“Australia” Goofs List

Continuity: At the end, when King George is waiting for Nullah to come on walkabout, the position of the spear he is holding changes angles several times – from straight up to 45 degrees from his body to straight up again.
Continuity: When The Drover (Hugh Jackman) rescues the children, he is holding the youngest one as they enter the water. When the camera cuts back, he’s holding a rifle. Then he is holding onto the raft with the others without a gun, and the action continues to switch between him holding and not holding the gun.
Continuity: When it starts to rain and you see Hugh Jackman with his coat off and over his shoulder, there are brown mud spots all over his shirt sleeve and jacket. In the very next shot the spots are gone and he appears to be wearing a clean shirt.
Incorrectly regarded as goofs: During the screening of _Wizard of Oz, The (1939)_, the first time it is seen in sepia. The two additional times they show the movie, it is in color. Famously however, the first 18 minutes of the film were shot in sepia (while Dorothy is in Kansas), with a transition to color once Dorothy arrives in Munchkinland.
Crew or equipment visible: When Nullah “pulls up” at Faraway Downs and prepares to dismount from his horse, someone is holding the horse by a visible lead line (third rein).
Crew or equipment visible: As Nullah gallops back to Faraway Downs after mounting the horse in the waterhole, there is a dust trail visible in front of his horse. Evidently someone is galloping ahead of him to ensure that his mount will follow, since Nullah is obviously too small to control an animal safely at speed.
Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): Right at the end of the movie, when Nullah is about to go walkabout, in one scene he commits the cardinal sin of looking directly into the camera. Although it could be argued he’s looking at Drover, but Drover’s too far away beside a tree, and the angle of view is wrong.
Factual errors: Earlier reported that Drover sees the burnt shoes of the children on mission island and that all boys were accounted for. In fact, it is never mentioned that all the boys survived the initial attack and the burnt shoes may have been those of children killed in the attack.
Continuity: Nullah’s pinto pony, which has distinctive markings, changes to another pinto (possibly several) throughout scenes and from scene to scene, probably to accommodate a stunt rider.
Plot holes: When the Japanese patrol arrives at the beach, they cannot see the 30 foot sailboat close enough to shore that little children could walk or easily swim out to it.
Plot holes: The policeman, Callahan, and his men arrive at Faraway Downs looking to take Nullah and don’t find him. However, while they are driving up to the ranch, Nullah and his mother can be clearly seen climbing the water tower ladder as the truck is facing in that direction. As they are leaving, two of the policemen are seen sitting in the bed of the truck as it pulls away. People on the station are running toward the water tower in obvious distress, Jackman climbing the ladder to retrieve Nullah and his mother, in full view of the policemen in the truck bed as it is no further than 50 yards away, yet, the truck makes no response to the obvious activity in full view of them.
Continuity: Drover begins lassoing a horse in a circular corral holding the lasso in the rope with his right hand. In obvious continuous motion, we see it in his left hand after a cut, then back to his right hand after the next cut.
Continuity: In the scene in which Sarah first meets Nullah, she is speaking to him with her left hand near her chest. In obvious consecutive action, it suddenly appears at her side after a cut, then, after the next cut, suddenly back near her chest.
Anachronisms: Lady Sarah Ashley’s mount – the last before she leaves England – has what appears to be a freeze brand on his shoulder. Freeze branding was invented in the 1960s and used as ID for valuable horses in the 1980s.
Continuity: During their trip to Darwin the group is resting at night, when suddenly Fletcher’s guys pour out the gasoline and light it up. When the fire is lit it is pitch black and the stars can be seen. Then the stampede starts and suddenly it is in the middle of the day.
Anachronisms: During the film Lady Ashley and Nullah view a newspaper in Australia advertising the “The Wizard of Oz”. Later in the film a sign in Darwin indicates that the year is 1939. It is highly unlikely that the newspaper or the showing of the “The Wizard of Oz” occurred in 1939 because the it was actually released in Australia during April 1940.
Factual errors: When the Drover gets into the pickup truck to leave Faraway Downs, he gets into the left-hand seat and drives away with the steering wheel on the left-hand side. Australian vehicles are typically equipped with steering wheel and driving controls on the right-hand side because Australian traffic drives on the left-hand side of the road.
Factual errors: Japanese bombing of Darwin includes a shot of a naval warship exploding. The ship exploding is an older US battleship with the distinctive tripod masts. The USS Peary which was destroyed during the first raid of the bombing of Darwin was a Clemson-class destroyer.
Continuity: When Lady Ashley, Drover, and the children are reunited on the wharf, a military ambulance seen behind them is also shown in other battle scenes at different locations in the same time setting. The hood ID numbers are the same.
Continuity: When Lady Ashley tells Drover to either stay at Faraway Downs or never return, Drover slams the white gate shut behind him as he storms out. In the next scene the gate is wide open again.
Factual errors: Maitland is shown being murdered in the Faraway Downs “billabong”. A billabong is a small lake of stagnant water when cutoff from the river. The scene and subsequent map show it just to be a pool attached to the river.
Anachronisms: Late in the movie the barman can be seen with crates of Victoria Bitter. This beer or “VB” as it is known is the local beer in the southern state of Victoria was not available in other areas of Australia until the 1970s.
Revealing mistakes: In an early scene, the Drover’s truck is running beside some bounding kangaroos. The leg action of the kangaroos does not match the speed they are moving at – the swing backwards is stopping too soon.
Factual errors: The Japanese planes are shown dropping torpedoes on land based targets. While maybe appropriate for the ships in the harbor, no pilot would use a torpedo for a land-based target.
Anachronisms: In the first “tent” scene between Grover, Sarah and the Aboriginal stockmen, Grover speaks to Sarah whilst cleaning his teeth. A close inspection of his toothbrush reveals that it is not 1939-vintage. It has dark bristles in the centre and white bristles around the outside. Also the toothbrush has an oral-dynamic shape, with a pointed end. In 1939 toothbrushes were not this sophisticated. They were rectangle-shaped with white bristles.
Continuity: In the ball scene, Sarah suddenly appears in a close-up with her make-up redone. Her lipstick was the most obvious change.
Incorrectly regarded as goofs: Sometimes during the attack scenes, the aircraft wheels are retracted; other times the wheels are extended while dropping bombs or firing at ground targets. This is not a goof, since the planes with extended landing gears are expected to be Aichi D3A “Val” bombers. This kind of plane had fixed landing gears. Other Japanese planes were Mitsubishi “Zeke” (or “Zero”) fighters. The “Zekes” were embarked aircraft with retractable landing gears.
Anachronisms: At the charity ball the song ‘Aquarela do Brasil’, composed by Ary Barroso in 1939, is heard. The song was first recorded later that year in Brasil by Aracy Cortes. It became an international hit after it was sung by Carmen Miranda in the movie “The Gang’s all here” in 1943. It’s most improbable the song could have been orchestrated, arranged and performed by a band the same year it was composed in a far away spot such as Australia.
Continuity: In the scene where Sarah and Nullah first meet in the house, Nullah’s shell necklace disappears and reappears from shot to shot.
Continuity: In the scene when Sarah asks Flynn to tell her all about Faraway Downs and Fletcher, Flynn pulls out of his stock a full bottle of rum. In the close-up shot when he is opening it, it’s another kind of bottle, not entirely filled with rum. In the next scene, he is again holding the (opened) former bottle.
Crew or equipment visible: In the scene when Drover storms away from Faraway Downs after his argument with Sarah, the traces of the came

Continuity: When Schindler goes to kiss the Jewish girl, he puts his hands on her shoulders. In the next shot, he pulls his hands away from her cheeks.
Continuity: When the boy is caught by the Nazi troops, he drops his case next to his feet. When we cut back to him, the bag is a meter away.
