It had been seen earlier in the movie saying it was almost 8:30.
• Continuity: When the SWAT team have their guns aimed at Jigsaw’s heart (just after Matthews says “Hey – is this close enough?”, we can see three laser guides on his chest. Then one of the SWAT team members points his gun down, but there are still three laser guides on Jigsaw’s heart. Seconds later there are two lasers, then three again.
• Continuity: When Xavier opens the door to the Syringe Pit, it shows a very short clip showing the timer on the door for the antidote. If you slow the clip down, you will see that the timer shows ‘4:00′, in the next scene it shows ‘2:58′.
• Audio/visual unsynchronized: In the needle room, when Addison screams and says “Stop this shit!”, her lips are saying “Fuck this shit!”
• Revealing mistakes: Det. Mathews throws Jigsaw on the floor and you can tell it’s a dummy by his stick-thin right leg.
• Continuity: The first time we see the number 9 on Addison’s neck, it has a curvy line, looking like an upside down 6. Later, when there are flashes of the previous numbers, the 9 shows up with a straight line.
• Continuity: Gus’ tie changes from being sloppily pulled to the right in select shots as they wake up and then being straight in other shots.
• Continuity: When Matthews’ friend, Michael, is watching the puppet explain his situation on TV at the beginning of the movie, the channel indicator on the television keeps changing from displaying channel 3 in one shot to being covered up with duct tape in the next.
• Crew or equipment visible: As the police first arrive at the warehouse, several crew-members’ reflections can be seen in the sides of the police vans.
• Continuity: Rigg’s earpiece disappears between shots.

• Anachronisms: A 1940s radio jingle for Pepsi-Cola can be heard in the background during a daylight porch scene which, based on the film’s chronology, should take place in the mid 1920s.
• Incorrectly regarded as goofs: As Benjamin watches Daisy in the ballet, he says via narration he’d never seen New York before that. Earlier in the film as he describes his tugboat route, the Statue of Liberty can clearly be seen in the background. However, this indicates he only saw New York in passing.
• Anachronisms: In the scene where Benjamin has been alive for 17 years (making the date 1935) he walks out onto the street pursued by young Daisy. A modern day fire hydrant (with the anti-turn valve on top) can be seen on the street.
• Continuity: When Benjamin first makes tea for the channel swimmer in the glass mugs, the level of liquid fluctuates with each camera shot.
• Anachronisms: In the wharf scene when Benjamin joins the tugboat crew, two bridges are visible in the background. This event is prior to World War II. The first of these bridges was constructed beginning in 1954 and opened in 1958. The second was begun in 1981 and opened in 1988. Neither was there prior to World War II.
• Continuity: When Benjamin first sees Daisy he comments on how blue her eyes are but when they age Daisy the young actress doesn’t have blue eyes. They eventually revert to being blue when Cate Blanchett plays Daisy.
• Factual errors: Oti is referred to as a pygmy and refers to madjembe (a pygmy word for intestinal worms) which places him as a native of The Congo or Central African Republic. However, he tells Benjamin that his country has been divided by the English and Dutch. The Congo and Central African Republic were only colonized by Belgium while the English and Dutch colonized South Africa.
• Factual errors: Oti is described as a pygmy but the newspaper article refers to him as a Bushman; However, this could just reflect the ignorance of the newspaper editor
• Anachronisms: The film seems to ignore the prohibition of alcohol from 1920-1932. It was only after prohibition that bourbon was widely available; prior to giving world-wide distribution of rye whiskey to Canada, when whiskey cocktails were made it was normally with the rye whiskey made by US distilleries. The original “Sazerac” was created in New Orleans in 1859 and named by John Stiller who owned the Sazerac Coffee House.
• Crew or equipment visible: The reflection of camera and crew in a red car as the camera follows Dasiy as she walks out and down the street of the old peoples home.
• Anachronisms: In the scene where the analog clock is being taken down and replaced by a digital one, an ad for the U.S. Army National Guard is shown bearing the “Citizen/Soldier” advertisement. However, this ad was introduced in late 2007, which was a couple years after the end of the film, 2005.
• Factual errors: Soldiers in the First World War would not be issued their weapons until they arrived near the front. They certainly wouldn’t carry them when saying goodbye to their family when boarding the train to embarkation.
• Incorrectly regarded as goofs: The characters of Benjamin and Daisy both have blue eyes (a recessive trait), yet they have a daughter with brown eyes (a dominant trait). Biology tells you that two people with a recessive trait can have a child with a dominant trait when multiple alleles are involved.
