“8MM” Goofs List
- Continuity: When Mr. Longdale and Tom Welles go to the trunk of his car to fetch 8mm, Longdale is holding a gun with one hand when Tom is shown, but in close-up, he is holding the gun with both hands.
- Incorrectly regarded as goofs: In the warehouse, Longdale makes Poole kick his gun under the car, and this is the gun that he is reaching for. Some believe that Poole is trying to grab Longdale’s gun, but he is really looking for his own.
- Incorrectly regarded as goofs: Some projectors, particularly for home use, can introduce a perforated steel plate between the lamp and the film, allowing them to display a freeze-frame.
- Factual errors: Hollywood has no red-light district.
- Audio/visual unsynchronized: When Max California is explaining that the music industry is not exactly beating down his door. His is actually saying something else.
- Continuity: Eddie fires 17 shots from a 10-shot pistol without reloading.
- Continuity: The black car that Tom drives has a license plate in some scenes, but does not in others.
- Continuity: On the Missing Persons card, Mary Anne Matthews is spelled with a “E” in Anne. It is also spelled this way in the credits. However, on the thank you card to Tom Welles from Mary Anne’s mother at the end, the girl’s name is spelled without an “E” by the mother.
- Continuity: Tom Welles begins by examining the 8mm film on a PC with Windows but it changes to a Mac.
- Continuity: The amount of stubble (specifically on his chin, between the sides of his modified Fu Manchu) on Dino changes between shots during his first meeting with Welles.
- Continuity: During the fight between Welles and Machine, towards the end of the film, they fall through the window into the cemetery. The way Machine holds his knife changes between the shot where he slips off the roof, and the next shot where he heavily lands on the ground.
- Continuity: When Tom Welles and Eddie Poole are at the place where Mary was killed, outside it is night, but when they are inside, through the windows it looks like sun is shining.
- Continuity: When Dino says to Machine to hold down Tom Welles in the storage, Machine takes at the same time a knife in his (left) hand, but in the following scene, when Tom resists and shouts at Dino, we see once again Machine taking a knife from the table, in order to threaten Tom again.
- Continuity: When Tom Welles first meets Janet Mathews, he is looking at pictures of Mary Anne when he comes across a young picture of Janet. During the close up shots of the photographs, the picture behind the photo of Janet shows Mary Anne in a white shirt and green dress, while in the expanded shot of Janet and Tom, the photo shows Mary Anne in a blue shirt.
- Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): When Tom Welles is giving cash and a plane ticket to Max California in the bar, Max mistakenly calls Tom “Mike”.
- Continuity: After Tom has broken into Machines house and begins to go up the stairs from the basement, we catch a quick glimpse of Tom’s pistol. The pistol has no “silencer”. As he begins the climb up the stairs a “silencer” suddenly appears.