Continuity: When Schindler is reprimanded for kissing the Jewish girl by the SS officer, the SS officer picks up his cup twice in the same sentence.
Revealing mistakes: At the train station, when Schindler saves Itzhak Stern from being sent away, an officer is seen flipping through pages of names, but all the pages are exactly the same.
Continuity: The position of Amon Goeth’s arms as he is talking to Helen in the basement before he beats her.
Continuity: when Schindler is in bed with his wife and talking, his head is resting on her. But in the next shot, when she leans up/turns over to talk to him he is a lot further away from her.
Anachronisms: Yerushalayim shel Zahav was not written until twenty years after WWII
Continuity: When the kid is painting the letters “DIREKTOR” for the first time, a serif font is used. In a subsequent shot the word is shown in a san-serif, bolder, almost stencil-like font. The size of the word is also much larger than before.
Anachronisms: The bottle of Hennessy cognac as seen in the movie is the new shape released in 1990s. The original bottle shape was taller and had different label.
Revealing mistakes: Just after the little boy is held up to pull down another icicle from the roof of the train, the camera angle switches to the exterior and pulls back to show the train going by with no trace of snow or ice anywhere else on the train except right over that one doorway.
Crew or equipment visible: When Schindler and Stern negotiate with the Jewish investors outside the ghetto, Steven Spielberg is reflected on the rear window (his jacket is blowing in the wind)
Continuity: In the opening sequence when Schindler is preparing for the party (dressing up, getting money) the shape of his hands (and nails) differs from shot to shot.
Continuity: When the train of women is pulling into Aushwitz, ramps are already in place next to the track. They then disappear, and are put in place when the train stops.
Audio/visual unsynchronized: In the scene were Amon is picking a servant, he moves to a Jewish girl that does not raise her hand and asks her to get in his car. When he tells her to speak up, his voice is heard but his lips are not moving.
Crew or equipment visible: The scene inside the cellar between Oskar and the maid, when she faces the camera head on, there is no light coming from the right, yet as the scene progresses and the shot tightens, somebody turns on a light which becomes visible as they cut to her left and her head tilts forward.
Continuity: When Oskar first meets Amon over lunch, there is an officer who pours water twice, from two different angles.
Continuity: Oskar sits down at Amon’s table for lunch, getting ready to eat, with the camera looking from behind Amon. When they change angles you can see him already chewing the food.
Continuity: The opening sequence in the train station, one can clearly see that there is no metal cover where the guy is setting up the table, yet as they begin to take names, it seems that the action is happening in a different place.
Miscellaneous: When the doctor goes into his secret stash of fine liquors, there seems to be a ray of light inside. How is that possible since it must be inside a wall?
Continuity: The sequence of Oskar interviewing for a secretary position opens with a wide shot showing furniture in the room that is covered while the walls are being painted. Once it cuts to a close shot, the furniture is gone.
Anachronisms: The Billie Holiday song heard from a radio is not the wartime recording stated on the end credits. It’s a later version from the 1950s.
Factual errors: When Oskar Schindler takes his meal he uses his fork with the right hand and his knife with the left. Not being left-handed this would be a very unusual thing for a German man to do.
Anachronisms: When one train of the male Jews were taken to “Czechoslovakia” (wrong name for that history period) we can see some electric columns for electric rail tracks. That could be impossible because till the end of War there was no electric tracks in that area. Even all locomotives were steam-engine.
Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): After the little boy takes the saddle out of the car and after Schindler says thank you – he passes on some cigarettes to an SS personnel at the camp and Schindler calls him “Rottenfuhrer”, but the rank/insignia of the SS man responds to a different rank called Sturmmann which is one rank lower than the Rottenfuhrer rank.
Crew or equipment visible: The first time Amon Goeth shoots a Jewish prisoner, the large dirt squib is clearly visible in the background before it detonates.
Factual errors: The hanging of Amon Goeth looks absolutely nothing like the actual film footage of the execution. Place, clothing, procedures, number of people involved and the graphic events that took place are all wrong.
Continuity: In the beginning of the film when the Jews are being registered at Krakow, there is a woman who calls herself Helena Zucker, later on in the film when the Schindler Jews are being taken to Brinnlitz the same woman identifies herself as Jetti Zuckerman.
Continuity: When the men use a little boy to get ice from the roof of the train while they’re going to Schindler’s factory, the barbed wire on the window is in a zig-zag pattern, but the exterior shot reveals a line pattern.
Anachronisms: “Der frohliche Wanderer” or “Mein Vater war ein Wandersmann,” known in English as “The Happy Wanderer” was written after WII. This is the song being lead by Schindler in the cabaret at the beginning of the movie.
Incorrectly regarded as goofs: In the scene where they are separating the healthy from the sick, one of the men running naked is clearly not circumcised. However, many of the Jewish prisoners were not Torah observant but in fact had been assimilated into Gentile society, and thus may not have been, in fact, circumcised.
Revealing mistakes: During the era depicted, almost all European women did not shave any of their armpits, legs, or pubic areas, especially work or death camp women who were not allowed even the basics. All but one of the women in the film are trimmed and groomed.
Continuity: In the scene where Goeth attempts to shoot the Rabbi for producing too few hinges, he first draws his military issue Luger and it repeatedly misfires. He then pulls a semi-automatic pistol out of his pocket, and it too misfires. As he walks away disgusted he drops the automatic pistol on the ground, but amazingly it has morphed into a revolver when it hits the ground and is picked up by his subordinate officers.
Anachronisms: When the Nazis are separating healthy and sick prisoners, they play two shellac records. The second disc is labeled “Fogg Records”, but Mieczyslaw Fogg founded his record company after the war; moreover Fogg recorded mostly (if not only) Polish performers at his studio, and that song doesn’t resemble a Polish song.
Revealing mistakes: When Goeth attempts to shoot the Rabbi for producing too few hinges, his semi-automatic pistol fails to fire. In order to re-cock the pistol, he racks the slide (pulls back the slide) several times. When the gun still fails to fire, he tries the same thing with a second semi-automatic pistol. Each time the slide is pulled back, we should see an unfired round being ejected from the gun, but this does not happen.
Factual errors: In the film, Auschwitz seems to be liberated by the Soviet Army after the Nazi government has surrendered. In fact, Auschwitz was liberated on 27th January 1945 but the Nazi government did not surrender until 29th April 1945.
Continuity: Placement of Stern’s arm around one-armed worker at Schindler Warehouse.
Factual errors: Schindler was never awarded the Golden Nazi Party Badge, and thus couldn’t have sold it to save more Jews. In any event, all but a few of the badges were made of gold-plated brass.
Factual errors: The Golden Party Badge (Goldenes Parteiabzeichen) that Schindler is holding is the ‘large’ military version and not the civilian type that he would have had, if he had been awarded one.

Crew or equipment visible: In some scenes involving horses, modern orange cones can be seen on the ground directing the riders on the path past the camera to follow. This has been corrected for the Director’s Cut DVD.
Factual errors: When the Muslims are praying near Jerusalem they are praying towards the setting sun, west, not towards Mecca which is to the south south east.
Continuity: During the battle for Jerusalem, the crescent moon and the star nearby, change positions during a short period of time. First, the crescent is horizontal, with the star a short distance above it. In the next scene, the crescent is on an angle, and the star is where the unlit part of the moon would obscure it.
Factual errors: A few times during the movie, the Muslims are shown praying while the prayer call is being delivered. The prayer call precedes the prayer.
Anachronisms: During the movie, flags from Castilla y Leon kingdom are shown several times. At that time Castilla and Leon were separate kingdoms. They became one in 1230.
Continuity: The size of the hole made by the sword in the sand when Imad falls after the fight for the horse changes; from large and uneven to even
Revealing mistakes: When the messenger of Saladin is stabbed in throat by Guy de Lusignan. The blood that is squirted outward sprays from the left side of the neck where he was not stabbed.