• Continuity: A maroon 1963 Pontiac Starchief appears outside the dance studio shortly after it opens. It later passes Benjamin and Daisy while they ride the streetcar. It is seen once more passing by on the street as they celebrate Caroline’s 1st birthday (in 1969).
• Errors in geography: When Daisy and Benjamin reunite and take off for the Florida Keys, the pictures include beach scenes with mountains in the background. There are no mountains in the Florida Keys.
• Anachronisms: During the sequence after Benjamin leaves Daisy and their young daughter and travels through India, Benjamin is shown in front of a building which prominently features the phrase “ISO 9002″. Based on the time sequence of the movie, this would be in the very late 1970s or perhaps 1980. ISO 9002 is among the internationally-recognized quality management certifications that were first introduced in 1987.
• Continuity: During the scenes in the hospital room, the reading on the IV pump connected to Daisy is always 968 mL.
• Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): Daisy (and to some extent, also Benjamin) speaks in fairly prominent Coastal Southern American accent. She would have sounded a bit out of place (and a bit refined) for 20th century New Orleans.
• Factual errors: Benjamin spends a few idyllic weeks in Murmansk in December 1941 (there he hears the news about Pearl Harbor). But in June 1941 Russia was invaded by Germany. As one of the main bases of the Soviet navy, Murmansk was constantly under ferocious attacks, up until October 1944. So in no way could it be as peaceful and quiet there as we see in the movie.
• Anachronisms: Russian soldiers that we see in the Murmansk bar, where Captain Mike tells about fly-birds, are wearing an impossible uniform: mixture of tsarist, pre-1917 era and of the Soviet uniform created in 1943. In 1941, when the action takes place, Soviet soldiers hadn’t yet shoulder boards.
• Anachronisms: Benjamin is sailing his father’s sailboat on Lake Pontchartrain about 1962. It is a classic wooden vessel correct for the time period but has been outfitted with modern Harken brand ball bearing blocks (pulleys) that hadn’t been invented yet. Harken blocks were introduced in 1968 for small racing dinghies. The type needed for a keel boat of that size weren’t marketed until the early 70s.
• Factual errors: Benjamin is in Murmansk in late November/early December based on the radio report of the attack on Pearl Harbor. However, he sits with Elizabeth Abbott (Tilda Swinton) until dawn. Murmansk, presently the largest city above the Arctic Circle, would be in polar nights with 24 hours of darkness at that time of the year. There would be no sunshine. The same for when the tugboat crew left shortly after the 7th with sunlight streaming in the windows.
• Continuity: When Captain Mike was shot in his boat, he falls down on right side, maneuvering boat to the right, but boat maneuvers to left as it starts approaching submarine.
• Factual errors: During WW2, German U-boats had their white painted numbers from the conning tower removed, whereas in the film you can quite clearly see the number “497″ on the side of the conning tower.
• Continuity: The room where Benjamin and Elizabeth Abbott made love in, its door was opened from the left. But later when Benjamin enter the room and got the letter, the door was opened from the right.
• Revealing mistakes: The backwards clock has a smoothly sweeping second hand, indicating it is motor-driven. But it’s an escapement mechanism; when it’s shown in storage after being taken down, you can hear the ticking.
• Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): When talking about how the tugboat has been commissioned into the US Navy the day right after Pearl Harbor (Dec 8, 1941), the captain says “We will fight the Japs and the Hun”. The Hun refers to the Germans, but they didn’t declare war on the US until Dec 11, 1941.
• Anachronisms: Benjamin narrates that he goes home in 1945, yet he is wearing glasses from the brand Ray-Ban that were not yet made until 1952, originally as an aviator sunglass.
• Anachronisms: In 1945, Benjamin goes to dinner with Daisy, and the man who lights her cigarette uses a slim Zippo, which weren’t in production until around the early-mid 50s.
• Errors in geography: As Benjamin and Daisy are (according to the narration) sailing in the Florida Keys there is a quick shot of a rocket ascending. However, the NASA launch facility is in Cape Canaveral on the Atlantic coast of Florida – hundreds of miles northeast of the Keys.
• Anachronisms: Benjamin is seen tinkering with an Enfield Bullet motorcycle. But it contains a “Black letter on White” number-plate. “Black on White” were introduced for private vehicles only by 2000. Earlier “Black on White” plates were for taxis; private vehicles had “White on black” plates.
• Continuity: When Thomas Button puts newborn Benjamin on the steps of the nursing home he leaves some bills of cash inside the baby blanket, but in the next scene when Queenie pulls back the blanket the money has disappeared. Since the cash was placed inside the fold of the blanket where Benjamin’s face is, the bills should have been clearly visible or at least have dropped out of the blanket when Queenie exposes the baby’s face.