Incorrectly regarded as goofs: Guy stabs Saladin’s messenger in the throat with a small dagger. When the messenger falls, Guy is holding a bloody sword, rather than his dagger. This is corrected in the Director’s cut, where Guy proceeds to behead the messenger with his sword.
Continuity: At 2:08:09 surrender of Jerusalem, the scar to left and below Bloom’s eye disappears.
Anachronisms: In the Director’s Cut, Sibylla tells her son, soon to be Baldwin V, in his geography lesson, that the King of England is Richard, the son of King Henry. Richard I did not succeed his father until 1189, three years after the death of Baldwin V.
Factual errors: Sibylla claims that she was married to Guy de Lusignan when she was 15 years old. In fact, she was 20 or 21 when she married him in 1180. She had been about 17 when she married her first husband, William of Montferrat, in 1176.
Anachronisms: The so-called ‘Templar’ who attacks Balian before the battle of Hattin (in 1187) wears a white surcoat bearing a black cross: the arms of the Order of St Mary of the Germans (aka the Teutonic Knights). This order was not founded until 1190 at the very earliest.
Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): When Balian is building the timber water channel he places the lower level duct on top of the higher one. This should be the opposite way round as in its current state any water running down would run under the lower duct and consequently be lost.
Continuity: During the second day of the siege, Balian watches several Saracen soldiers put their flag upon one of the towers; Balian is seen taking a weapon from a nearby archer, if you look closely that weapon is a war hammer. In the next shot, Balian is seen slashing a Saracen with an arrow.
Continuity: At the beginning of the film, when the party is ambushed, a rider charges towards Godfrey. He is wearing a conical helmet, but in the next shot, after Godfrey has dispatched him, his helmet is flat.
Incorrectly regarded as goofs: In the directors cut version, Balian is in Jerusalem, praying where Christ was crucified – you see him burying his dead wife’s gold necklace (cross). Later in the movie, you see him pulling out the ring that Sibylla gave him and kissing it – not the cross of his late wife.
Factual errors: Throughout the battle scenes, the crescent moon and star are used as symbols of Islam. However, these were not adopted until the mid 15th century and the conquest of Constantinople by the Ottoman Turks. Most of the Arab armies would have carried black, green or white flags.
Anachronisms: During the sea voyage and at other times, Balian is costumed in a top cinched with a row of buttons, almost a century before functional buttons appeared in his part of the world. Nonfunctional decorative buttons go back far in history, but functional buttons first appeared in the 1200’s in Germany, spreading to other parts of Europe in the later 1200’s through mid-1300’s. Using tie strings or some manner cinching laces (or better, just a loose pullover top) would have been more period-appropriate.
Errors in geography: In the movie Jerusalem is shown to be in a flat, sandy desert. Jerusalem is actually set on top of a mountain (Mount Zion) with massive valleys filled with trees, and other greenery surrounding the city walls.
Crew or equipment visible: In front of Reynald’s castle, when Saladin’s army comes, a yellow plastic pole that marks a stopping point for the foot soldiers is clearly visible. (This has been corrected for the Director’s Cut DVD.)
Factual errors: The effects of trebuchets have been extremely overdone. They neither reach as far as the film implies (certainly not with that kind of angle) nor does the impact of the ammunition cause the ground to tremble as if it were modern artillery. A hurled stone on a massive city wall may cause a dent and merely a thump upon impact.
Factual errors: During the 12th century the Knights Templar used the Maltese cross on their habit. It wasn’t until a century or so later they were forced to change to the Roman cross. Unfortunately, this is a mistake that Hollywood has always made.
Anachronisms: Two times, at the beginning and at the end of the movie, there is mention of Italian language spoken in Italy. There was no Italy nor standard Italian language at that time.
Factual errors: During the siege of Jerusalem, the Muslims fire flaming arrows at the city. No siege force would have used flaming arrows against a solid non-wood structure as they would have been completely useless.
Continuity: In the beginning of the movie when Balian is pounding on his piece he is shown clearly quenching the end of the piece after pounding on it, clearly showing only the middle of the piece is still hot enough to work, however the next shot shows him once again working on the end which is hot once more while the middle is not.
Continuity: When Balien catches up with his father on their way to Jerulsalem and they are attacked by Godfrey’s brothers forces. Odo, one of Godfrey’s men is struck by an arrow through the neck, but still keeps fighting. Soon after he is struck by a second arrow in the chest and falls to his knees. As the camera angle reverses, he suddenly has two arrows in the chest instead of one.
Continuity: In the Kerak battle sequence, the lighting changes back and forth drastically between cuts, from harsh midday light, to soft morning or sunset lighting.
Continuity: Balian’s arm was slashed by a sword perpendicular to his arm, however, the injury shown later has the gash going length-wise down his wrist.
Continuity: Balian’s hair keeps changing between shots when he and Tiberias talk on the battlefield.
Continuity: Balian slaps a boy, making him a knight with a nosebleed, but in the next shot, the blood is gone.

Continuity: After a very dusty slide into base during the baseball game, Crandall jumps up to introduce himself to Moore, at which point, his t-shirt is perfectly clean and neatly tucked into his pants.
Audio/visual unsynchronized: When helicopters are landing or taking off, the sound effects are that of turbine engine RPM being increased or decreased as during engine start-up and shutdown on the ground. RPM is relatively constant during takeoff and landing. (This seems to be a common mistake in many films using helicopter sound effects.)
Anachronisms: Joe Galloway’s Nikon camera shown throughout the movie is a model “F Photomic FTN”, first sold in Sept. 1968, but it was November 14, 1965 at 10:48 a.m., when Lt. Col. Hal Moore and his young troopers touched down at Landing Zone X-Ray in the Ia Drang.
Anachronisms: At the soldiers’ farewell party, they’re singing along to Sam & Dave’s hit, “Hold On, I’m Coming”. This song wasn’t released until 1966, after the battle depicted in the movie had already taken place.
Factual errors: In the film credits the following appears “With special thanks to: …And the 3RD Ranger Training Battalion…” No such unit exists or ever has. There is a 3RD Battalion, 75TH Ranger Regiment and 4TH through 6TH Ranger Training Battalions.
Revealing mistakes: When an A1 Skyraider drops napalm on the attacking NVA troops flames erupt about 30 feet behind where the napalm is dropped.
Anachronisms: When the soldiers are preparing to board the buses at Ft Benning, in front of the airborne towers you can see a strobe MP light over Lt Col Moore’s right shoulder.
Anachronisms: As the soldiers of 7th Cavalry ride into LZ X-Ray, they are holding their rifles with the muzzles pointed down. At the time of the battle, airmobile training was to hold the weapons muzzle up – in case of an accidental discharge, it was thought preferable to risk a round hitting the main rotor than to ensure that it went through the fuel tank (located directly under the troops).
Anachronisms: The U-Haul trailer being pulled by the station wagon in the beginning of the movie is a 1980’s or newer U-Haul paint scheme.
Anachronisms: In the final scene when Lt. Col Moore steps aboard the Huey, he is seen wearing bright orange memory-foam type ear plugs for hearing protection. These types of ear plugs were not developed until 1967, two years after the Battle of Ia Drang.
Anachronisms: When Lieutenant Colonel Moore is seen calling and talking to his platoon that is at risk of being overrun in the creek bed, the handset of the AN/PRC-25 radio is a newer-styled angular handset (H-33B/PT) not used until later in the Vietnam conflict. The handset of the AN/PRC-25 (“Prick-Twenty-five”) radio appropriate to 1965 would have been a rounded version (H-138/U).
Continuity: The number of helicopters in the initial approach to LZ X-Ray changes a number of times. There are six helicopters on the field ready to go, then in the next two scenes there are only four choppers. in the CGI scene while they are approaching there are suddenly upwards of twenty helicopters before returning to the six at the LZ.
Factual errors: The conversation between SGM Plumley and Joe Galloway regarding his status as a non-combatant did not take place as shown in the film. The conversation actually took place more than a week earlier, and it was between Joe Galloway and an Army Special Forces Officer, Major (later Colonel) Charles Beckwith. Joe Galloway arrived with in the Ia Drang with an M-16.
Factual errors: In the opening scene that depicts the destruction of Groupement Mobile No.100, the officers are shown wearing kepis, implying that they are members of the Foreign Legion. However, there were no Legion units present. GM 100 consisted of the 1st and 2nd Korea Battalions, Battalion de Marche of the 43rd Colonial Infantry and the 2nd Group of the 10th Colonial Artillery.
Factual errors: In the scene when the American soldier in the cut-off platoon gets hit with a Phosphorous Grenade you can see that his M16 has a chrome plated bolt. The chrome plated bolt was not introduced until roughly 1967, close to 2 years after the battle of the Ia Drang.
Factual errors: In the beginning, the French Group Mobile 100 is ambushed and killed to the last man. In reality, the group was ambushed several times and in all of them, they were able to escape, though only after suffering severe casualties.
Incorrectly regarded as goofs: In the scene where Joe Galloway helps defend the aid post, as he aims his M-16 it can clearly be seen that there is no round chambered, since the bolt can be seen in the forward position. However, the M-16 fires from the closed-bolt position, so when a round is chambered, the bolt will be forward.
Factual errors: In the second night of the battle there appears a full Moon, but in reality on 11/15/1965 the Moon was in the 3rd quarter.
Revealing mistakes: In the seen where Col Moore is signing his will, the will and fonts is clearly made from an ink jet printer. It should have been from a typewriter.
Factual errors: As pointed out during the beginning of the movie. The battalion was issued “a new weapon”. This would imply that they were issued the original variant of the M-16 rifle. During the battle scenes you can see several rifles that have a Forward Assist. This was not on the original variant of the M-16, it was introduced on the next model. The M-16 A-1. The Forward Assist is used to help seat a round into the chamber and is still used on the M-16/M-4 rifle.
Continuity: In the scene just following the ambush of first platoon’s patrol, Moore’s flashlight is shot and all the glass is gone. In a moment, after a scene cut, there is a piece of glass there.
Anachronisms: In the scene where the soldiers are celebrating being sent to war, the Sam and Dave song “Hold On, I’m Coming” is playing at the party. This song was actually not released until five months after the battle of La Trang, in March 1966.
Factual errors: SPOILER: The bayonet charge, accompanied by the gunship, that supposedly won the battle in the movie, never took place. Col. Moore’s unit simply withdrew as reinforcements arrived and took over.
Anachronisms: When Moore is kissing his children goodnight, the kid in the top bunk has a modern-day baseball batting helmet with ear-flaps hanging from the bed post
Factual errors: In the opening scene, French troops are shown with their beret insignia on the left side of their forehead. In reality, and contrary to most countries in the world, French soldiers have their insignia on the right side of their forehead.
Revealing mistakes: While Galloway is telling the tale of his two great-grandfathers, one of the body bags in the foreground is quite visibly breathing.

Factual errors: After the third interview with Nixon, on March 28 1977, Frost mentions that it is his birthday. Frost’s birthday is April 7.
Anachronisms: In one scene, David Frost tapes a segment with an escape artist in front of the Sydney Opera House, for his Australian talk show. The Quay Grand apartment complex, also known as “The Toaster”, is in the background. It was built in 1999.
Anachronisms: When David first arrives to meet Nixon, a modern satellite dish is clearly visible on top of La Casa Pacifica.
Continuity: At one point, someone mentions that Frost’s contract with Australia’s Channel 9 has not been renewed. Earlier, during Frost’s Sydney TV taping, studio cameras had the ATN Channel 7 logo.
Revealing mistakes: Flipped shot: When Frost pitches his idea to CBS, a poster promoting “Hawaii Five-O” (1968) is on the wall. The poster shows a wave moving from right to left. The image is reversed; commercials and the program’s intro show a wave moving from left to right.
Anachronisms: When Frost and Caroline Cushing sit next to each other in the 747, Cushing’s left arm rest has a digital channel display with channel up/down buttons. In 1977, the controls would have been mechanical.
Incorrectly regarded as goofs: When David Frost meets with the CBS executive, a poster for “M*A*S*H” (1972) is on the conference room wall. The poster shows a Bell UH-1 (Huey) helicopter, which was first produced in 1959. M*A*S*H was set during the Korean War, 1950-53. However, the M*A*S*H TV show, particularly during the Wayne Rogers years, was a satire of the Vietnam war. Hueys appear in the series (and the movie) as part of that satire.
Anachronisms: The Beverly Hilton lobby is clearly modern.
Factual errors: Frost and Nixon behave as if they’ve never met before. In real life, Frost interviewed Nixon when he ran for president in 1968. Nixon enjoyed the interview so much that after he was elected, he met with Frost in the White House to discuss producing a television special.
Incorrectly regarded as goofs: The 747 Frost rides to the USA has a BOAC logo on its tail, but the text on the side clearly says British Airways. British Airways had several 747-100 series aircraft with this hybrid livery (tail numbers G-AWNB, D, E, F, H, I, J and M).
Factual errors: When Frost is flying to LAX on a British Airways 747, the flight crew announcements are in a distinctly American accent. While not impossible for British Airways to have American flight deck crew, it would be extremely unlikely.
Factual errors: In the opening section, when Frank Langella delivers Nixon’s resignation speech, he says “To leave office before my term is completed is abhorrent to every instinct in my body. I have never been a quitter.” Nixon actually said “I have never been a quitter. To leave office before my term is completed is abhorrent to every instinct in my body.”
Incorrectly regarded as goofs: When Frost is reporting on the escape artist, he has a hand mic, but the crew is using a boom mic. Normally, he would have only one mic. However, if Frost needs to move to the shore to talk to the escape artist, the boom might not reach. If he wanted it to look like an “on-the-spot” interview, he would hold a fake hand mic.
Continuity: For the final daytime interview with Nixon, the Frost team gets into a red car at the hotel, and out of a black car at the Smith house.
Continuity: When Nixon arrives for the final interview, he arrives in a single car, not a motorcade, as he did for the other interviews. When Nixon leaves, Frost looks out the window, and you can clearly hear the sound of escort motorcycles, which were not there when Nixon arrived.
Incorrectly regarded as goofs: When Frost and Nixon meet for the first time at La Casa Pacifica, Nixon says, “See you in March,” referring to the interviews. Later in the scene Frost writes a $200,000 check to Nixon, and dates it 3/17/75. He could have post-dated the check, to make sure he didn’t pay for canceled interviews.
Revealing mistakes: Frost’s check for Nixon, drawn on the “First Trust Bank of London”, is in dollars, not pounds, as one might expect of a British check.
Anachronisms: Several modern glass-fronted buildings appear throughout the film.
Factual errors: When Frost watches the Nixon resignation in Australia, the television broadcast is in color. Color TV was introduced in Australia in 1975.
Anachronisms: While Frost and his team are doing research, modern VHS cassettes are visible in one scene. While the VHS format debuted in September 1976, it’s extremely unlikely that they would have had VHS tapes of events that happened 2 years earlier.
Factual errors: In the end credits, the last name of George Eliot, author of the novel “Middlemarch”, is spelled “Elliot.”

Incorrectly regarded as goofs: The film contains an explicit notice that “certain characters and events have been fictionalized for dramatic purposes”, so these changes are not goofs. For instance, the Lovells did not host a party during the Apollo 11 landing; Ken Mattingly was already at Mission Control when the Apollo 13 accident happened, and was not really the person who devised the power-up procedure. There are various other minute contradictions of history and the film is prey to a large number of factual errors due to the large volume of documentary footage/evidence from the actual event. This is not a documentary.
Factual errors: After the party, Lovell holds his thumb in front the gibbous moon. Then, telling Marilyn where to find “her” mountain, he says the Sea of Tranquility is “where the shadow crosses the white part.” The terminator was in fact near the Sea of Tranquility on July 20, 1969, but the moon was less than half full; it’s depicted in the scene as gibbous, with the terminator on the other side.
Factual errors: When Jim Lovell is standing in his garden looking at the moon (one eye closed) he covers and uncovers the moon (from his perspective) with his thumb. Since the moon was the only light source in this situation, the shadow of his thumb would have to be shading his eye. But the third person perspective shows the thumb’s shadow elsewhere.
Factual errors: In Houston the moon set that night at about midnight CDT, while the Apollo 11 astronauts were returning to their Lunar Module; hence it would not be visible after the party at the Lovells’.
Anachronisms: NASA’s “worm” logo was not developed until 1975.
Anachronisms: A technician is wearing a Rockwell International logo on his coveralls; the logo was seen as early as 1971. North American Rockwell became Rockwell International only in 1973 when they acquired Collins Radio. The aircraft division of North American Aviation/North American Rockwell was known as North American Aircraft Operations.
Factual errors: The launch tower was on the north side of the Saturn V. If Mattingly was watching from east of the pad near the beach, then he would see it on the right.
Revealing mistakes: The downward view toward the rocket rising from the pad shows cars in the parking lots. During an actual launch, the pad was completely evacuated and the lots would have been empty.
Continuity: Houston confirms that the BPC (Boost Protective Cover) is cleared before it is jettisoned by Lovell. The BPC was attached to the launch escape tower and was pulled away when the tower was jettisoned.
Anachronisms: In April 1970, Lovell’s daughter can be seen holding the Beatles’ “Let it Be” album, which wasn’t released until May 1970.
Continuity: When Apollo 13 is due for re-entry we briefly see Gene Krantz with a fastened collar and tie. A minute or so later he is seen fastening his collar and tightening his loose tie.
Continuity: At the beginning of the movie, Jim Lovell comes home with some champagne and greets Jack Sweigert and his date for the evening, Tracy. When Jack starts telling Tracy about some of the things Jim’s done, she says, “Wow,” with her hands clasped up by her chest. In the next shot, her hands are clasped down by her waist.
Continuity: Just after the explosion, when Lovell is saying “we’ve got multiple caution and warnings, Houston,” the MET clock (Mission Elapsed Time in hours, minutes, and seconds) is plainly visible reading 091:34:10. When next seen less than a minute later, it has backed up to 056:55:12.
Factual errors: The actual explosion took place at MET (Mission Elapsed Time) 055:54:53, a full hour before the time shown.
Factual errors: The astronauts are shown looking at Mare Tranquilitatis, then crossing from sunlight into shadow, followed by loss of signal, all within seconds. In fact at loss of signal they had been in the moon’s shadow for some time and were nowhere near Mare Tranquilitatis.
Factual errors: While passing over Tsiolkovsky crater on the moon’s far side, the astronauts also speak of sighting Fra Mauro and Mare Imbrium, both nearly halfway around the moon.
Factual errors: Just after acquisition of signal, Houston tells the astronauts that their speed is “approximately 7,062 feet per second” and their altitude above the moon is 56 nautical miles. That speed is 500 ft/s below lunar escape velocity at that altitude, hence impossible on a free return trajectory. In fact, any free return trajectory symmetrical about the moon-earth line would put them at over 100 nautical miles altitude at acquisition of signal.
Factual errors: A TV scene at Mission Control shows Houston Astros player Jimmy Wynn hitting a home run on 13 April 1970. The Astros were shut out by the Los Angeles Dodgers 2-0 that day. The home run shown was hit 10 June 1967, in a game between Cincinnati and Houston, it was the longest in Crosley field history
Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): As Neil Armstrong walks on the moon, Walter Cronkite says the Apollo 11 landing is 18 months after the tragic Apollo 1 launchpad fire. It was actually 30 months after.
Anachronisms: “Mr. Coffee”-type drip pots weren’t in use at the time.
Continuity: A red ashtray and a paper cup in the control center disappear between shots.
Anachronisms: The television that Blanch Lovell watches the final splashdown on is a Sharp model that was not made until the late 1980s.
Anachronisms: In the opening sequence with Apollo 1, the crew uses a black keyboard (Block II). The keyboard on Apollo 1 was white (Block I).
Factual errors: In the opening scene, where the Apollo 1 crew is walking across the swing arm, the Service Module is incorrectly shown as a Block II Service Module (grey w/ white areas); Apollo 1, Serial Number 012, was a Block I Spacecraft – its Service Module was all-white, like the toy spacecraft Lovell shows his son later in the movie.
Factual errors: The Apollo 1 fire DID NOT initiate with a switch throw, as this movie depicts. During the Accident Investigation, this was a possibility which was dismissed after a thorough investigation.
Factual errors: The mating of launch vehicle stage components was a much more delicate and deliberate process that this movie depicts. Tours, even for high-level VIPs, would most likely be suspended while such operations were in progress. For the scene where the Third Stage is being lowered onto the Second Stage, a retractable work platform, curved to fit around the Second Stage, would have been in place just below the Upper Field Joint (top of Second Stage). Numerous hard-hatted workers, most on their knees, would have been on the edge of this platform, making sure that the two stages were in correct alignment for mating.
Factual errors: This Movie incorrectly depicts the Apollo 13 Spacecraft and Launch Vehicle as being delivered to the Launch Pad on April 9, 1970 – two (2) days before launch. Much more “pad time” was required, and Apollo 13 was actually delivered to Launch Pad 39A on December 15, 1969.
Factual errors: Notwithstanding that this movie used dramatic license to make a better story, a few points should be clarified, particularly concerning the portrayals of Astronaut Fred Haise and the Grumman Corporation: Fred Haise was considered one of the best and brightest of his group (1966); the scenes where he gives Swigert a dirty look in the Simulator, blames Swigert for the Accident, and nearly screws up the course correction maneuver are not supported by any historical account available to this contributor. Grumman Corporation Personnel worked as hard as anyone else on the team to bring the Apollo 13 Crew home safely; the display of “no can do” attitude shown in the movie is not supported by any historical account available to this contributor. This movie also neglects the contributions of Astronaut Charlie Duke; by the time of the Accident, he was no longer contagious but still feeling unwell. He got out of his sick bed to help devise new Lunar Module Procedures, just as Ken Mattingly is shown doing for the Command Module – in fact, Duke helped devise the course correction maneuver in the Lunar Module Simulator.
Factual errors: Apollo 13 incorrectly shown going around the Moon with Lunar Module (LM) (Aquarius) Landing Legs still folded. These had to be extended before the Descent Propulsion System (DPS) could be fired, which had been done (for the first of three times) many hours before. Once extended, the legs could not be retracted.
Anachronisms: During the TV Show just prior to the Accident, Fred Haise uses the term “Lunar Excursion Module”, a term obsolete by 1970.

Anachronisms: Multiple characters are observed drinking Bud Light bottles with clear plastic labels. These labels were not seen on Bud Light bottles until 2004.
Revealing mistakes: In a couple shots of Will Jimeno (who is pinned under heavy concrete slabs) the concrete slabs visibly rise and fall with his shallow breathing.
Continuity: As Will is talking about his family, we see a shot of him talking with two rocks on his shoulder. However, after a few other cuts, in the next shot the rocks are gone. Then they are back on in the following shot.
Anachronisms: In scenes outside the Port Authority Bus Terminal, concrete planters are clearly visible surrounding the building. The planters were added to the bus terminal after the September 11th attacks.
Anachronisms: In the early scenes at the Port Authority, there is a wrap-around ad on a building for the Charles Schwab “Talk to Chuck” campaign, which wasn’t introduced until 2005.
Anachronisms: During a scene in the hospital near the end of the film, a can of Sierra Mist can be seen on a table. Although this drink existed in 2001, it used a different logo in the 2000-2002 time frame. This logo is from the 2003-2006 time frame.
Factual errors: In one of the opening scenes we see a #2 train, however this train is not a real #2 train. The real #2 trains run on the IRT line, these trains are characterized by being narrower, the train we see in the scene was probably a BMT line train; the BMT line trains look more like the one in the scene and also have a chassis as wide as the one in the shot.
Continuity: At the dinner table, Donna’s left hand is visible on her chin from the camera shot behind her, but her hand is not even near her face, on the camera shot in front of her.
Factual errors: At the beginning of the movie, one of the characters asks the Yankee fan if he saw Jeter’s home run during Saturday’s game. Derek Jeter didn’t play the Saturday before Sept. 11 because he was injured. In that game on Saturday, September 8 2001, the Yankees beat the Boston Red Sox 9 to 2. Enrique Wilson filled in at shortstop for the injured Derek Jeter and went 2 for 4 including a triple, with a run and a run batted in.
Continuity: When Allison goes to the CVS with Jerry and Will’s sister, her purse strap changes. When the camera is facing her the straps are both over her shoulder, and when the camera is on her back, one of the straps is on her shoulder and the other is hanging down. It switches back and forth between shots.
Factual errors: There is an outdoor scene showing trees with leaves displaying bright fall colors. Leaves in the northeast US don’t begin to change until late September and would not be at their peak colors until mid-October.
Factual errors: The scene outside the port authority building has a shadow of AA flight 11 moving over the officer from his right to left, which he followed visually, indicating a northerly flight path at that time of day as the sun would have been in the southeast sky. Flight 11 was headed south and at that time, its path was never between the sun and the port authority terminal, and it struck the north side of the North Tower.
Revealing mistakes: When the rescuers are lifting the concrete slab off of John McLoughlin, the first slab they remove is quite obviously made of painted cardboard and/or styrofoam.
Anachronisms: In the beginning, there is a view of the streets with a crossing sign. However, that type of electronic sign (the one with the hand for “Don’t Walk” and the person for “Walk”) was not installed until December 2001. At the time of the attacks, the old signs with the words were still in use.
Factual errors: The mall shows Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream being a store when in reality it was a kiosk.
Errors in geography: There is a brief scene set in Hong Kong, where locals are stunned by what they see happening in New York on TV. The background clearly shows that it is daytime. However, when the 9/11 events occurred, it was night time in Hong Kong.
Anachronisms: When Jimeno is dealing with the tourists outside the bus terminal, the shadow of the first plane is cast on the E Walk of The Westin New York at Times Square. This cannot be true, since both the E Walk and The Westin were under construction at the time and opened in October 2002.
Anachronisms: At the beginning of the movie when we see different parts of New York City, you can actually see a modern Dodge Daurango. These SUV’s came in 2005 not in 2001.
Anachronisms: During an establishing shot at the beginning of the film, a Honda Element can easily be seen driving past an intersection. This car was introduced in 2003, so there couldn’t have been one present in New York in 2001.
Continuity: On the way to the Police Station where Donna thinks she can pick up her husband, the nail polish on her finger nails has disappeared. In the next scene, it is back again.
Anachronisms: A 2004 Nissan Pathfinder Armada is seen driving by, the movie is set in 2001.
Anachronisms: In the scene with the local police going to Donna McLoughlin’s house, a blue police car and a fire vehicle pull up. The blue police car has wheels on it only available on the 2003 and newer Crown Victoria, this movie was set in 2001.
Crew or equipment visible: When Allison Jimeno leaves the house to take a walk, you can see the shadow of a crew member on the sidewalk.

Anachronisms: As marchers leave the Castro and pull the trolley pole off a PCC streetcar, it has the destination sign “F Market”. The F-Market line was not put into operation by SF Muni until September 1, 1995 as a tourist line between the Castro and the Embarcadero.
Anachronisms: When Harvey Milk moves from New York City to San Francisco, a shot of Highway 280 shows the modern freeway signs (bright green, with exit numbers) instead of the 1970s versions of the signs (darker green, no exit numbers).
Continuity: During one of the elections, the characters discuss losing Imperial County and marking it on the wall board only after we’d seen the shot of them already marking it.
Incorrectly regarded as goofs: SPOILER: Dan White fires seven shots: Three to Moscone and four to Milk. The numbers of shots is accurate and well-documented; what the film doesn’t show is White reloading between the murders (one of Prosecution’s key issues in attempting to establish premeditation – bringing extra ammo).
Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): Late in the movie, while making a speech Harvey quotes the saying on the Statue of Liberty as being, in part, “Your huddled masses yearning to be free”. The actual quote is: “Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free”.
Factual errors: At the end of the film the title cards claim that Dan White’s lawyers claimed that his consumption of junk food had caused a chemical imbalance in his brain. In reality, White’s lawyers claimed that his massive consumption of junk food was a symptom, not a cause, of his depression. Psychologists employed by White’s defense argued that he was clinically depressed, and pointed to several changes in behavior, among them the consumption of mass quantities of junk food. One of these psychologists claimed, as an aside, that the food may have contributed to White’s mood swings, but it was never claimed that they caused his mental problems.
Anachronisms: During rally scenes in the San Francisco Civic Center, the old and new San Francisco Public Library buildings are visible in the background. The Pei Cobb Freed designed New Main Branch Library was not built until 1995
Continuity: Scott is seen swimming underwater in David Goodstein’s pool. In the next shot, his head is out of the water, but his frizzy hair is dry.
Continuity: In the scene where Scott leaves Harvey, Scott pets the family dog who is sitting in an easy chair and exits. Immediately after, we see Harvey pacing the room, and the chair is empty. He sits down in the chair opposite a second later, and the dog is back,in the same position as before.
Continuity: During Milk’s speech in front of City Hall (after he received the threatening postcard) the microphone he uses switches between two different types.
Anachronisms: In the scene where Milk and allies dispose of Coors Beer, contemporary Bud Light and Budweiser taps are clearly seen in the bar.
Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): When Dan White (Josh Brolin) is sitting shirtless looking out the window while contemplating his murderous deed, you can clearly see Josh’s tattoo on his right shoulder blade. Dan White did have a tattoo, but it was a shamrock on his arm.
Anachronisms: During one of the first scenes in the camera shop, a Kodak cardboard is on the shelf. The Kodak logo is one of the newer logos that was not designed yet in the 1970’s. Kodak has changed its corporate logo of the “K” several times.
Continuity: When the mayor is about to sign the ordinance, the pen is in his left hand and it’s evident from here and later in the movie that he’s left-handed. However, when the camera focuses in on him actually signing his name, it’s obvious that the signer is right-handed.
Incorrectly regarded as goofs: A scene shows Harvey Milk in the opera house during the last act of ‘Tosca’. In the next scene (the next day) he says he saw Bidu Sayao (late Brazilian soprano) the night before. While Ms. Sayao never sang the role of ‘Tosca’, Harvey was actually referring to his date, Bidu Sayao – not anyone on stage.
Continuity: When Scott and Harvey are lying in bed together in the beginning of the film, Scott tells Harvey he is going to get fat. The scene is shown again at the end of the film, but this time Scott tells Harvey he is going to be a “fat ass.”
Anachronisms: During a scene where Harvey Milk and Jack Lira with a group of people stroll down Polk Street in the San Francisco Civic Center, the Civic Center Courthouse building is visible in the left background. In 1978, the San Francisco Superior Court was located on the fourth floor of City Hall. The Civic Center Courthouse designed by Hood Miller Associates and Ross Drulis Architects was not built until late 1997.
Anachronisms: In the scene where Harvey Milk mounts a soapbox, in the distance you can see a U.S. Postal Service vehicle that was not manufactured until the late 1980s. It disappears in the next shot of that background – which comes about two sentences later.
Factual errors: During the baptism of Dan White’s son Charles, there are two godfathers and one godmother. When a child is being baptised in the Roman Catholic faith, they have one godfather and one godmother; having two godparents that are the same gender as the child being baptised (as well as one of the other gender) is typical of a baptism within the Protestant faith.
Anachronisms: The Chinese food containers looked like the old standard white ones but were missing the wire handles that would hold them together. Microwavable glued containers didn’t exist until fairly recently.
Anachronisms: In the bar scene when you see the Bud Light tap is in the background. Bud Light wasn’t around until the year 1982.
Incorrectly regarded as goofs: While the parking meters on Castro Street were appropriately changed, the more modern painted T-lines (to define each parking space) were not covered up. However, T-lines are visible in 1970s archival footage used in the 1984 documentary “The Times of Harvey Milk”.
Incorrectly regarded as goofs: At one point, Harvey Milk uses the term “African-American,” which didn’t come into popular use until the 1980s. Although mostly popularized by the Reverend Jesse Jackson in the early 1980’s, the term had been in use since the 1850s.
Incorrectly regarded as goofs: In the trailer, the “Rainbow” flag in unfurled behind Milk at a rally. The Rainbow flag was not adopted as the official symbol until the year following Milk’s death. However, in a behind-the-scenes interview on the DVD, the person who was at the actual rally said he suggested to Milk to use the flag, and they did.
Anachronisms: When Milk is walking the streets gathering support to run for supervisor, in one shot there are cars to the right of the screen that are clearly modern-day, including a black SUV.
Anachronisms: In the scene in the camera shop after Harvey has given his speech on the soap box, a red “UNITE HERE” poster is visible. “UNITE HERE” did not join together until 2004.
Factual errors: When Harvey and Dan are being interviewed on TV in January 1978, Dan says he’s expecting his first child; however, at the baby’s christening, which appears to takes place no more than a few weeks after the interview, baby Charles is able to hold his head up. Babies typically become able to hold their heads up when they’re around four months old. Also, in real life, Charles White was born in mid-June 1978 – after the contentious vote on the youth campus and after Harvey’s forty-eighth birthday in May. (Despite the fact that Dan’s grudge against Harvey developed before Charles’s birth, Harvey was still invited to the christening.)
Factual errors: 1978 did not have a Friday, November 18th.
Factual errors: The site of the Milk/Briggs debate is incorrectly identified as a school within the Walnut Creek Unified School District. The debate did take place in the city of Walnut Creek, at Northgate High School. Northgate High School was and still is part of the Mount Diablo Unified School District.
Factual errors: The characters refer several times to The Advocate as a magazine, but in the 1970s it was a tabloid newspaper. It didn’t become a magazine until 1992.

Anachronisms: When Avner is leaving his apartment in New York, a yellow “rubber bumper” MGB is present in the line of cars on the side of the street. The federally mandated rubber energy absorption bumpers were not installed on MGBs until late summer of 1974 as a 1974/5 model. The age of Avner’s daughter would seem to suggest this scene takes place sometime before then.
Errors in geography: When Avner and Ephraim are walking along the sea front in Israel, modern Maltese phone boxes and buses are visible in the background.

Continuity: Steve and an Italian girl observe the first victim in Rome from an Alfa Romeo Giulia (model 1974 or later, with a straight trunk). When the victim walks through the street, putting on his coat, Steve and the girl drive away in a Lancia Flavia. When the victim is in the store, they arrive in the Alfa Romeo Giulia.
Anachronisms: Though they took the time to digitally add the World Trade Center to the final shot, they didn’t edit out the Citigroup Center, Trump World Tower, and the Bloomberg building, which were built after the time of the movie.
Continuity: When Avner and Ephraim are walking along the beach, they pass the same old man twice. The first time, nothing is on the ground near the old man. The second time, he is next to a briefcase.
Continuity: When Avner walks into Papa’s home, he walks towards the kitchen past a table. There is a man standing next to the table talking to someone sitting down but in the next shot, the man standing up is gone.
Continuity: When the crew eats for the first time together, Steve holds up his plate for Avner to put some meat on it. In the next shot, Steve’s plate is on the table as Avner serves him the meat.
Continuity: At the end of the film, when Avner’s wife Daphna touches his face, her nails are polished. After they have sex, her nails are not polished.
Anachronisms: The shop the victim in Rome enters has modern San Pellegrino cans.
Anachronisms: When Avner and one of his team members find their mate stabbed to death on the bench near the river, a modern-day truck, with a spoiler and cooling unit on the roof, passes by on the bridge above.
Anachronisms: When walking on the waterfront in Tel Aviv, a rusty beat-up 1972-79 VW Bus appears on the street. The scene takes place in late 1972. A brand-new first year model would not be that beat up and rusty after just a few months.
Anachronisms: The reel-to-reel tape recorder used in the debriefing is a Revox B77, which came on the market in 1978.
Factual errors: When Avner is on the airplane to Geneva, the flight number starts with SA. That’s the code for South African Airways, which has never flown to Geneva.
Anachronisms: When Avner checks his TV, he is holding a MagLite in his mouth. The first MagLite was introduced in 1979, and the model he’s holding was introduced in 1984.
Factual errors: Israeli weightlifter Yossef Romano is portrayed as a fit man who attempts a rescue, which eventually results in his death. At the time of the kidnapping, Romano was injured, and walking with crutches.
Anachronisms: When the first Palestinian victim (the translator of 1001 Nights) turns at the corner at his house, right before his assassination (around the 37th minute of the movie) a modern parking meter is visible with a sign of a cellular phone.
Continuity: After being shot, the first victim falls face-first onto his grocery bag. In the next scene, he is lying face up.
Continuity: When Avner and his wife are making love in New York, he is drenched in sweat and his hair is soaking wet. His wife wipes his face and his wet hair is visible. In the next shot, his hair is dry.
Audio/visual unsynchronized: When Avner is waiting for the Palestinian’s daughter and wife to come out of their building, before letting off the telephone bomb, the little girl says the same line twice. Off-screen, she says hello to her driver before she actually meets him. She comes out, repeats the same line, and says hello to the driver when she meets him.
Anachronisms: The black Mercedes W114 230.6 used by the KGB agents during the Greece assassination scene is patched together to make it more “historic.” The front doors were made to look like a Series 1 model, with divided side windows, made prior August 1973. The side mirror was removed completely. The rest of the car is clearly a Series 2 (post August 1973), including the model designation 230.6 itself (it should read just “230″, the two different models 230.4 and 230.6 co-existed after August 1973).
Continuity: When Jeanette opens her dressing gown, you can clearly see her bra. When she takes the gown off, there is no trace of a bra.
Anachronisms: In Brooklyn, Avner walks past a wheelchair-accessible curb cut, which didn’t exist in 1972.
Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): In Greece, just before the large explosion, Avner, who is supposed to be fluent in German, asks “Kann ich ein Licht haben?” as he asks for a light for his cigarette. The person responds “sind Sie Deutscher?” (“Are you German?”). The correct question is, “Kann ich Feuer haben?”
Factual errors: In one scene a chess game is briefly visible in the foreground. The lower right-hand square on the chessboard is dark. That square should be a light-colored square.
Factual errors: In the film, the German snipers at the airport were using rifles with telescopic sights. In reality, the Germans were criticized for their lack of preparation, including the fact that none of the snipers had telescopic or infrared sights.
Continuity: In Rome, Wael Zwaiter is shot by Avner and Robert, after which Zwaiter falls on his stomach. However, when Carl comes back to pick up the used bullets, Zwaiter is laying on his back.
Continuity: When the team is eating dinner after the assassination where Avner is nearly blown up in the adjoining room, the scene begins with a white rug under the table and then the rug is mystically gone in the later scene and bare wood floors are seen.
Continuity: At the shootout at the airport at the end of the movie one of the terrorists machine guns the first group of hostages in the first helicopter, throws a grenade into it, and takes off running. In the wide shot of the helicopters when it shows the one on the left exploding, you can see the terrorist who threw the grenade running to the other helicopter and his body is hit with several bullets. In the next scene, that same terrorist is running toward the camera and again he gets hit by the bullets.
Incorrectly regarded as goofs: Late in the film Avner makes a telephone call from a booth on a street apparently in Brooklyn. He gives the phone’s area code as 212. This was correct at the time the movie was set – Brooklyn changed to the 718 area code in 1984.

Anachronisms: In the paddock scenes, the bronze statue of Seabiscuit is clearly visible.
Factual errors: At Pimlico racetrack, the Maryland flag is upside down. The Calvert family seal (gold and black) should be at the top of the pole.
Revealing mistakes: The “wild” mustangs that Tom Smith is chasing at the beginning of the movie are shod.
Anachronisms: In the montage of still photographs purporting to show the first year of the Great Depression, a truck is visible with a 1937 license plate.
Continuity: Seabiscuit continually changes from a light honey bay to a dark reddish bay. He also grows and shrinks throughout the film, and his mane switches sides. A horse’s mane falls to one side or the other, it doesn’t change from side to side.
Anachronisms: When they allow Red to ride Seabiscuit into a field to “teach him to be a horse again”, Howard’s car has a modern “antique auto” license plate.
Continuity: Before the final (Santa Anita) race, Red Pollard laces his leg brace in the front of his shin. During the race, the brace is laced on the outside of his calf.
Factual errors: Red’s father calls his wife Agnes. Red’s mother’s name was actually Edith. Red’s future wife (who we do not meet in the film) is named Agnes.
Factual errors: War Admiral is repeatedly referred to as being 18 hands vs. Seabiscuit’s 15 hands. The horses were actually the same height, with some sources listing Seabiscuit as the heavier of the two.
Factual errors: The United States Flag at the Pimlico racetrack has 50 stars. In the 1930s, the United States only had 48 states.
Continuity: In the third race, when Tick-Tock beats Crow Segment and they sell out the infield, Seabiscuit’s number is 4, except for one quick segment as they parade to the track. Then, Seabiscuit’s number is 5.
Audio/visual unsynchronized: Late in the film, as Charles Howard worries in the bleachers about letting Red ride in the race, his wife Marcella plays with the marble game. She keeps talking in the next shot, but her lips (at the top of frame) don’t move as the audio finishes.
Anachronisms: Towards the end of the movie, after Seabiscuit has won the race at the Pimlico racetrack, a lit electronic scoreboard can be seen in the background. Electronic scoreboards didn’t exist in the 1930s.
Anachronisms: During races at Santa Anita Park, a turf course is inside the dirt course. Santa Anita’s turf course was built in 1953.
Anachronisms: In one of his voiceovers, Tick-Tock says, “The Iceman Cometh”. The phrase itself comes from the Eugene O’Neill play of the same title, which wasn’t produced theatrically until 1946 and refers to George Woolf who was called “The Iceman”. Though the phrase “The Iceman Cometh” isn’t historically accurate, it is likely a reference to Jeff Bridges’s role in the 1973 movie version of the O’Neill play.
Anachronisms: The jockeys all wear clear plastic safety lenses, which weren’t used until after World War II.
Anachronisms: The jockeys have chin straps holding their hats on. Jockeys’ hats didn’t have chin straps until the Caliente Safety Helmet was introduced in 1956.
Factual errors: The car radio plays music as soon as it’s turned on. In the 1930s, all radios had vacuum tubes, which had to warm up for 10 to 15 seconds.
Crew or equipment visible: When Red exercises a friend’s horse, and the horse bolts, you can see a blue jacket on the other side of the bush that the horse is falling over.
Anachronisms: The bullring in Tijuana has a modern-day Telmex (Mexican phone company) logo.
Revealing mistakes: During Seabiscuit’s last race he’s at the back of the pack racing against a dozen horses, but the groomed racetrack only shows three sets of horse tracks.
Continuity: Flipped shot: After the match race with War Admiral, there is a shot of the train returning west. The numbers on the train are backwards.
Revealing mistakes: During the credits, a printing plate for a newspaper page is shown. The lettering of the story and the headline “MATCH RACE” is the correct way round, whereas a printing plate is a mirror-image of the page that it prints.
Anachronisms: The scenes at Pimlico and Santa Anita Racecourses show ovals equipped with the modern Fontana Safety rail, which is very wide at the top. These rails were not adopted in the US until the late 1980s. In the 1930s, the rails were narrow.
Factual errors: When Red and Seabiscuit are recuperating, Red asks the track guy to mow around a tree to make a sort of track. The track guy brings out a push mower. The grass he is cutting is higher than the blades. A push mower won’t cut grass that high, it will just push over it.
Anachronisms: When the four principals attend a newsreel theatre, the on-screen announcer says that Seabiscuit is “the biggest thing on four legs since Hope and Crosby.” The scene is set well before the 1 November 1938 Pimlico race, but Road to Singapore (1940), Bob Hope’s first film with Bing Crosby, was released in March 1940.
Audio/visual unsynchronized: While Red is exercising a horse for his former boss, the “hand start” John Deere tractor makes a sound like an electric starter.
Continuity: After a scene that takes place circa 1930, a subtitle reads “six years later.” In the next scene, which takes place in Tijuana, the subtitles read “1933.”
Continuity: During the runaway scene, the horse’s reins change from brown braided leather reins to black rubber reins.
Continuity: When Red is racing with George, George says, “There’s my hole; gotta go.” In the replay, he says, “There’s my hole; gotta fly.”
Factual errors: “Six-month-old” Seabiscuit is played by a much younger foal.
Anachronisms: All-female mariachi groups did not exist until the 1970s. In the 1930s and ’40s, women were usually featured singers, rarely played an instrument, and never wore the male riding suit.
Factual errors: During Seabiscuit’s Santa Anita Handicap win, he is running dead last early in the race. The charts for the 1940 Santa Anita Handicap show Seabiscuit running no worse than fourth at any point during the race. In fact, he was in perfect striking position around the first turn and down the backstretch.
Anachronisms: Union Station in Los Angeles is shown as the location where Charles Howard started the campaign to get a match race with War Admiral in 1938. However, the station did not open until 1939.
Miscellaneous: When Red’s horse is dragging him, before he fractures his leg, Red’s left foot is caught in the right stirrup. That could only happen if he was riding backwards.
Miscellaneous: In one scene, the trainer is consulting with the jockey in the jockeys’ room. During the races, only jockeys are allowed in the jockeys’ room
Anachronisms: Before Seabiscuit and Red’s first race, when Seabiscuit is being loaded into the starting gate, you can see the Santa Anita racetrack sign in the background, with a digital scoreboard. Digital scoreboards were first manufactured in the 1980’s.
Anachronisms: During an early scene showing Prohibition, the car pictured is a 1936 GM model. However, Prohibition ended in the U.S. in 1933.
Anachronisms: Throughout the movie, various characters are using modern (precision adjustable-power) binoculars with plastic casing.
Anachronisms: SPOILER: When the little boy is buried, the lowering device for the casket is modern (post-1980s).
